    Donald Campbell: Speed King

There has always been something alluring about the Campbell family.

Malcolm Campbell was the holder of 13 world speed records in the 1920s and 1930s.

Son Donald Campbell had a lot to live up to in order to follow in his father's footsteps and this documentary shows that it was a struggle. Malcolm is regarded as an imposing figure.

Donald did emerge from his father's shadow by setting his own world speed records on land and water. However in 1967 he paid a heavy price with the fatal crash in Bluebird on Lake Coniston.

This documentary covers more that just Donald's record attempts. A bit more of his life by talking tom his friends and families as well as a few foes. There is some archive photos that are seen for the first time.

Donald was regarded as a bit of a playboy, someone who was a little out of his time describes one journalist. Donald Campbell had that colonial view of being born British was winning the lottery in life.

It might be the reason why he pushed himself to the edge. To win back the world records for Britain. In return he had to keep his financial backers happy and they did not always appreciate the dangers involved.

An interesting glimpse of a man who turns out to have been more genuine and nicer than people might have imagined.

      [talking about Donald Campbell]

David Wynne-Morgan: He would always talk about getting the records for *Britain*, never talking about just for himself. I've heard him say many times that to be born British was to win the first prize in life.
