The seventh episode of the third season of "Gangs of London" features perhaps the only two "good" characters on the show forming an alliance.
There is also a revelation about this season's main bad guy, which actually made me rethink his bad guy status. He gets the opportunity to do what he supposedly had been trying to do all season, but chooses not to, for reasons I hope will be explained later. I don't think they were explained this time.
With a heroine again, the show couldn't resist throwing in some unlikely feats of strength from her. It's nothing as ridiculous as her giving birth and then strangling a guy with the umbilical cord, but it does feature her crushing a guy's skull in a car door with blood flying everywhere.
How much strength would it take to do that?
I was going to give this episode another 7/10 because whereas it got my attention with some good moments throughout, it didn't hold me in the palm of its hand like some previous episodes did.
I have upgraded it to an 8/10 because of the brilliant way the episode finishes. The idea of having the phone that received a call ordering the death of Sean Wallace in a room with all the people who could have done so, and then calling the number that gave that order and seeing whose phone goes off, is a fantastic, creative set-piece to end on.
What remains to be seen, though, is whether the guy who we now know is the big bad of this season can pull that off. He's always been totally believable before, but now his character has another aspect to him. For the very last episode, I want to see whether the actor can reveal as yet hidden depths to his performance.
