Everything We Know About Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’
Image
As casting announcements continue to roll in, speculation and excitement has only grown surrounding Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to his critical and box office hit “Oppenheimer,” which won him the Academy Award for best director.

“The Odyssey” is a classic piece of literature by Homer that is divided between 24 different books, preceded by “The Iliad.” It tells the 10-year journey story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he travels home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he encounters multiple perils and discovers the death of his crewmates. Telemachus (Odysseus’ son), Penelope (Odysseus’ wife), Athena, Circe, Poseidon and Zeus are all major characters.

Historians and scholars date “The Odyssey” to sometime between 750-650 BC. The first printed Greek version became available in 1488. In the centuries since, it has remained one of the most studied, adapted and parodied stories ever with adaptations including the 1911 silent film by Giuseppe de Liguoro, 1954’s...

Move Over Harry Potter, Jon Favreau Is Putting Together His Own Golden Trio With a 'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew' Star
Image
Jon Favreauhas a long list of credits as an actor-director that fans love. His Iron Man film with Robert Downey Jr. kick-started the MCU as we know it, and he then turned his attention towards crafting a Star Wars universe on TV, giving us series like The Mandalorian led by Pedro Pascal, which has spawned a movie awaiting release next year. Now, Favreau has turned his attention towards another Disney IP, which will make fans very nostalgic – Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, and the series has found its golden trio.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Favreau is developing a hybrid live-action/animated series based on Oswald, and now Deadline reports that the series has found its top-line talent in young actors Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris, and Ryder Allen. All the kids will play middle schoolers: Cabot-Conyers stars as Jake, a hardworking student with a big heart. Harris will play Jen,...

Jon Favreau’s ‘Oswald The Lucky Rabbit’ Casts Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris & Ryder Allen In Series Lead Roles
Image
Exclusive: Jon Favreau’s new Disney+ series, Oswald The Lucky Rabbit, has set three of its leads: Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris and Ryder Allen.

From writer, producer and director Favreau for Walt Disney Studios, the animation/live-action hybrid is about Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a saucy, self-absorbed bunny.

Cabot-Conyers will play Jake, a hardworking middle school student with a big heart.

Harris will play Jen, an artistic middle schooler who is always ahead of the game.

Allen will play Taylor, a middle school student who is cautious but avoids turning down his friends.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit as a character is very important to the Walt Disney Co. The cartoon, which bears a close resemblance to Mickey Mouse, has a fractured history with the company and played a pivotal role in the creation of Disney’s most famous animated character. Oswald...

The Spotlight on Pixar Intensifies as ‘Elio’ Becomes Latest Original Animated Pic to Crash Land
Image
It’s hard to believe nearly a decade has passed since Pixar’s Coco, an original, music-infused fantastical yarn about a Mexican boy who travels to Land of the Dead, grossed nearly $800 million at the global box office to rank No. 11 on the year’s list of top-grossing films. That was in 2017, a time when no one could have anticipated it would be quickly followed by a dramatic downturn in the appetite for original animated fare.

For Pixar, that downturn hit a new tipping point with the debut of Elio over the June 20-22 weekend. The original summer tentpole, about an orphaned boy whose wish to be abducted by aliens comes true, debuted to a dismal $20.8 million domestically and $14 million overseas in what’s by far a record-low opening for the storied animation studio co-founded by the late Steve Jobs and later acquired by Disney.

Publicly, Disney execs are putting...

Jaws | What films did you watch at too early an age?
Image
Over 23 million people watched Jaws on British TV in 1981. A few thoughts on watching films at an impressionable age – and a call for your experiences.

Steven Spielberg’s shark-infested thrill ride Jaws recently celebrated its 50th anniversary – it was released on the 20th June 1975, to be precise. But as author and podcaster John Bleasdale recently reminded me, a generation of younger people didn’t see it in cinemas – they watched it on TV.

Jaws premiered on UK television on the 8th October 1981 – and according to stats shared by The Daily Jaws, 23.25 million people turned on ITV to watch it. This made it one of the most-watched films ever put on British television – second, in fact, only to the premiere of James Bond outing Live And Let Die, also on ITV. Essentially half of the British population stayed in to watch Jaws that evening, leaving streets, pubs and restaurants largely deserted.

Screen Talk Previews ’28 Years Later’ at the Box Office — and Fall Festival Hopefuls
Image
The June 20 box office weekend looks like another blockbuster double-header with the releases of Disney/Pixar’s animated family film “Elio” and Sony’s R-rated post-apocalyptic sequel “28 Years Later.” Danny Boyle’s follow-up to his groundbreaking 2002 zombie classic “28 Days Later” has some of the best 2025 reviews for a franchise movie. (IndieWire’s review is here.)

Even if, as “Screen Talk” co-hosts Ryan Lattanzio and Anne Thompson discuss on this week’s IndieWire podcast episode, Ryan found it ultimately cloying and sentimental despite the imaginative filmmaking. Boyle (working from original “28 Days Later” scribe Alex Garland’s script) shot the film entirely on the iPhone 15 Pro Max using rig technology, with the film introducing a “poor man’s bullet time” (as Boyle described to IndieWire) for some of the grisliest kills of those infected by the “Rage” virus.

“28 Years Later” introduces new characters played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer,...

Walt Disney Animation Chief Jared Bush Says Diversity Is ‘Crucial’ to the Studio’s Success
Image
Annecy, France – Somehow, this year was Jared Bush’s first time at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

Last fall, Bush was named the chief creative officer for Walt Disney Animation Studios — arguably the most important job in animation. He was no stranger to Disney; for the past 10 years he’s served as part of the studio’s creative leadership, advising on new projects and helping out when things go astray. He wrote and co-directed “Zootopia,” wrote “Moana,” co-wrote and directed “Encanto,” and co-wrote “Moana 2.” Next up, he co-wrote and directed “Zootopia 2” (out this Thanksgiving) and co-wrote the live-action “Moana” (for next summer).

The man with the most important job in animation was, before that, one of the busiest people in animation. Still, his appearance at Annecy in France this month was a critical showing as he steps more fully into the leadership role at an inflection point for Walt Disney Animation,...

Did Disney take "family" out of its family films?
Image
You could fill a mountain of books with the various criticisms lobbed at The Walt Disney Company today. Ticket prices are too high, it's a greedy corporation, or that "they just don't make things like they used to." The list goes on and on and on, but there might be a connecting factor.

The Disney name was founded on Walt's desire to spend more time with his children. From the animated features to the theme parks, family has been a consistent motif. The problem with today's modern Disney image is that vision has been drastically altered.

Misplaced family values?

It's safe to say that families are still Disney's bread and butter, that much hasn't changed. What has changed in the past few years is their role in some of the studio's larger projects. Somewhere between Encanto and Moana 2, the role of the family has all but vanished in Disney's major motion pictures.

‘Easy Would Be Boring’: ‘Zootopia 2’ Director Jared Bush on His High-Profile Sequel and Disney’s Cultural Legacy
Image
Walt Disney Animation Studios brought some serious star power to the Annecy Animation Festival this week, as chief creative officer, director and screenwriter Jared Bush offered the studio’s most comprehensive look yet at its hotly anticipated “Zootopia 2,” coming to theaters on Nov. 26.

Following his presentation, Bush sat down with Variety to discuss the upcoming sequel, his goals for Wdas and the importance of finding and supporting the creators of the future.

Jared Bush Credit: Disney

Variety: Disney has a strong track record of creating films that represent all sorts of people and cultures, but that don’t feel like they’re just checking boxes. Two films you worked on, “Moana” and “Encanto,” are prime examples. How do you ensure the studio’s stories embrace these other groups but stay approachable to everyone, from children to adult viewers, all around the world?

Jared Bush: I think maybe more than anything,...

Netflix's Oscar-Contending In Your Dreams Has A Jaw-Dropping Origin Story
Image
Since the addition of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2001, it has long been assumed that the winner would come from one of the industry's powerhouses: Disney, Pixar, or DreamWorks Animation. For much of the category's history, that assumption held true. However, for the last three years, the Oscar has gone elsewhere. Netflix snagged the statue in 2022 for "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio," Studio Ghibli won the top prize in 2023 for "The Boy and the Heron," and last year's awards ceremony made animation history when the independently released "Flow" beat out the highest-grossing film of the year. These wins mark a quiet but meaningful shift in the Academy's recognition of animation: Despite the inherent problems displayed by the Academy's perspective on animated cinema, artistry, innovation, and emotional depth are no longer confined to the major studios.

Netflix, in particular, has emerged as a serious contender in this evolving landscape.

'Snow White' Sets June Streaming Release Date on Disney+
Image
After a less-than-stellar box office run, Snow White is finally coming to Disney+. A live-action remake of Walt Disney's first animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, opened in March 2025 and quickly became one of the biggest bombs of the year, barely grossing $204 million worldwide against a reported budget between $240 and $270 million. The film was the center of much discourse online for nearly three years before the movie opened, but it now might find new life on streaming.

Disney has now officially set Snow White to debut on Disney+ on Jun. 11, 2025. This will come 82 days since Snow White opened in theaters, nearly a three-month theatrical window. Snow White was previously released on paid video-on-demand on May 13, 2025. Snow White now sits comfortably as one of Disney+'s big releases for June, hitting the streaming service thirteen days before Marvel Studios' Ironheart premieres its first three episodes.

‘Moana 2’ Director David Derrick Jr. Heads to Warner Bros. for Original Animated Feature | Exclusive
Image
David Derrick Jr., who directed “Moana 2” for Walt Disney Animation Studios and turned a proposed streaming series for Disney+ into a $1 billion-grossing juggernaut, has headed out to open waters. The filmmaker is decamping Disney for Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, directing an original feature for the studio set in the natural world.

Before making his directorial debut with “Moana 2,” Derrick was a hugely important member of the original film, storyboarding “How Far I’ll Go” and “I Am Moana.” He also worked as a story artist on Disney Animation’s “Raya and the Last Dragon,” “Encanto” and “Strange World,” as well as Jon Favreau’s photorealistic “The Lion King” remake for Walt Disney Pictures.

Derrick, who attended the University of Utah and CalArts, started his career at DreamWorks Animation, and worked in the story department on “Bee Movie,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Megamind” and “Rise of the Guardians.

Lilo & Stitch, Final Destination Bloodlines, And Moana 2 All Have Something In Common
Image
Earlier in the year, I was nervous. I was nervous about the continued state of the theatrical experience. The first chunk of 2024 got off to an exceptionally rough start at the box office, and I was sounding some alarms. I wanted nothing more than to be made to look like a fool as the year rolled on, like an alarmist with nothing to truly be worried about. Fortunately, that has largely come to pass, as movies like "A Minecraft Movie," "Sinners," and even the re-release of "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" have given the industry reason to be optimistic.

More than anything though, recent weeks have offered up a couple of bigger-than-expected debuts from the likes of Warner Bros.' "Final Destination Bloodlines" and Disney's live-action "Lilo & Stitch" remake. Both movies from beloved franchises, both of which blew past pre-release estimates. "Bloodlines" opened to $51 million, becoming the biggest horror release of the year.

Lilo & Stitch China Box Office: Opens With Strong Numbers & Is Projected To Have One Of The Biggest Debut For A Disney Live-Action Remake Post-covid
Image
Lilo & Stitch China Box Office: Opening Day Update (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Lilo & Stitch, the Disney live-action remake, is expected to have a glorious opening not only in the US but also in China. The movie is expected to set a new benchmark for Disney live-action remakes, and so far, the word-of-mouth is strong and positive. Scroll below for more.

The sci-fi comedy is based on the 2002 animated feature of the same name, which was critically and financially successful. For the unversed, the film was based on an original story by Chris Sanders, who directed the film along with Dean DeBlois in their directorial debuts. Sanders even gave the voice of Stitch and is back in the 2025 live-action.

Lilo & Stitch Box Office Day 1 in China

The live-action Disney opened in the Chinese theatres on Friday and collected a solid $2 million. It opened in China at #1 and collected that sum over 91K screenings in the country.

How Independent Animation Underdogs Like ‘Flow’ And ‘Memoir Of A Snail’ Are Disrupting The Awards Race: There’s “Never Been A Better Time”
Image
In the animated film space, two things naturally come to mind: stories for children and big-budget, formulaic projects. The former idea is something directors have been fighting for years, a recent example being the successful and not-so-child-friendly Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, but the formulaic factor has recently been challenged too — by an uprising in independent animation — and it’s changing the awards landscape.

One of the first films to break through in this way was Flee, a 2021 animated documentary film from Denmark about a gay man looking back on his life as a child refugee from Afghanistan. The film received widespread acclaim for its LGBTQ representation, archival footage and subject matter, leading to many festival awards and three Oscar nominations.

Everything to know about Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2’ as teaser trailer drops
Image
Disney has released the first teaser trailer for Zootopia 2, the sequel to its Oscar-winning animated movie from 2016. And while the teaser (below) doesn't give too much of the plot away, we do see a mix of new and familiar characters.

Who's who in the voice cast

Jason Bateman returns as the voice of Nick Wilde, a former con-artist fox who joined the Zootopia Police Department. Also back for the sequel are Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps and Shakira as Gazelle. New additions to the cast include Emmy winner Quinta Brunson as Dr. Fuzzby, Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan as sneaky-snake Gary, and comedian Fortune Feimster as a beaver named Nibbles.

What's the plot?

Judy and Nick find themselves on the twisting trail of a great mystery when Gary De’Snake arrives in Zootopia and turns the animal metropolis upside down. To crack the case, they must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town,...

The Zootopia 2 Trailer Is Barely A Trailer (Because Disney Knows It's Gonna Make A Billion Dollars Anyway)
Image
Good news for predators, prey, and those who are still undecided: The first trailer for "Zootopia 2" has arrived, featuring the return of crime-solving animal duo Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) and Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin). This time around, their pursuit of a wanted reptile called Gary De'Snake (Ke Huy Quan) flings them into a fresh mystery, and the case takes them undercover in the semi-aquatic neighborhood of Marsh Market.

The first "Zootopia" movie was released back in 2016 and grossed more than a billion dollars at the box office. Rather than jumping directly into a sequel, writer-directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard moved on to make another original movie for Disney Animation Studios, "Encanto," which got a whole lot of people singing about why we don't talk about Bruno. In the interim, an anthology miniseries called "Zootopia+" -- featuring six stories centered around side characters -- was released on Disney+.

‘Zootopia 2’ Trailer: The Disney Sequel Introduces Reptiles with Ke Huy Quan’s Mysterious Snake
Image
Disney dropped the trailer for “Zootopia 2,” the long-awaited sequel to the billion-dollar Best Animated Feature Oscar winner from 2016. This not only marks the return of rookie cops Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), but also introduces reptiles for the first time to their mammal metropolis.

The buddy comedy finds Hopps, the police department’s first rabbit cop, working full-time with Wilde, the sly fox and former grifter. They investigate a crime in Marsh Market, where the first reptile is spotted. Who is prime suspect Gary De’Snake (Oscar winner Quan Kế Huy), the venomous pit viper? And what is he doing in Marsh Market?

Jared Bush, Disney Animation’s chief creative officer, wrote and directed with Byron Howard, who directed “Zootopia with Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph”). Bush previously directed the Oscar-winning “Encanto” and co-wrote and co-directed “Zootopia.”

The ‘Zootopia 2’ Trailer Has Dropped!
Image
Disney is coming back with yet another sequel film, this time ‘Zootopia 2.’ The film will release in theaters on November 26, as Disney’s Thanksgiving time release.

Like “Inside Out 2” and “Moana 2,”“Zootopia 2” is Disney banking on brand recognition instead of new IP. However, this move has paid off for them with the other two films, and I do think it’s possible “Zootopia 2” can do even better than the other sequels.

Plus, Disney already made ‘Zootopia’ part of Shanghai Disney, and the new “Zootopia Better Together” show will be coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World this winter.

They were always going to do more films because they doubled down on the IP with the theme parks. The show will be a replacement for “It’s Tough To Be A Bug.”

Today, the first trailer was dropped, take a look!

In the trailer,...

‘The Penguin’ Emmy submissions: Colin Farrell aims to complete his awards sweep after Golden Globe, Critics Choice, SAG victories
Image
HBO will submit four cast members from The Penguin for Emmy consideration, Gold Derby has confirmed.

Colin Farrell as Oswald "Oz" Cobb, aka the Penguin, is entering the Best Movie/Limited Series Actor category, as expected. Earlier this awards season, the Irish actor prevailed at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild Awards for playing the villainous DC Comics character. A victory at the Emmys would complete his sweep of top awards. A former Oscar nominee for The Banshees of Inisherin (2022), this would be his first career Emmy bid.

Cristin Milioti as Sofia Gigante (née Falcone) is being submitted for Best Movie/Limited Series Actress. She won the Critics Choice Award for this role, but lost at the Golden Globes to Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country) and at the SAG Awards to Jessica Gunning (Baby Reindeer). "Am I The Only One Who Needs More?": Disney Dreamlight Valley Fans Beg Gameloft To Add More Side Characters

There are over 35 classic Disney characters in Disney Dreamlight Valley, but some fans wish that the game would pay more attention to supporting characters, not just main characters. In particular, they call on the developers to bring Mirabel more company from the Encanto movie, like Isabella and the notorious Bruno.

4 Reasons Why I Am Excited to Watch ‘Lilo & Stitch’

For me, Lilo & Stitch (2002) isn’t just a movie, it’s a core memory. From chaos and wholesomeness, to bawling over “ohana means family”—it just feels like pure magic. So, when I heard Disney’s cooking up a live-action remake in 2025, to bring back the menacing alien and the quirky queen, I was basically mind-blown.

I mean, imagine all that wild energy with real beaches, upgraded visuals, and maybe even better Elvis Presley vibes. I seriously have high hopes for this film, which I believe is poised to be iconic for four reasons. One of them is obviously Stitch’s return in live-action to cause more mayhem. Duh! So, buckle up—it’s about to get Experiment 626-level wild.

1. The story is evergreen with potential

If I’m being honest, people often talk about family-oriented Disney films, and yet somehow skip Lilo & Stitch. Like I’ve heard people discussing Moana,...

Walt Disney Animation Studios World Premieres Whimsy & Wonder Exhibition at 20th Animayo Gran Canaria Festival (Exclusive)
Image
Walt Disney Animation Studios is paying tribute to female talent in art and animation at a one-of-a-kind exhibition during the Gran Canaria-based Animayo. From May 7-10, the exhibition Whimsy & Wonder will be exclusively on display during the fest.

Disney, an official sponsor this year, will celebrate the female artists who helped shape Disney’s visual storytelling for more than a hundred years. These include the trailblazing Mary Blair, who transformed the use of color in the 1950s, and the visionary women behind modern favorites like “Frozen,” “Encanto” and “Moana 2.” The exhibition is a homage to the women who have shaped the past—and are defining the future—of animation.

Art for ‘Encanto’ by Lorelay Bové

In the 1940s and ’50s, Blair, a celebrated color stylist and art director, brought a bold new vision to Disney animation. Her imaginative use of vibrant colors and whimsical shapes sparked a transformative shift...

Disney gets back to its roots with new theme (and it shouldn't end there)
Image
Disney's iconic stories are part of the reason it has endured forever, or at least as long as it has. However, many fans would agree that some of the latest offerings from The Walt Disney Company aren't exactly the gold standard.

One only has to look to the recent Snow White adaptation to see just how far Disney has fallen from its heyday. However, one of the newest additions to the Disney Cruise Line might hold the key to the studio's restoration.

A tale as old as time

Many of Disney's recent releases at the box office, have one major flaw in common: they are all very modernized takes. Whether that's Snow White, Wish, or even some of the most recent Star Wars entries, they all play to a certain set of modern values that differ from traditional Disney themes.

Although it would be unfair to say that every modern Disney flick is a dud,...

Solo Leveling’s second season has been nothing short of a phenomenon, smashing records left, right and center while setting new benchmarks in the anime world. With its finale now behind us, the series has clinched yet another monumental achievement, one that cements its dominance even further.

Crunchyroll Milestone: 700K Ratings and Counting

Crunchyroll has confirmed that Solo Leveling is the first anime to cross the 700K ratings mark on the platform, with a staggering 710.3K ratings. Not only did it leave behind some of the biggest names in anime, but the gap between it and the runner-up, One Piece, is enormous, 95k ratings, to be exact.

Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan are trailing behind but with such a significant lead, Solo Leveling’s reign over this record is unlikely to be challenged anytime soon.

Image
Tom Hardy Rap Mixtape(Photo Credit –Wikimedia)

Prominent actor known for his roles in Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises, and Venom, Tom Hardy earlier had a stunning ambition for rap. Long before dominating the movie industry, under the alias “Tommy No 1,” he teamed with producer Edward Tracy, a.k.a. “Eddie Too Tall” and he recorded a mixtape titled Falling on Your Arse in 1999. This long-buried 18-track project resurfaced years later in 2018 and surprised fans unaware of Hardy’s musical past.

These mixtapes showcase Hardy’s outstanding lyrical abilities, smooth flow, and vibrant energy. Tracks like We Makes the Beats and Rotten Cabbage highlight his lively yet skillful rapping. Many songs delve into gritty storytelling that defines his acting. Though he never followed rapping professionally, the mixtapes serve as proof of Hardy’s versatility in entertainment fields.

Image
Pixar and Disney released a new trailer for their next original film “Elio.” The trailer has done well in views, sitting at 4.9 million in under 24 hours and the comments are mostly positive too. However, one thing I noticed repeated in the comments and on other social media platforms is that people want to support the film, even if it’s not good, to save original films.

Here is the new “Elio” trailer,

This is the film synopsis,

“For centuries, people have called out to the universe looking for answers—in Disney and Pixar’s all-new feature film “Elio,” the universe calls back! The cosmic misadventure introduces Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. So, when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide, Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking. 'Encanto' Sequel Gets Promising Update From John Leguizamo: "All We Do Is Talk About Bruno"
Image
One of Disney’s best modern movies may finally be getting a sequel. Released back in 2021, Encanto introduced a whole host of wonderful characters in this musical tale about a multigenerational Colombian family, the Madrigals, and their mysterious magical gifts. Now, star John Leguizamo has declared that he is eager to talk more about his character, Bruno, revealing that the House of Mouse is “trying to come up with the storyline” for Encanto 2.

Speaking with People, Leguizamo offered a promising update on the development of Encanto 2, revealing that the animated sequel is now being discussed. Not only that, the actor states that, if he gets his way, the follow-up will be heavily centered on Bruno, the Madrigal’s ostracized uncle who has the ability to see and create visions of the future. Encanto is still waiting for its sequel, as despite its success, a new installment has yet to be officially announced by Disney. However, John Leguizamo has hinted that Encanto 2 may be closer to happening than fans might realize.

Leguizamo discussed the possible sequel in a new interview with People at the opening night for the Buena Vista Social Club. He shared how he's just as eager as the fans to see Encanto get a sequel, though he has the advantage of knowing the decision makers. Leguizamo teased that he's been personally badging the Encanto team about getting progress moving on a follow-up film, sharing a promising update on the movie finally happening.

"I'm also waiting for an Encanto 2 when all we do is talk about Bruno," Leguizamo quipped, referring to "We Don't Talk About Bruno," the popular song featured in the film. "I'm calling them everyday saying 'When is number two coming?...

The 64 Best Animated Movies of the 21st Century, from ‘Flow’ to ‘The Boy and the Heron’
Image
“One more time: animation is a medium, not a genre. Animation is film,” Guillermo del Toro said last year. IndieWire couldn’t agree more, and yet animation — an art form that requires the most precise control of the cinematic medium — is continually disrespected.

Infamously, 2022’s Best Animated Oscars presentation featured several jokes about the nominees that, in the words of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, framed “the five Academy Award nominees for Best Animated Feature as a corporate product for kids that parents must begrudgingly endure.” The directing duo called upon the Academy to do better by animation. And this year’s ceremony largely delivered, with less jokes that belittled animation as kiddy stuff and a sterling speech from del Toro himself for his acclaimed stop-motion feature adaptation of “Pinocchio.”

Pixar and Studio Ghibli tend to spring to mind first when discussing great animation, but there’s a world beyond those two giants.
