Overly familiar and not funny enough, but works for what it is

A man goes to the fridge while watching a Kung Fu movie on his home projector. Despite the label warning it is Sarah's, he takes out a bottle of Final Contact; however Sarah is not the only one to want the drink, as the star of the film comes out and engages in contact for the item he is questing for.

Sometimes I bookmark shorts and by the time I watch them I forget what it was that brought me to them. In this case the credits reminded me that it was another short from Lai (his graduation film in fact) that made me check out some of this other stuff. This short is quite simple in terms of concept and, being honest, you'll have seen it before. The joke is that it spoofs old martial arts movies like Shaw Brothers; so we have a fight complete with sound effects, overly earnest dubbing which is slightly out of synch with the actors, and of course retrospective hip-hop music.

As such I must admit it was well done and amusing; not hilarious but it entertained me for a bit and I liked the familiarity of the jokes and content. Of course this is also a downside – that it is familiar, but at four minutes it really doesn't have time to get repetitive. Yes it could have been funnier and yes it is overly familiar, but it does have a certain charm in doing this, and it is well made and looks good (the film, not just Sarah James).
