In July 1997, the German cyclist Jan Ullrich, only 23 years old, won the Tour de France. Now, 25 years after the great victory in Paris, he looks back on the most important events of his life - from a childhood of competitive sports and a search for a father figure to the greatest cycling triumph and the darkest moments of his life.

Already from an early age, Jan Ullrich stood out from the crowd. His childhood friend and later teammate André Korff saw it. Together they went to a sports school in Berlin, where Ullrich showed great cycling talent. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Jan Ullrich turned professional and joined the German team Team Telekom. Jan Ullrich is quickly becoming cycling's great young hope. In 1997, as the only German ever, he wins the Tour de France and moves up into the elite. The media vie for his attention, but success comes at a price. Those who want to compete at the very highest level must learn to navigate a system marked by doping.

In 2006, Jan Ullrich's cycling career ends with a bang. The German is suspended from his team due to suspicion of doping and may not participate in this year's Tour de France. He flees to his villa in Mallorca, where he develops a massive alcohol and drug addiction and hits rock bottom when his family abandons him. To this day, he continues to struggle to process the past and rise again.
