For a horror fan, the month of October is naturally designated for everything related to Halloween. So this month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies that take place on or around October 31st. As usual, though, these selections can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

This month’s Halloween-themed offerings include zombies, witchcraft, killers, and more.

The Midnight Hour is a great warm-up for the Halloween season, right before diving into heavier or scarier movies. This telefilm originally aired on ABC, then later showed up on cable. While it didn’t open to rave reviews, it has certainly found an audience over the years. The plot is simple enough: teens fool around with magic and accidentally raise an evil sorceress on Halloween. As the night goes on, the town is taken over by ghouls and monsters.

Boo: “The Conners” tried to hand ABC a Happy Halloween, but the rest of the network’s Tuesday primetime lineup didn’t provide much of a treat.

CBS was No. 1 among total viewers on Mischief Night, when NBC was tops among adults 18-49.

NBC was first in ratings with a 1.7 rating/7 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and second in total viewers with an average of 8.1 million, according to preliminary numbers. “The Voice” at 8 p.m. received a 1.6/7 and 8.8 million viewers. “This Is Us” at 9 posted a 2.1/9 and 8.8 million viewers. At 10, “New Amsterdam” had a 1.3/6 and 6.8 million viewers.

CBS and ABC tied for second in ratings, both with a 1.1/5. CBS was first in total viewers with 9.7 million, ABC was third with 4.9 million.

For CBS, “NCIS” at 8 put up a 1.3/6 and 12.1 million viewers. At 9, “FBI” got a 1.0/4 and 9.4 million viewers.

There's nothing like Halloween in Hollywood!

Stars went all out celebrating the spookiest day of the year -- not just on Oct. 31, but for practically the whole week leading up to it!

Kelly Clarkson kicked off Halloween weekend with her iHeartRadio Album Release Party at the iHeartRadio Theater in Burbank, California, on Oct. 27. The live event included a Q&A session as well as a performance, where she sang a few of her new songs like “Love So Soft” and “Heart,” as well as her classics, including “Because of You” and “Breakaway.”

Oregon’s newest film festival offers up a world premiere and a whole lot of other goodies.‘Boys in the Trees’ features clowns on the bikes.

The Timberline Lodge located at Mt. Hood, Oregon is set to be home for The Overlook Film Festival — a brand-new horror film festival stuffed with 39 films (22 features and 17 shorts from 16 countries). Naturally this is the perfect setting for horror hounds to gather as the Timberline was famously used as the exterior setting in Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, The Shining.

The festival is scheduled to kick off in a little over a week on April 27th (and run through the 30th) and we now know that the Opening Night Selection will be the world premiere of Stephanie, the new supernatural thriller from director Akiva Goldsman and Blumhouse Productions. The newly formed Overlook Film Festival has announced it inaugural year programming lineup, including 37 films (20 features and 17 short films from 16 countries), along with a bevy of location-appropriate genre-themed parties, interactive events, and live experiences. This year, the festival will also fete director Roger Corman with their Master of Horror Award. The award “was established to honor a living legend who has contributed lasting innovations to the genre throughout a long career, inspiring new filmmakers for years to come.”

The fest is styled a 4-day celebration of horror that runs from April 24 – 30 at the historic Timberline Lodge located in Mt. Hood, Oregon, featured in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” as the location of the infamous Overlook Hotel. The new festival comes from some of the same minds behind the now-defunct Stanley Film Festival, a similar horror-themed gathering based in a hotel in Estes Park, Colorado that inspired Stephen King to write his 1977 “Shining” novel.

In some parts of the United States, the night before Halloween is known as Mischief Night, and this year, a hacker group spent October 30th causing some mischief in the YouTube community. On that day, the entity known as Ourmine engineered a substantial security breach that targeted the tech platform VidIQ in order to hit popular YouTube creators like iJustine, KittiesMama, and Peter Hollens.

VidIQ, which is utilized by many top YouTube accounts, helps its users manage and optimize their channels. One of the tools it offers is the ability to edit video titles and descriptions en masse, and after executing its break-in, Ourmine exploited that feature. Its members used the titles and descriptions of popular videos to boast about its actions, telling viewers that their favorite creators had been “Hacked by OurMine.”

As Night Comes is a dark teen drama that takes a nod from the spreading “bully hoodie” trend that was popularized in England with films such as Heartless and Citadel.

Early on in the movie, a very obvious nod is made to A Clockwork Orange and it becomes apparent that director and screenwriter Richard Zelniker was attempting to draw similarities. A bunch of kids who feel looked down upon go out as a gang, in this film it’s on a self-proclaimed holiday dubbed Mischief Night, and start beating up people they deem accepting of the beat down.

It's perfectly fitting that the newest Rob Zombie film would be announced on the weekend of Halloween. And while his next project will not be a continuation of the rebooted Halloween franchise that he began back in 2007, the new film is still set on the ghastly, ghoulish holiday. Unfortunately, it may also serve to tick off the folks over at Marvel Comics. The Hollywood Reporter received news of the new Rob Zombie movie out of the on-going American Film Market, and says that the project is appropriately titled 31. The movie is based on an original screenplay by the director, and is partially inspired by a strange statistic that says that more people disappear and are never found again on Halloween than on any other day of the calendar year. After reading the plot synopsis for Terminator: Genisys today, some of you may have thought it was a very early April Fools' prank. Or a slightly early instance of a Mischief Night trick making its way onto the Internet. Nice job, Paramount, with your equivalent of toilet papering my house! Good joke, making that title a little less goofy by comparison! Last year, James put together a comprehensive guide, of every piece of Halloween programming and horror movie that would air during the month of October. When I asked him if we were doing the same again this year, he acted like I was an idiot. Why wouldn’t we? With that knowledge in my head, I decided we would expand a little bit this year, and throw together a comprehensive DVD & Blu-ray buyer’s guide for the months of September and October. There are some really great horror releases between now and the end of October. Some studios wasted their opportunity to rope in the rabid genre fans. Fox, for example, except for a new Wrong Turn film, and a few catalog releases making their Blu-ray debuts(Exorcist sequels), has a calendar filled with nonsensical re-releases of titles that are already widely available, and at cheap prices.

Rlj Entertainment has just released the official trailer for Werewolf Rising. This independent feature is from Ruthless Pictures and director BC Furtney (New Terminal Hotel). Ruthless Pictures has developed several horror features as of late, including: Mischief Night (2013) and All Hallow's Eve (2013). Trained dancer and choreographer Raj Parmar will be showcasing his expert dance skills across the globe, as the successful Channel 4 documentary Big Ballet is set to air on the American arts network, Ovation.

The multi-talented choreographer is dancing onto screens in the USA, after he took his leave from Bollywood dancing to try his hand at ballet for the show. Impressively, beating 500 hopefuls for a much-coveted spot in the documentary, Raj ultimately landed one of the lead roles as the heinous villain Baron Von Rothbart in the much-loved Swan Lake. Wilkinson will develop and oversee all original productions for the new venture and handle acquisitions and will work alongside his longtime writing and producing partner Richard Schenkman.

The pair co-wrote and is currently developing action-horror Miscreation and ghost thriller Haunted.

Wilkinson previously worked at Kino Lorber where he launched the Horizon Movies label. Prior to Kino Lorber he served a 10-year stint at MGM Home Entertainment and Starz / Anchor Bay Entertainment.

With Halloween in the air, we thought it would be fun to reach out to the horror genre's biggest and brightest stars - both legends in the industry and up-and-coming superstars - to ask them two quick questions: What's your biggest fear, and what's your favorite scary movie? Classic horror battles resurrected!  Jesse Baget's Ruthless Pictures is moving forward on a new pictures that pits two famous monsters against one another.

Frankenstein vs. The Mummy begins shooting at the end of this year.  Damien Leone will write and direct.  Leone previously teamed with Ruthless on this week's releases All Hallows' Eve and Mischief Night.

The story revolves around the mummy of a cursed pharaoh and a reanimated corpse that terrorize a medical university. Only an Egyptologist and a college professor, the deranged Dr. Frankenstein, may be able to stop the creatures before it's too late.

During our recent coverage of All Hallows’ Eve, director Damien Leone teased his next film. Here are new details on Frankenstein Vs. The Mummy, which will begin filming at the end of this year:

This title stars Danielle Lozeau (Legion), Andrea Monier and Bill Oberst Jr. The film was directed by first time director Evan Tramel, from Jesse Baget's script (Mischief Night). And now, a mysterious trailer is available for The Black Water Vampire. The film's wider story involves freeing an innocent man. One man is behind bars, but another is still killing women near the Black Water woods. Several flmmakers hope to exonerate Raymond Banks (Bill Oberst Jr.), the man behind bars. To do this, they will have to venture into the murderer's killing grounds.
