‘Under the Open Sky’ Review: Koji Yakusho Gives Virtuoso Turn in Ex-Convict’s Heartbreaking Rehab Drama
Image
“Prison is the only place that won’t kick you out no matter how badly you behave,” remarks the ex-con protagonist, who gets no second chances in Japanese society. Directed with piercing insight, emotional depth and true compassion by Miwa Nishikawa, “Under the Open Skies” tells the heartbreaking tale of a pariah whose soul is crushed by systemic discrimination and a world of hypocritical conformity. while likely collecting awards at home and abroad.

Ever since her sophomore feature “Sway” premiered at Cannes’ Director’s Fortnight in 2006, Nishikawa has been a name to watch for riveting, wickedly cynical works. She also excels in drawing morally ambiguous characters: liars and swindlers hiding secrets behind their social standing. Though her technique is no less rigorous, her sixth film treads a new path by rooting for a career criminal from the lower depths who suffers for his honest values. This puts the film in...

Short Film Review: Heritage (2017) by Yuval Aharoni
The concept of “the parents not knowing their children” has been presented on global cinema many times, usually in extreme fashion, through films that range from “We Need to Talk About Kevin” to “The World of Kanako”. Yuval Aharoni takes the concept and adapts it to an Lgbt theme, with an approach, though, that is anything but extreme.

Heritage is screening at the Slovak Queer Film Festival

Noam, a young gay man, discovers that his father, who just died, had a secret affair with a married man, unbeknownst to anyone. Not knowing what to do with this information, since he cannot share with the rest of his family, he becomes firstly depressed and then curious. His curiosity leads him to follow (stalk one could say) and then meet the man, with their meeting eventually leading to sex, but his actions do not offer any solution or solace and his situation becomes even worse.

Film Review: Chiwawa (2019) by Ken Ninomiya Screening at Fantasia 2019
Creating an amalgamate movie from other movies is occasionally a very hard job, but the result can be great, as Tarantino has proven time and time again, particularly with “Kill Bill”. Ken Ninomiya took the concept a step even further, by using Kyoko Okazaki’s manga as its base in order to shoot a film that loans elements from “Helter Skelter” and “River’s Edge (also based on Okazaki’s works), “The World of Kanako”, but most surprisingly, “Spring Breakers” and even a bit of “Velvet Goldmine”. Let us see how he fared.

“Chiwawa” is screening at Fantasia International Film Festival

The story unfolds in a number of different timelines. Immediately as the film begins, we hear one of the protagonists, Miki, talking about the titular character, Chiwawa, just before we learn that her body was found mutilated. In the next scene, the timeline switches to the past, when Miki...

Interview with Bernard Rose and Nana Komatsu: Bernard likes real, raw responses
For many film fans the name Bernard Rose is usually connected to perhaps his most famous film “Candyman”. However, the English director has also made a name for himself directing many period films, for example, about the life of musician Niccolo Paganini (“The Devil’s Violinist”), Ludvig van Beethoven (“Immortal Beloved”) as well as an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina”. Tokyo native Nana Komatsu was born in 1996 and began her career starring in a short film, called Tadaima, before immediately graduating to movies like Close Range Love and The World Of Kanako. Prior to these, however, she was a popular account holder on Instagram and a model. By 2015 she had already won the 38th Japan Academy Prize: Newcomers Of The Year award.
