Since 1999, Tyler Perry has been synonymous with portraying the short-tempered but lovable Mabel "Madea" Simmons, giving audiences lots to laugh and think about over several plays and films. However, as his upcoming Netflix film, Madea's Destination Wedding, approaches, Perry admits he's "sick" of playing the title character after all these years.

Tyler Perry's Duplicity is his latest spotlight of Black talent whose faces millennials will recall from throwback YA series like Sister, Sister (RonReaco Lee) and even The Vampire Diaries (Kat Graham). It looks and feels like it was shot in Georgia, with a by-the-numbers tale centered on racism, justice, betrayal and conspiracy. All the makings of another rinse-repeat of Perry mojo that might end up continuing his streak of underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes scores, due to the story's derivative nature and unfortunate lack hardhitting performances.

Nonetheless, this is the brilliantly minded Perry we're talking about, folks, so be prepared for at least a few plot twists and turns along the way that might keep you seated throughout this new straight-to-Prime Video entry until the final credits roll.

It’s quite a week for stunning new entries into the top five most-viewed movies and shows on Netflix. The lists on Tudum have been updated and highlight some very recent releases. Those have added an edge and been popular with viewers, one doing so in spectacular numbers.

The top five shows include a new tough-to-stomach drama with remarkable direction and camerawork. The show has been a major talking point for viewers this week and has had a huge number of views. It’s joined by two other new releases and a couple of recent favorites.

On the movie list, one new release has been much-awaited but may be a letdown if the critics are right. But then the viewers themselves have the real say, and it has attracted plenty of them so far. Once again there is plenty of variety and something for all the family among the top five movies.

Netflix’s newest crime drama “Adolescence” has been a runaway hit, reaching 24.3 million views in its first four days of availability, making it the streamer’s top show for the week of March 10-16.

The series, hailing from the U.K. and following the family of a young boy accused of murder, was only surpassed in viewership by “The Electric State,” the Russo brothers’ sci-fi film starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, which led the Netflix Top 10 with 25.2 million views.

Back on the TV chart, “Running Point” came in second place with 6 million views in its third week of streaming. It was followed by “Zero Day” with 4.4 million views in its fourth week. “Beauty in Black” was fourth with 3.9 million views in the first full week of availability for the second part of Season 1 and its sixth week on the chart overall. “Adolescence” debuted as Netflix’s most-watched TV show of the week with an impressive audience for its opening weekend.

After debuting its four hour-long episodes on Thursday, March 13, “Adolescence” scored 24.3 million views through Sunday, March 16, making the limited series the most-watched TV show on Netflix during the week of March 10.

The opening weekend viewership for “Adolescence” outpaced that of other recent Netflix original series, including “The Night Agent” Season 2, which debuted to 13.9 million views, and “Zero Day,” which debuted to 19.1 million views during the week of Feb. 17. Likewise, “Running Point” scored 9.3 million views in its first week on the streamer.

Still, viewership for “Adolescence” was not enough to beat Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt-led “The Electric State,” which debuted to 25.2 million views, ranking as the most-watched movie of the week on Netflix.

Beauty in Black's Horace actor Ricco Ross teased fans after calls rang out hoping his Netflix character survives beyond the show's newly-debuted Part 2. 

The Tyler Perry-produced streaming series debuted back in October, telling the gritty story of an exotic dancer who gets tied up with a wealthy Chicago family that is hiding a terrifying and illegal secret.

Tyler Perry's Beauty in Black has been renewed for a second season. Netflix picked up the series for a new batch of episodes just a few days after Season 1 Part 2 hit the platform on March 6.

Written and directed by Tyler Perry, Beauty in Black debuted on Netflix in October 2024. The story focuses on Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams), a young exotic dancer trying to earn a living after a falling out with her mother.

Well, that was rather quick! Tyler Perry's Beauty in Black season 1 Part 2 just came out on March 6, 2025, and we already have renewal news. Not just for the Netflix series, but for another of the creator's projects on BET as well. But first, let's talk about the Bellarie family-centric series!

With Love, Meghan has had a lot of press coverage. But the lifestyle series fronted by Meghan Markle struggled in the ratings, only just sneaking into Netflix’s top ten weekly ratings chart.

The eight-part series reached 12.6M hours viewed in its first week on the streamer. This was number ten behind ratings leader Kate Hudson-led comedy Running Point, which had 61.8M hours viewed across the week.

This was significantly down on the ratings for Harry & Meghan, which premiered in December 2022 and became Netflix’s biggest documentary debut ever. That series, which was directed by Liz Garbus, debuted with 81.6M hours viewed in its first three days and adding another 97.7M in its first full week on the service as well as 39.7M in its second full week on Netflix.

Within a few days of the release of Beauty in Black season 1 part 1, back in October of 2024, the series became the most streamed show on Netflix, bearing clear indication of the immense popularity of the show’s producer, writer, and director Tyler Perry. For data nerds – it’s our favorite time of the year – the second half of 2024 viewing data has just been released! We’ve got a lot more to come, but what are the most-watched movies and series of the second half of the year? Let’s dive straight in.

What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

Award-winning filmmaker Tyler Perry continues his knack for making thrillers as one of his upcoming projects lands a release window on Prime Video. Perry's next movie, Duplicity, shares its first trailer to build anticipation before its spring premiere.

Prime Video confirmed the R-rated Duplicity will debut on Mar. 20. The film is directed, written and executive produced by Perry and stars The Vampire Diaries actor Kat Graham, who portrayed Bonnie Bennett in the acclaimed supernatural teen drama. Graham stars alongside Batwoman's Meagan Tandy, The Oval's Joshua Adeyeye and Baggage Claim's Tyler Lepley. Perry produced the film alongside Angi Bones (Blade) and Will Areu (A Madea Family Funeral).

It’s now Netflix’s turn to roll the dice on a series adaptation of the iconic tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons, our sister site Deadline reports.

Titled The Forgotten Realms, the live-action project — which is still in early stages of development — is being executive-produced by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), Dan Levine (Shadow and Bone), Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) and Hasbro Entertainment. Crevello will also write and serve as showrunner.

If you’re still looking for more Yellowstone despite the show’s future remaining in doubt amid revival rumors, Netflix may be ready to scoop up the hit Western’s audience with Ransom Canyon.

Ransom Canyon has been in the works for a while, but I wasn’t sold on it until I watched the trailer.

But first, let’s dive into the specifics.

All Ransom Canyon Season 1 episodes will premiere on the streaming platform on April 17.

The official logline begins: “Welcome to Ransom Canyon, where love, loss, and loyalty collide beneath the crimson mesas of Texas Hill Country.

The series charts “three ranching family dynasties locked in a contest for control of the land,” which puts “their lives and legacies” on the line from “outside forces intent on destroying their way of life.”

Netflix is the streamer that never stops giving. Sure, the price keeps going up, but at least we get some fantastic original content for our money. We will not love everything, but even if we like half, that's a win for us and the streaming service.

Plus, at least our money is going partly toward the making of original series. Where would we be without Virgin River, for instance? Or The Night Agent? Our lives would be a lot less full of entertainment.
