R.I.P. Charles Cyphers: Sheriff Brackett from John Carpenter’s Halloween has passed away at 85
Image
Over the course of a screen acting career that stretched across fifty years, Charles Cyphers racked up 100 credits, but he’s best known for his collaborations with John Carpenter, having appeared in the director’s Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, Someone’s Watching Me!, Elvis, The Fog, and Escape from New York. His most popular character was Sheriff Leigh Brackett from the 1978 Halloween, a role he reprised in 1981’s Halloween II and, after a forty year absence from the Halloween franchise, 2021’s Halloween Kills. Sadly, we’ve lost this great character actor, as Variety reports that Cyphers has passed away “from a brief illness” at the age of 85.

Cyphers’ manager Chris Roe confirmed his passing to Variety and provided the following statement: “Charles was a lovable and sensitive man. He always had the best stories, and you got a full performance while he told you. He was a close friend and...

Doctor Whos Most Memorable Couple Is More Toxic Than Fans Realize
Image
Clara and Danny's relationship in Doctor Who was rocky due to unresolved emotional baggage. Their first date sparked aggressive tension between them, revealing compatibility issues. Danny's death served as a turning point, highlighting unresolved issues within their relationship.

Despite being one of the most prestigious sci-fi shows in the world, Doctor Who isn't afraid to implement a romance plot every once in a while. From Amy and Rory to Mickey and Rose, all of these couples work to add a touch of humanity to this futuristic and sometimes dystopian franchise. Not only that, the show isn't afraid to sprinkle in a few Queer pairings, giving couples like the Fifteenth Doctor and Rogue the chance to shine. Overall, all of these couples help to give fans something to relate to and focus on while The Doctor continues to zoom across time and space.

One of the more notable couples, especially during the late 2010s,...

Image
Star Trek #13 reveals that Harry Kim, the butt of jokes in the Star Trek meme community, returns with a dangerous new mission and a cool codename that establishes him as a deadly operative. Harry Kim, once the Operations Officer on Voyager, was never promoted throughout the show's seven-year run, but now he has found a second life as a Starfleet Intelligence agent. Harry Kim's new codename, Kingsnake, perfectly fits his new career path, as the king snake is a lethal creature known for its resistance to the venom of other snakes and its ability to attack other snakes. This new nickname redeems years of mockery.

Book Market Picking Up As Universal Buys ‘Run For Your Life’ Short Story Package; Britney Spears Memoir & Journo Student’s Takedown Of Stanford President Also Spark Bids – The Dish
Image
Exclusive: The book-to-movie market that has been spotty with two strikes hobbling the business is seeing an uptick that will lead to a few strong deals before the holiday. It could presage a boom market if the optimism from the latest labor talks lead to a deal and resumption of business.

One big deal just closed at Universal, for an action thriller based on the unpublished 43-page short story Run For Your Life. The story is about a groom marked for death on his wedding day, and the studio is at the altar with a pre-emptive purchase that has Safe House scribe and Designated Survivor creator David Guggenheim attached to write and Sam Hargrave in talks to direct. Latter helmed the Chris Hemsworth action films Extraction and its sequel for Netflix and Agbo; Hargrave will next direct another high-action thriller, Stay Frosty, for Warner Bros with Dark Horse Entertainment.

Horror Highlights: Frankenstein’S Monster Statue, The Caretaker, Entity, Screamfest
Image
Sideshow Brings Frankenstein'S Monster To Life: "First brought to life by the words of Mary Shelley, the creation known as Frankenstein’s Monster has taken on many forms throughout popular culture. Inspired by the iconic literary character and his visual legacy across the centuries, the Frankenstein’s Monster Statue by Sideshow honors the creature’s horror roots and tragic nature with a new, original design.

This stunningly detailed, fully sculpted piece shows the hulking figure cloaked in the pelt of a black bear and clad in patchwork pants. Two large electrodes emerge from his back and silver staples hold his reanimated flesh together. He is painted with a cadaverous mixture of yellows and reds, emphasizing how Frankenstein’s creation straddles the line between life and death.

Lurching through a melancholy cemetery scene, Frankenstein’s Monster crosses a snow-dusted grave where a lantern, shovel, and broken skull rest. The headstone...

‘Samuel,’ ‘Caretaker’ Win at 26th Lau Haizetara Documentary Forum
San Sebastian – “Samuel and the Light” snagged the main prize for best project at San Sebastian’s 26th Lau Haizetara‘s Documentary Co-production Forum.

A co-production between Brazil’s Sendero Filmes and France’s Le-loKal follows an initially five-year-old kid over five years in Brazilian fishing village Ponta Negra depicting his growth and awareness of the complex reality of his native country, and its contradictions — modernity and tradition, luxury and waste, nature and technology.

The Treeline Award — a Consultancy Award regarding distribution and festivals — went to Martina Matzkin and Gabriela Uassouf’s “The Caretaker,” an emotional but analytical insight in two seemingly incompatible and historically marginalized worlds — transgender women and senior adults — the first taking care of the second. Argentina’s Groncho Estudio produces.

Projects sparking large interest took in “Robin Bank” from Spain and Argentina’s “Ocho cuentos sobre la hipoacusia.”

Directed by Anna Giralt and produced by Barcelona and Bogotá-based Gusano Films,...

"Once I had it all. Now I just have everything": Nicolas Roeg Remembered
It has become a cliché to quote the age-old maxim that you should never meet your heroes. I am also of the belief that you should never write about meeting them either. But I am going to make an exception for Nicolas Roeg, who passed away aged 90 on November 26, 2018. It’s commonly accepted, and certainly in the tributes that have flowed since his death, that Roeg was a genius of the cinema. In his lifetime he was not always held in such lofty regard, as his longtime friend and producing associate Jeremy Thomas was swift to point out when he chastised the U.K. film establishment for its neglect of one of its most visionary talents. “Roeg was one of the major figures but he wasn’t supported by the British Film Industry. There is something about our culture that we don’t revere our greatest filmmakers, especially if they...
