Impasse

From Hungary, comes "Holtpont" ("Deadlock") a highly interesting animated short film following the final minutes of a prisoner about to get executed by a firing squad and the restricted point of view from the prison and its sounds (a water dripping nearby, the footsteps getting closer to him, then a man covering his head with a hood, and a fly that lands at his feet, etc.). Ferenc Rofusz's animation and style is very impressive and detailed (just like the use of sound) as there are bits when the drawings are so realistically done one might imagine as being a mix of filmed moments with actors that are transformed into animation. We don't have a context as for the prisoner's execution, and it's not even that important. What matters there is the action and the tension of the environment, and a man in constant fear who begs for his life. A small classic that needs some new life with audiences. 9/10.
