Good Night and Good Luck, starring George Clooney, broke the record for highest weekly gross for a play last week, with an eye-popping $3.3 million.

That total was brought in across only seven preview performances, and bests the record set by Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhall. Othello initially broke the record for highest grossing play the week of March 3, with $2.8 million, and then broke its own record the following week with $2.82 million.

Good Night and Good Luck achieved the new record with an average ticket price of $302.07 and capacity of 101 percent at the Winter Garden Theater. The play, which sees Clooney play the journalist Edward R. Murrow as he takes aim at Senator Joseph McCarthy, broke the record during its second week of previews and is scheduled to open April 3.

Donald Trump has taken aim at the actor and prominent Democrat activist George Clooney, dismissing his interview on US TV news programme 60 Minutes as a “total puff piece”.

The Oscar-winning star was the subject of Sunday’s show to promote his Broadway debut, in a stage version of the film Good Night, and Good Luck, in which he plays veteran journalist Edward R Murrow, who took part in a historic TV showdown with Senator Joseph McCarthy.

George Clooney spoke with 60 Minutes tonight about the upcoming Broadway adaptation of his Oscar-nominated movie, Good Night, and Good Luck. In the play Clooney, now 63, plays newsman Edward R. Murrow, a role he said he was not ready to play when he directed the film in 2005.

“Murrow had a gravitas to him that at 42 years old I didn’t — I wasn’t able to pull off,” he told 60 Minutes’ Jon Wertheim.

The flip side of that, said Clooney, is that there are roles he once played for which he’s now no longer a fit.

The hit musical Mamma Mia! is returning to Broadway this summer after a 10-year intermission.

The musical – with casting to be announced later – will begin previews at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre on August 2, with an opening night set for August 14. The limited engagement will run through February 1, 2026.

The musical originally ran on Broadway from October 2001 to September 2015.

Since then, productions of the musical have appeared around the world, including North American and international tours, London and Toronto engagements, among others.

Mamma Mia! features music & lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus of Abba, book by Catherine Johnson, and direction by Phyllida Lloyd.

Maxtime Pictures’ “Her Story,” a comedy-drama film told from a largely female perspective, topped the mainland China box office for the second consecutive weekend. Disney’s “Moana 2” debuted in second place.

Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway showed “Her Story” improving its previous weekend’s showing by earning RMB140.9 million ($19.8 million) between Friday and Sunday. The film now has a cumulative total of $54.6 million in the Middle Kingdom.

“Her Story” is directed by Shao Yihui (2021’s “B For Busy”). Its fast-paced story focuses on two women – one a recently unemployed single mom, the other a new neighbor who is more troubled than she appears – who become friends. Together they face up to various relationship challenges, including an abusive ex-husband and new romantic possibilities.

Screen veteran Earl Holliman, who won a Golden Globe Award for starring in the 1956 movie The Rainmaker, has passed away. He was 96 years old.

Holliman reportedly died at his Studio City home on Monday while in hospice care. His partner, Craig Curtis, announced his death, per Variety. George Clooney’s Broadway debut in Good Night, and Good Luck will begin performances March 12, 2025, at the Winter Garden Theatre, with an opening date of April 3.

The Winter Garden venue will be available as of January, with the recently-announced closing of the Back the the Future musical.

Clooney announced his Broadway project last May. He’ll star at Edward R. Murrow in the stage adaptation of his 2005 Oscar-nominated film.

The stage play is co-written by Clooney and Grant Heslov, based on their screenplay for the film. David Cromer (The Band’s Visit) will direct. Producing will be Seaview, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Jean Doumanian and Robert Fox.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is keeping it all in the family as it has just named Jennifer Fox as producer of the 15th Governors Awards ceremony that will take place November 17, 2024 in the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood.

Fox was elected to the AMPAS Board of Governors for the the first time in June but is no stranger to the Governors Awards. She is embarking on her sixth consecutive time producing the event. The Governors Awards, unlike the Oscars, are not televised but instead briefly highlighted in a clips package on the ABC broadcast of the Academy Awards.

The 2025 Oscars are set for March 2, 2025.

At the 15th Governors Awards, Honorary Oscars will be presented to Quincy Jones and Juliet Taylor, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will go to Richard Curtis, and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award will be bestowed upon producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.
