Peter Chernin’s North Road Company has acquired Mexican production company Perro Azul.
Perro Azul produced Netflix’s most-watched show produced in Mexico and Latin America entitled Who Killed Sara? (¿Quién mató a Sara?). This is North Road’s first acquisition in Latin America and comes as the company seeks to strengthen North Road’s international presence.
Perro Azul’s founding partners, Alexis Fridman and Juan Uruchurtu, will remain in their leadership roles, as will the company’s executive producers Diego Rabasa and Julián de Tavira. Fridman and Uruchurtu will report to Jan Frouman, president of North Road International.
Founded in 2019, Perro Azul’s production portfolio also includes The Secret of the River (El Secreto Del Río), Netflix’s most popular Spanish-language show of October 2024. As well as the Netflix hits Queens on the Run (Fuga de Reinas), Nothing to See Here (Ojitos De Huevo) and Daughter From Another Mother...

The arrival of Manuel in a small town in Oaxaca sets the stage for a moving exploration of friendship against a backdrop of societal expectations in The Secret of the River. Manuel’s initial interactions with Erik, a stereotypical boy whose sportsmanship contrasts with Manuel’s more sensitive personality, highlight the complexities of male friendships formed by cultural norms. In a conservative community where traditional manhood is strictly enforced, especially by Erik’s father, Jacinto, their bond develops amid the vibrant yet oppressive atmosphere.
A tragic confrontation by the river serves as the spark that ignites their relationship, weaving their stories together through shared trauma. The accidental death of a guy who was trying to attack Manuel becomes a heavy secret that ties the boys together but also threatens to tear their lives apart. This scene perfectly captures the show’s deft handling of darker themes, reflecting the harsh realities marginalized people face.

Apart from walking through a heartwarming drama, Netflix's The Secret of the River features several memorable performances from its talented cast members. Set in Mexico, The Secret of the River is a relatively obscure 8-part series on Netflix that has garnered optimistic reviews from both viewers and critics. It has not only been praised for its grounded and emotional storytelling but also for its portrayal of a marginalized community.
In its 8-episode runtime, The Secret of the River presents a narrative that dabbles with themes surrounding self-acceptance, identity, and the resilience of the human spirit. While the character beats in the show are well-written, the noteworthy performances of almost all cast members in the series make the characters relatable and realistic. Given how the characters in the Netflix LGBTQ+ show play a crucial role in selling its moving drama to audiences, many viewers may be curious about who plays...

Netflix’s new mystery drama, the Spanish language series from Mexico, The Secret of the River, or El Secreto de Rio, is quite an interesting watch over eight episodes, each around 45 minutes long. Although the series struggles slightly with the pacing and could have been made a little more concise, its central plot is quite thought-provoking. The story here is about two childhood friends, Erik and Manuel, who are separated for many years after going through a traumatizing experience in their youth. Issues of gender identity and conflicting perspectives take over when they finally reunite, making their almost brotherly love in the past seem like an improbable bond. Can Erik and Manuel get over their inhibitions and accept each other with the same innocence as in their childhood days once again? The Secret of the River deals with this very question along with a number of other important ones raised through its subplots.

Fall is here, which means it’s time to bundle up on your couch and stream the weekend away. Let’s get into it: There’s plenty to enjoy in October on Netflix, from a new Ali Wong special to new seasons of shows like “Love Is Blind” and “Unsolved Mysteries.” The real unsolved mystery is how it feels like there is more “Love Is Blind” dropping every month, but I digress.
October also brings with it the chance to watch Season 1 of “Yellowjackets” (a Showtime hit) for the first time on the Netflix platform, as well as more “Outer Banks” and “The Lincoln Lawyer.” The best bet, however, is the return of Keri Russell.
Top Pick: “The Diplomat” Season 2
