From ashes to rebirth: A story beautifully told

So very proud of my former student, who managed to create a documentary full of saddening but uniquely touching images of part of our island of Crete, which was destroyed by fire, leaving its brave people with the tremendous task of rebuilding it from its "ashes". Watch those people speak their undeniable truth in a way only a compassionate creator, like John, would allow them to. There is the option of English subtitles, as well. Thank you John for opening a window to a world never seen before. In a matter of minutes, we viewers use all our senses to savour this experience. A must- watch! 👏👏👏👏

    Breathtaking

ASHES by John Mathioudakis is a powerful and evocative short documentary that digs into the aftermath of devastating wildfires in Rethymno, Crete. Through haunting visuals and intimate interview with local residents, the director paints a stark picture of both the destruction and the resilience of the community. ASHES captures the emotional toll of the fires, highlighting the loss of life, property, and the island's unique ecosystem. The documentary, while brief, leaves a lasting impression, urging viewers to reflect on climate change, environmental conservation, and the urgent need for action.

    Excellent film

"Ashes" is a deeply moving documentary that offers a heartfelt glimpse into the lives of the residents of Melabes, Rethimno, who were forever changed by the devastating fires of July 2022. Through the personal account of the winemaker, Iliana Malihin, a winemaker deeply connected to the land, the film captures the harrowing reality of losing not only homes but also a rich viticultural history. The cinematography beautifully contrasts the serene landscapes with the ferocity of the fires, while Malihin's poignant narration adds emotional depth. "Ashes" isn't just a recount of tragedy, but a testament to resilience, as the village grapples with preserving its legacy against overwhelming odds. This documentary leaves a lasting impression, reminding us of the fragile balance between tradition and the forces of nature. A must-watch for those who value cultural heritage and human perseverance.
