From dusk tillDawn meets Silly blues 1930s Crime flick

I'm a big fan of Ryan C and also most of the cast so I had high expectations this would be well directed and acted.

Unfortunately the back story is decent for the one part based on the twin brothers but then mid way it switches to another film that has some crazy vampires with no back story so it's very confusing.

I loved the first half as it had great blues and 1930/40 vibes but if you're looking for horror/ vampires you can skip the first hour as it really has little impact on what suddenly appears in the last 30 mins which is another film with cool effects and vampire mayhem -

But be prepared to scratch your head wondering what was the writer smoking and it just accelerates into something bizarre yet original in its scatological premise.

At least from Dusk till dawn makes a mockery of its premise while this film is being played straight laced so it felt more like it was an after thought to blend the two - and for me it just did not work and was confusing like writer was unable to connect the dots.

Go in with super low expectations and maybe you'll enjoy it as our group all came out with similar results of paying kudos to great directing, cgi and acting but it was a confusing bizarre experience.

5 stars for directing and acting.

    More music in movies, please!!!

For years I've been emphasizing the importance of music in movies; how an amazing musical score can significantly elevate a movie. It shouldn't just be background dressing. It should be brought to the forefront. It should drive the story. It should be a character in itself. It should give you goosebumps in the big moments. Sinners is one of the best examples of this.

Aside from the music, I could tell I was watching high-quality filmmaking within five minutes. The directing, camerawork, editing, and sound design are pristine. The entire cast does a great job, but Michael B. Jordan shines. He is a superstar.

Sinners is also surprisingly funny, without taking away from the seriousness. And the horror elements are... satisfying. This movie goes hard.

Advice: Certain scenes have an expanded aspect ratio that will only be shown in IMAX. If you can't go to an IMAX, any premium screen will do (Dolby Cinema, UltraScreen, EMX, etc). This movie benefits more than most from the larger screen and louder speakers.

Also, I missed A LOT of the dialogue, you may want to ask for a closed caption device.

    excellent film.

Let me just say it straight: the beginning of this film was absolutely brilliant. No joke. From the very first scene, I was fully in. The way it was shot, the mood, the pacing - it all hit hard. You could tell the filmmakers knew exactly what they were doing. Everything looked and sounded top-tier. It had that high-quality feel you only get when people really care about what they're making.

The intro pulled me in fast. I didn't even check my phone once, which says a lot. The atmosphere was intense, and every scene felt like it mattered. The camera work was clean, the lighting was on point, and the sound design added a ton of tension. It honestly felt like a masterclass in how to start a movie right.

The way they built everything up was impressive. There was a solid rhythm to how the story moved, and you could tell a lot of time and thought went into the setup. The characters were introduced smoothly, and the world they created felt real and believable. I was fully locked in.

But then it hit a wall.

About two-thirds into the movie, things started to slip. And by the time the ending rolled around, it was clear: they had either run out of time, budget, or energy - maybe all three. The final act felt completely rushed. It was like they just wanted to wrap things up as fast as possible. There was barely any payoff for all the buildup we got earlier. Big questions were left unanswered, and moments that should've hit hard just kind of... didn't.

The ending felt lazy. Not in a "we didn't care at all" way, but more like "we didn't plan this part out properly." You could see the difference in effort. The quality dropped, the pacing sped up too much, and characters that had been developed early on were suddenly just background noise. It honestly felt like a different movie by the time it ended - and not in a good way.

It's frustrating, because the film had the potential to be great. The opening made me think I was watching one of the best films of the year. But a great start doesn't matter if you don't finish strong. And this film didn't. It faded out instead of going out with impact.

That said, I'm not saying don't watch it. There's still a lot to like here - especially the first half. If you're into movies with strong direction, nice visuals, and a gripping start, you'll probably enjoy most of it. But if you're the type who needs a solid, satisfying ending to feel like it was worth your time, this one might leave you disappointed.

Bottom line: amazing start, weak finish. A film that grabs your attention early, but lets go too soon. It deserved better. I'd give it a 7 or maybe a 8 out of 10, mostly because of how strong the first half is. But yeah - if they had nailed the ending, we'd be talking 9 or even 9.5 easily.

Not as great as everyone says

First half of the movie was very good. Great character set up. Second half of the movie the plot progressed very quickly with nothing particularly interesting happening. Not much of a story line involved and movie ended abruptly. The acting was great, Michael B Jordan did a wonderful job playing smock and stack and some of the supporting characters were great as well. The movie was filmed perfectly. Music was obviously great as well. Plot and storyline did not move the needle for me. Post credit scene was cool!

    Ok to watch. Just ok...

Sinners impresses early with its stunning cinematography and solid performances. The film sets a moody, atmospheric tone and builds tension with a deliberate, slow-burn approach that hints at something truly impactful. Unfortunately, that promise is never fulfilled. When the vampires finally appear, the film takes a sharp downturn. Their behavior is nonsensical, lacking any real menace or intelligence, and they end up feeling more like a parody than a threat. It's a baffling creative choice that undermines everything the first half works so hard to build. Despite its strong technical elements, the film stumbles badly at the finish line. A stylish misfire-watchable, but disappointing. 6 out of 10.

    • Trivia
It's particularly significant that Remmick is introduced fleeing from Choctaw hunters. Not only is the movie set in the historic Choctaw homeland, there is a long history of cooperation between the Choctaw (and Native America more broadly) and the Irish. The Irish Potato Famine occurred sixteen years after the Choctaw, Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, and Chickasaw peoples were forced to walk the Trail of Tears. Knowing tragedy and hunger themselves, Choctaw and Cherokee survivors donated hundreds of dollars to support famine relief. In 2017, Ireland erected the Kindred Spirits sculpture in acknowledgment of friendship between the two peoples, with a companion sculpture called Eternal Heart installed on Choctaw land in 2024. When the Coronavirus Pandemic began in 2020 and the Navajo and Hopi nations were hit especially hard, Ireland sent a two million dollar donation, accrediting it to Choctaw kindness in their time of need.
    • Goofs
When Smoke and Stack are waiting for Hogwood early in the movie to buy the sawmill from him, they are casting notably different shadows while standing beside their car, revealing how the scene was spliced together from two different shots of Michael B. Jordan taken at slightly different times of the day.

Old Sammie: You know something? Maybe once a week, I wake up paralyzed reliving that night. But before the sun went down, I think that was the best day of my life. Was it like that for you?

Stack: No doubt about it. Last time I seen my brother. Last time I seen the sun. And just for a few hours, we was free.
