Netflix brings Kraven the Hunter to your home this Thursday. Allow him to enter at your own risk, as this appears to be the film that killed not only Spider-Man but also the non-Spider-Man Spider-Verse.

Sony's Spider-Man films were, on the whole, a pretty solid group. They got much better once they finally accepted assistance from Marvel Studios, beginning with Spider-Man: Homecoming. But those Spider-verse movies without Spidey? I mean, the first Venom was okay, but after that? Yeesh. And they got yeeshier as they went along.

Let me put it this way. The reputation of these movies is so bad that Netflix has been essentially dumping them onto their schedule. Venom: The Last Dance debuted on February 25th with little advance notice at all. The streaming giant did the same with Madame Web nearly a year ago, on May 14th. Both films performed much better on streaming than they did at movie theaters.

The critically panned Spider-Man spin-off (which ultimately brought Sony’s ill-thought-out shared universe to an end), Kraven the Hunter is ready to enact brutal vengeance on Netflix next month. The comic book action outing, which stars Kick-Ass and Bullet Train star Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the Marvel antihero, caused yet another divide between critics and audiences at the time, with the latter crowd no doubt excited to be able to stream Kraven at home.

Kraven the Hunter will be available to stream on Netflix in the United States on March 13, 2025, according to What’s on Netflix. Directed by J. C. Chandor from a screenplay by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk, Kraven the Hunter tells the origin of the Marvel character, much like Venom before it. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko for "The Amazing Spider-Man" #15 back in 1964, Kraven the Hunter follows the title character on a violent vendetta.

As the last stronghold of live-action Marvel characters outside the grasp of Disney and the MCU, Sony has been relentlessly attempting a cinematic universe of their own. Their latest venture, Kraven the Hunter, closed out 2024 with Sony's first R-rated Marvel movie. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular apex predator, the film continued the streak of shifting Spider-Man's foes into anti-heroes, if not outright heroes. J. C. Chandor directed, which felt promising after his work helming A Most Violent Year and Margin Call, but, ultimately, none of these characters have been proven to thrive in Spidey's absence.

As we told you earlier today, Kraven the Hunter arrive on Digital platforms starting tomorrow, January 14. Now, it's been confirmed that the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD drops on March 4, the same day Daredevil: Born Again premieres on Disney+.

Which of the R-Rated Marvel Comics adaptations will you choose to watch first? While one of Elektra's sai is on some newly revealed artwork, the Man Without Fear is likely to be a bigger draw than Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Spider-Man villain.

With this news of a Blu-ray release comes a full list of special features; we don't have specifics on those deleted scenes, though we can't imagine that scrapped Venom: The Last Dance crossover will be among them.

The biggest shock might be the fact Sony Pictures found not one but two positive quotes to stick on the Blu-ray's front and back covers...

Kraven the Hunter was released in theaters last month to overwhelmingly negative reviews - it sits at 17% on Rotten Tomatoes - and, so far, the movie has made only $58.9 million at the worldwide box office.

Sony Pictures is one of the only studios that doesn't rush its theatrical movies to Digital and streaming. However, with Kraven the Hunter now next to impossible to track down in theaters, a Digital release appears imminent.

According to When to Stream, the movie is scheduled to hit Digital and PVOD on Tuesday, January 14. While this hasn't been confirmed by Sony Pictures, it wouldn't be overly surprising to see the Marvel movie rushed out. Why? Well, so the studio can make its losses back from Digital sales (it's listed on Prime Video for $24.99 to buy and $19.99 to rent).

As J.C. Chandor's Kraven the Hunter unfolds, fans can't help but feel forlorn even before the movie ends. That's because they know this is more than likely the final live-action film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (Ssu). Though, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is still in production, it does seem like Kraven is finishing the live-action shared universe.

However, there is a key avenue that Marvel can follow after the Sony partnership didn't reap its full dividends: Disney+. The streaming service can save this superhero franchise in the form of animated series that are meant to extend what these movies tried to accomplish.

Sony continued to expand its spider-verse this year, introducing various heroes, anti-heroes and now, a man who is typically a villain. That man? Kraven the Hunter.

Played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson — one of the rare actors who have had crossover in the MCU (he played Pietro Maximoff) and Sony’s spider-verse — Sergei Kravinoff is at the center of the film, as he develops animal-based superpowers. This deviates from the character of the comics, who is typically just a very intense big game hunter that hates spiders — hence his proclivity to hunt Spider-Man.

But this is an origin story, one that only hints at Kraven’s future path with Spider-Man. We’re not going to spoil things for you though.

Remember back when Madam Web came out and we all hoped Sony would do better with its Marvel properties with Kraven the Hunter? Yeah, we need to keep hoping. It seems as if Sony just doesn’t even care about these Marvel movies anymore.

Kraven the Hunter is about a Russian man named Sergei Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson from Nosferatu) who survived a lion attack as a boy when a girl named Calypso (Ariana DeBose from I.S.S.) gave him a special elixir. After Sony’s recent Marvel misfires on 2022’s Morbius and this year’s Madame Web, I wasn’t holding out too much hope for yet another Marvel villain origin story when I headed to the press screening of Kraven the Hunter. Its shuffling around the release schedule didn’t give me much hope, and word spread from someone at a rival studio that the exhibitor screening didn’t go well, also dampening my hopes.

But I always try to go into a movie with an open mind, and in this case, although Kraven is a well-known villain in the comic book world and has popped up here and there, a starring movie wasn’t top of my list.

Picture this: filmmaker Jc Chandor directing a Marvel movie with Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the villain Kraven The Hunter, facing off against Spider-Man or Black Panther as written by Ryan Coogler. If you watch “Kraven The Hunter” and watch Taylor-Johnson’s commanding presence and what Chandor is capable of—as a filmmaker and a budding action director— you can imagine this idea being a worthwhile film with Kraven being a laudable successor to a ruthless and unmerciful Killmonger-type antagonist.

Sony, in association with Marvel, delivers its latest supervillain origin story with Kraven the Hunter, a cinematic death knell that suggests perhaps fans have been too harsh about the Venom trilogy by comparison. As Deadpool would say, Kraven arrives "at a bit of a low point," and proceeds to pummel its source material into the ground. Granted, the comic book iteration of Kraven's modus operandi was to hunt Spider-Man simply because the most dangerous game is the most thrilling to hunt. There's not much meat to the material, but director J. C. Chandor fails to elevate what he's given to work with.

Have you ever arrived at a New Year’s Eve party about 20 minutes or so after the ball has dropped? No matter if things are still raging or starting to break up, there’s a distinct sense that you missed something vital about the event, and that despite how much you or others may try, the air’s already been let out of the room. That’s the sad state currently faced by “Kraven the Hunter,” a movie that releases in theaters mere days after the announcement that the film marks the official end of Sony’s Marvel Universe.

This isn’t an instance of a movie being caught with its cinematic universe pants down, however; the end credits don’t feature a slew of teases for movies that will now never happen. It’s more quietly tragic then that the movie cuts to credits with no mid-credits scene, no post-credits scene,...

I hate to admit it, but some part of me — certainly not my eyes or ears, but some part of me, at least — is going to miss Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which the studio is reportedly putting on pause on account of its widespread (and frequently hilarious) creative and commercial failures. Sure, that’s a pretty good reason to rethink an ill-conceived mega-franchise, let alone one that’s named after a character who basically wasn’t allowed to appear in it. And sure, releasing two films as misbegotten as “Madame Web” in the same calendar year is the kind of thing that elevates meme-worthy corporate malfeasance into a subject worthy of a bestselling book about how things went wrong.

But to behold J.C. Chandor’s monumentally goofy “Kraven the Hunter” is to appreciate how refreshing it could be to watch a superhero movie that seemed totally oblivious to the monocultural ecosystem that created it.

Jc Chandor is diving into the world of comic book movies with Kraven The Hunter. A big-budget, studio-backed comic-book origin story may seem like an unexpected fit for the director of prestige drama films like All is Lost and A Most Violent Year, but J.C. Chandor says he found the origin story of Marvel's iconic supervillain Kraven the Hunter to be irresistible. Universal Pictures’ blockbuster musical “Wicked” has been named best picture by the National Board of Review, the organization announced on Wednesday, in addition to taking home the directing prize for Jon M. Chu and a special award for the collaboration of stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

Over the last 40 years, most of the winners of NBR’s best film has gone on to receive an Oscar nomination for best picture, with the exception of films like 1998’s “Gods and Monsters,” 2000’s “Quills” and 2014’s “A Most Violent Year.” In the 1980s, there were technically two misses with 1987’s “Empire of the Sun” and 1983’s “Betrayal,” the latter of which won in a tie with “Terms of Endearment.” So far this decade, Spike Lee’s war drama “Da 5 Bloods” (2020) is the only film to fail to achieve Oscar recognition. Kraven the Hunter has a complex relationship with the Sony/Marvel fandom. Since 2018, screenwriter Richard Wenk has been dutiful about creating a movie about the underrated and underexposed anti-hero of the jungle. It's been a roller coaster with this crew, namely for fans of the Sinister Six (more on that later).

The problem is Sony Pictures can't get out of its own way. The timeline has been much longer than expected, and each delay has spiked nerd anxiety. Sony’s Marvel Comics adaptation Kraven the Hunter is set to reach theatres on December 13th. This movie is, along with Morbius, Madame Web, and the Venom trilogy, part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (which was formerly known as the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters), which consists of Marvel adaptations that doesn’t have the creative team of Marvel Studios behind them, so therefore they’re not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony is able to make these films because they own the movie rights to all characters that were originally introduced in the pages of Spider-Man comics. The financial success of the Venom movies aside, these movies haven’t tended to go over well with movie-goers – and the film’s director, J. C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year) recently asked that people give Kraven the Hunter the chance to wash away the bad taste left by Morbius and Madame Web.

Despite the relatively light release year, a welcome spread of films this holiday season brings us good tidings and cheer. From indies to majors, from talking lions to dog-women, there’s variety under the tree this year, offering a mix of blockbuster studio baubles, idiosyncratic character-driven Hanukkah presents, and new stocking-stuffers from stalwart filmmakers.

The “Substance” actress and Hollywood icon is being honored by Metrograph with a five-film series of Moore’s most beloved features, as curated by the theater. Titled “We Want Moore,” the mini festival begins September 13.

“The rapturous reception of Demi Moore’s performance in Coralie Fargeat’s ‘The Substance’ at this year’s Cannes Film Festival seems to have reminded many people that the New Mexico-born actress is a bona fide movie star — not just in terms of box office receipts and magazine cover shoots, but in her seemingly effortless ability to command the screen every time she walks into frame,” the Metrograph press statement reads. “In ‘We Want Moore,’ we’ve brought together some other timely reminders.”

Selected films screening in 35mm include Moore’s iconic turns in “Ghost,” “Indecent Proposal,” and “Striptease,” which Moore recently told Variety was one of her most under-appreciated performances.

Kraven the Hunter director J.C. Chandor teased what fans should expect to see from Sony Pictures next Marvel movie. Before signing on for Kraven the Hunter, Chandor is best known for his work in the acclaimed 2014 crime drama A Most Violent Year, which was led by Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain.

Speaking with Deadline, Chandor continued to hype up his upcoming live-action film adaptation of Kraven the Hunter, promising that fans will definitely be surprised at what theyve got in store for them. "Im extremely proud of the work we have all done together on Kraven, and when the movie finally gets its chance to be seen I think its gonna surprise the hell out of a lot of people," he said. The outlet notes that the films multiple release delays were necessary for Chandor, because it gave the creative team the time "to sharpen the characters and tighten the plot.

The newly released footage reveals more of Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the title character as well as offering our first look at another beloved Spidey supervillain: The Rhino. Directed by J. C.
