And what interview with love horror would be complete withthough a conversation about and Howard’s horror influences?

Stars: Joseph Millson, Meenu Mishra, Anand Krishna Goyal, Sandip Datta Gupta, Poonam Mathur, Coulsom Sujitabh, Madhu Rajesh, Niharika Singh | Written and Directed by Howard and John Ford
Howard and John Ford’s The Dead 2: India is a sequel to their previous Africa-set zombie flick; and to be honest, it’s the most auspicious of sequels… A zombie epidemic reaches the Asian subcontinent and American engineer Nicholas (Joseph Millson) attempts to trek 300 miles across stunning but deadly rural Indian landscapes to reunite with his Indian girlfriend Ishani (Meenu Mishra), aided only by plucky orphan boy Javed (Anand Gopal).
I didn’t catch The Dead, so the novelty of watching a Zombie film set anywhere other than Middle America (or Crouch End) was not lost on me…
The various locations around rural India are occasionally used rather well. Nicolas’s introductory scene is a slow pull out from extreme close up...

In a world stuffed to overflowing with zombie films of all shapes and sizes, sometimes it’s hard to find one that doesn’t make you hate the subgenre with an undying passion. Directors Howard and Jonathan Ford’s 2010 flick “The Dead” was definitely an unexpected surprise. It’s a diamond in the rough, one that should be properly investigated by those who still enjoy a good zombie romp. I’m sure there’s still a few of you left out there. The Ford brothers are returning to the world of shambling corpses with their upcoming sequel “The Dead 2: India.” It’s kind of like the original, except, you know, it’s in India. I wasn’t sure if the title made that clear. Clarification never hurt anyone. A synopsis? Why sure: The film follows the story of American engineer Nicholas Burton (Joseph Millson) in a race against time to reach his pregnant girlfriend,...

Set against the spectacular vistas and stunning scenery of Rajasthan, known as The Land of the Kings and one of the world’s first and oldest civilizations, The Dead 2: India puts the Ford Brothers’ unique apocalyptic vision on a far bigger canvas in terms of breathtaking scope,...

The Ford Brothers traded in Africa for India for their sequel to The Dead and after the near-death experiences they had filming the first movie, we don’t blame them. Continue reading to learn about the change of scenery for The Dead 2, funding the movie independently, their interest in The Dead 3, and much more:
When we talked shortly after the Us release of The Dead, you mentioned that you were considering heading back to Africa to film the sequel. That you two had a difficult shoot in Africa is an understatement. Was that why you decided to take the story to India instead?

Opening Night and Saturday
Frightfest 2013 opened on Thursday evening with Howard and John Ford’s The Dead 2: India, a sequel to their previous Africa-set zombie flick. To be honest, it wasn’t the most auspicious start to the weekend. A zombie epidemic reaches the Asian subcontinent and American engineer Nicholas (Joseph Millson) attempts to cross the country to reunite with his Indian girlfriend Ishani (Meenu Mishra), aided only by plucky orphan boy Javed (Anand Gopal). I didn’t catch The Dead, so the novelty of watching a Zombie film set anywhere other than Middle America (or Crouch End) was not lost on me.
The various locations around rural India are occasionally used rather well. Nicolas’s introductory scene is a slow pull out from extreme close up to a panoramic shot of him dangling from a wind turbine, which works really well and there several nicely implemented vistas. Much...

Howard and Jonathan Ford’s The Dead took the simple, surprisingly effective route of relocating a traditional zombie outbreak to the deserts of West Africa. In The Dead 2: India, the zombie plague has spread and the barren African landscape has been swapped for a fiery Indian panorama of scorched red rock, abandoned temples and teeming Mumbai slums. Dark, raw and visually stunning, the Ford Brothers’ latest feature is every bit as powerful as its predecessor.
Story-wise, we’re on familiar ground, as a new set of characters struggle to maintain their humanity amidst scenes of widespread desolation. Up and coming actor Joseph Millson stars as Us electrical engineer Nicholas, who makes the decision to travel across miles of zombie-infested countryside to rescue his pregnant Indian girlfriend, Ishani (Meenu Mishra). He teams up with street-orphan Javed (played by a very likeable Anand Gopal), and the film becomes a sort of...

I have not seen Howard Ford and Jon Ford's The Dead, and I wasn't sure going in to the sequel if that would hinder my understanding or enjoyment of it. I was informed that The Dead 2: India bears no narrative relation to the first one (other than the presence of zombies), so following the story would not be a problem. And it wasn't; it was straightforward. But as for enjoyment... well, I can say that I didn't hate it, as I often do when the zombie trope gets pulled out yet again. The Fords do seem to be trying to dig a little deeper into metaphor and social commentary; but while The Dead 2 certainly has more to recommend it than a lot of recent...

The Dead 2: India
Written by Howard J. Ford and Jonathan Ford

United Kingdom, 2013
“You’re all adorable,” said Bobcat Goldthwait. The self-professed “dude from Police Academy” was on hand to give
the introductory speech to this year’s 14th annual Film4 Frightfest, and he couldn’t help but keep informing the audience how “adorable” they all were. They sure weren’t frightening; not many had deigned to play dress-up despite dutiful encouragement, aside from one individual who stood out by virtue of his Headless Horseman outfit. How he managed to watch and enjoy the films through the fabric of his fake neck is anyone’s guess but, with his exception, everybody else was simply adorable.
Goldthwait proclaimed all of cinema to be a collection of horror movies, each dealing with life, death, and rebirth in some capacity. He then pondered whether...

This bank holiday weekend, Empire Leicester Square is once again haunted by the annual Film4 Frightfest. Five days, three screens and a few dozen premieres, debuts, sequels and rereleases – there should be plenty to keep horror aficionados safe from the holiday sunshine.
It all kicks off with Thursday night’s premiere of The Dead 2: India, Howard & Jon Ford’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed original which screened at Frightfest 2010. As the title suggests, the zombie outbreak has bestowed itself upon India, so expect to see hero Nicholas Burton trek across some striking landscapes, albeit tailed by a zombie horde.
There are many more sequels on offer, including the return of one infamous killer doll in Curse of Chucky; V/H/S 2, a follow-up to last year’s most popular horror portmanteau; and I Spit on Your Grave 2, the sequel to a remake that left a bad taste in many a mouth.

The World Premiere of Howard and Jon Ford’s The Dead 2: India sold out in record time at this year’s Film4 FrightFest. So in an unprecedented move the organizers added another mop-up screening, taking place two days later on Saturday August 24th to cope with the ticket demand. It seems the massive outpouring of admiration and love that the Fords found the first time around with The Dead is showing no sign of abating, and it’s the reason why they decided to make a sequel so fast.
“The Dead enjoyed international praise and a flood of fan support since its 2010 release," says Howard Ford. “And Jon and I knew we’d get around to making a sequel one day as there was plenty of scope to where we could take our idea of abject horror and emotional devastation presented against a stunning natural backdrop. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but this bothers me. We previously covered what I deemed a zombies in Africa feature film titled The Dead, which toured the international film festival circuit successfully, and was released last year, reportedly grossing some $10 million worldwide.
