    Funny, Poignant Portrait of Life

Walt Whitman once wrote: "Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.)"

The contradictions and complications of real people are often eschewed in films, hoping to create something more accessible, but perhaps at the cost of that humanity. Jim Fields, with Flyover Country, has made a movie about real people who are able to inhabit the contradictions of characters who haven't figured themselves out yet. Rather than resort of the clichés of a coming of age story, Fields has created a cast of characters starring Mike Mecek and Myles Dabbs that believably move from one conflict to another, solving some, and learning to live with the others. Shot beautifully by Matt Patterson and set to a vibrant soundtrack by Dereck Higgins, Omaha comes to life in a funny, poignant portrait of life in this perfectly titled flyover country.

    Who paid the other reviewers?

I've seen some stinker movies and this one takes the rotten cake. The acting, and I'm being kind by calling it that, was some of the worst I've seen. The story, the situations the characters dealt with, were unbelievable. Why do people waste money creating such dreck? I didn't finish watching it, btw. I felt my IQ begin to drop so I put on the Muppets Movie to save my brain.

    Loved It!

Loved this movie and its soundtrack! The storyline caught me and pulled me in! Great movie. The beauty of Omaha was definitely captured in this movie :). The only part I didn't understand was how the title connected to the movie (however this is more explained if you watch the extra features.) I am proud to say I am originally from the area. I am also proud to say that I have never seen so much hate toward homosexuals (that does not mean that it does not exist--it exists everywhere sadly. I'm just blessed I haven't seen it.) I also really enjoyed watching one of the last lines in the credits (this is not word for word), "No homosexual or heterosexual people were harmed in the making of this film."

Flyover Country has its moments of clarity and insight. It seems to know what it wants to say, but somewhere along the way, at intervals, it looses grasp on its own voice. This is not necessarily a bad thing, depending on how you view the film, since the film is precisely about that: Finding a voice (or being at conflict with one).

Ideas, trends and snobbisms seem to define Flyover's characters more than their own thoughts. At least that's the impression I got at times. Perhaps this was done -once again- on purpose, as a way to outline the metaphor that is the title of the film. Or maybe this is just how the universe these characters inhabit really is. I don't know. At any rate, the situation the main character finds himself in during the film could be described as a modern Mid-Western abstract and subjective dichotomy of self.

For the ultra-low budget film that Flyover Country is, it comes across as very well crafted. It could have used some less stage-styled performances from some of the cast members, but overall, it is a pleasant movie to look at. However, as a whole, the story misses more marks than it should, both dramatic and comedic-wise.

Should you watch Flyover Country? Sure thing. The director has an interesting voice that, not unlike the characters in this movie, seems to be finding its way back to his own self.

    Micro-budget filmmaking at its finest.

Jim Field's takes us on a profoundly personal journey through the streets of Omaha, Nebraska, as we follow two friends who find themselves immersed in a society boiling between fundamentalism and civil rights. The shots are smart, story authentic, and locations real. Originally planning to see this in multiple sittings, the surprise that hits around the twenty minute mark left me hooked for the whole 100. While there are obvious limitations with set and lighting on a micro- budget film, Fields harnesses locations ripe with color, lighting, and incorporates a final local song the brings the artistry of the film together. If you're looking for something fresh or ever wondered what it might be like for some who grow up gay in the Midwest- see this film!
