Years before social media had this much power over society, Gossip Girl had already warned us about the dangers of it, even though the characters in the series were not really paying attention. This teen drama show based on the novels by Cecily von Ziegesar, adapted by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, aired from 2007 to 2012 on The CW network. It follows the exclusive and drama-filled lives of the Upper East Side's high-class teens, who happen to be closely scrutinized by Gossip Girl, an anonymous blogger that thrives on chit-chat and seems to know everything.
The show is a clear demonstration of the influence that social media has if it is not properly managed, going so far as to run people's lives. Even though Manhattan teenagers knew how unhealthy this blog was and all the effects it had on people and relationships, they kept on reading it, effectively expanding its audience day by day.

The second narrative film and the third overall in almost as many years to cover similar, if not identical ground, Winner, a comedy-drama/biopic centered on the uniquely named Reality Winner, the ex-U.S. Air Force veteran, translator extraordinaire, and Nsa whistleblower, fully delivers on its promise of an idiosyncratic character study and exploration of what, if anything, the idea and ideal of patriotism still means in 21st-century America. Directed by Susanna Fogel from a screenplay by New York Magazine writer and University of Iowa professor Kerry Howley, Winner gives viewers rare insight into the Texas-born whistleblower from age 10 or 11 through her post-incarceration life. Framed as a rueful, cynical look back by Winner in voiceover mode,...

There’s plenty to look forward to in Hulu’s incoming slate, including the latest “American Horror Story” installment, BAFTA winner “The Banshees of Inisherin,” and new “The Kardashians.” But unfortunately, the streamer has to lose to gain, and new content means a library cleanout.
Throughout the month, Hulu will lose nearly 100 movies and series to make room, including multiple entries in “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” franchises, Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and many others.

Horror delights, rom-coms and a new sci-fi series starring Christoph Waltz are just a few of the highlights arriving on Amazon Prime Video in February. That’s not to mention noteworthy library additions like “A.I.,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Almost Famous.

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.
Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

While the 2020 SXSW Film Festival has been canceled due to the coronavirus, IndieWire is reviewing select titles from this year’s edition.
Filmmaker Kris Rey (formerly known as Kris Swanberg) has long trafficked in stories about compelling women who temper awkward moments by bonding with inappropriate new pals. In her most widely seen feature to date, 2015 Sundance entry “Unexpected,” she matched up a pregnant high school teacher with an expecting student with illuminating results. That concept takes on more amusing results with “I Used to Go Here,” Rey’s best film, which still smacks of her usual obsessions. However, armed with her funniest material to date and a winning performance from Gillian Jacobs,

Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd are getting back together for the Mrc Television limited series The Shrink Next Door which is based on the 2019 No. 1 new Wondery and Bloomberg Media podcast. The last time the duo starred together was in 2013’s Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.
Also inspired by true events, The Shrink Next Door is a dark comedy following the bizarre relationship between psychiatrist to the stars Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf played by Rudd, and his longtime patient Martin “Marty” Markowitz, played by Ferrell. Over the course of their relationship, the all-too-charming Ike slowly takes over Marty’s life, even moving into Marty’s home and taking over his family business. The series explores how a seemingly normal doctor-patient dynamic morphs into an unprecedentedly exploitative one filled with manipulation, power grabs, and dysfunction at its finest.

“Winner,” a biopic about the leaker of the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election intelligence report, is in the works at Big Beach, with “Booksmart” co-writer Susanna Fogel on board to direct.
The film follows the real life story of Reality Leigh Winner, a former American intelligence specialist who was the first to expose Russia’s interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. She was arrested in 2017 and is currently serving a five-and-a-half year prison sentence. The script is written by Kerry Howley, who also wrote the 2017 New York Magazine article, “Who is Reality Winner?”
Dani Melia and Peter Saraf of Big Beach will produce alongside Amanda Phillips, who brought the project in.

There will be a lot of reunions on ABC this October.
The broadcast network has revealed that it will be running a special "Cast from the Past" week which will find several stars and behind the scenes talent reuniting across the network's roster of TV shows.
Of those reunions, Charmed's Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs will be stopping by an episode of Grey's Anatomy, bringing them back together with Krista Vernoff and Andy Reaser, who were writers on Charmed.
It's certainly an exciting direction for ABC because it's a whole week dedicated to talent from the past coming aboard special episodes of the network's shows.
Cast Members and Creative Teams From Blues Brothers 2000, Castle, Cheers, Crazy Rich Asians, The Drew Carey Show, Girlfriends, House, Think Like a Man, and Wet Hot American Summer will all be featured.
Confused?

ABC is going all-in on nostalgia this fall, with a “Cast from the Past” week of stunt casting set to reunite the stars of “Charmed,” “Cheers” and more across the network’s programming.
Beginning on Oct. 7, actors and behind-the-scenes talent from “Blues Brothers 2000,” “Castle,” “Charmed,” “Cheers,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Drew Carey Show,” “House,” “Think Like a Man” and “Wet Hot American Summer” will make appearances on the network’s dramas and comedies.
The news builds on the announcement last week that “black-ish” star Tracee Ellis Ross will be joined by her former “Girlfriends” co-stars on an upcoming episode of the family sitcom.

When Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins’ “Booksmart” landed on the Black List of best-liked unproduced scripts back in 2009, it promised a tantalizing twist on the high school comedy: “Two overachieving high school seniors realize the only thing they haven’t accomplished is having boyfriends, and each resolves to find one by prom.” Despite the heat of a Black List endorsement, the screenplay languished, eventually getting a 2014 rewrite from filmmaker Susanna Fogel (best known for her appropriately female friendship-powered films “Life Partners” and “The Spy Who Dumped Me”). And then… nada, not for whole years.
But you can’t keep a good idea down.
Hot off the production of what would become a smash hit for Netflix, the charming rom-com “Set It Up,” rising screenwriter Katie Silberman was tapped to draft her own version of the “Booksmart” script in the spring of 2018. No, really, she was very hot off the production:...

As I walked out of the theater after seeing The Spy Who Dumped Me, I found myself trying to narrow down what the most outrageous scene in the action-comedy film was. When Kate McKinnon casually pushes a naked man off a balcony to his death? Or maybe when Mila Kunis is remarkably cool with watching her meth-smoking Uber driver having his head blown apart by a rogue bullet?
The film from director Susanna Fogel, who previously directed the 2014 indie comedy Life Partners, can sometimes feel like it can't quite decide what it wants to be: a hardcore action movie, with all the aforementioned shocks? A tender study of the bonds between best friends? Mission Impossible with a lot more toilet humor? But that's also exactly what makes it so entertaining: it doesn't pigeonhole itself into one single category.

‘The Spy Who Dumped Me’ Film Review: Kate McKinnon Shines in Joke-and-Dagger Pairing With Mila Kunis
Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon, whether in a bar or a car or lands afar, look like they’re enjoying themselves in the buddy action romp “The Spy Who Dumped Me.”
This kind of co-star coziness, however, can be a 50/50 proposition for an audience. Are the actors flaunting their frolic at the expense of entertainment cohesion? Is it a home movie writ large? Or does the onscreen fun invite along summer moviegoers eager to be whisked away?
The answer with director and co-writer Susanna Fogel’s girls-on-the-run misadventure is a decided… it depends. As in, from scene to scene, “The Spy Who Dumped Me” either lands the appropriately silly tone of freewheeling camaraderie or feels like a lot of money and time haphazardly spent.

One of the best moments in “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” an uneven but often funny action-comedy, gets at the essence of its feminist satire: Kate McKinnon is tied up, bloodied, and completely at the mercy of her cold-blooded captor. But instead of crying for help, she retorts, “Please go fuck yourself,” setting all the signifiers of a damsel in distress ablaze. After stealing the show time and again in supporting roles during her off-seasons from “Saturday Night Live,” McKinnon finally scores a lead in “Spy” that foregrounds her brilliant capacity to tear apart familiar faces and tropes with constant glee, and she outpaces this discardable entertainment every step of the way.
McKinnon’s near-subversive feistiness usually outpaces whatever comedic vehicle she lands in — “Ghostbusters” would have been saved if she’d taken center stage — almost to the point where filmmakers seem coy about giving her too much space. In “The Spy Who Dumped Me,...

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for The Spy Who Dumped Me, the studio's new action-comedy starring Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon, arriving in theaters August 3. The trailer debuted earlier today on The Ellen Show, where both Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon made an appearance to showcase the first footage. Director Susanna Fogel also shed light on the plot and the production in a recent interview.
The Spy Who Dumped Me follows Audrey (Mila Kunis) and Morgan (Kate McKinnon), thirty-year-old best friends from Los Angeles, who are unexpectedly thrust into an international conspiracy when Audrey's ex-boyfriend (Justin Theroux) shows up at her apartment with a team of deadly assassins on his trail.

For better or worse, Adam Brody will always be remembered as Seth Cohen from The O.C. The affable and awkward teen is easy to find inside the weathered and wiser 37-year-old Brody, but the San Diego native might never be able to shake his early-aughts pop culture iconography. Despite that infamous role, Brody has had a pretty consistent career over the last two decades, playing opposite Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, being directed by famed playwright Neil Labute and making guest appearances on beloved TV shows like House of Lies and The League. This month, he’s in the buddy comedy Big Bear, where he gets to sport a pretty mean mustache, and returns with the second season of StartUp on Crackle.
With two such diverse roles coming out in the same month and nostalgia for shows like Gilmore Girls and The O.C. at an all-time high, Brody sits down...

Mission: Impossible, Avengers, Dwayne Johnson, Jurassic World, Ant-Man and more are lining up to meet you next summer. Oh, and The Statham.
With summer blockbuster season 2017 in full swing, and with Fast & Furious 8 speeding over the $1bn mark already, a bunch of filmmakers are furiously putting together their films for release this time next year (or thereabouts). Here, as things stand, is the state of summer blockbuster season 2018. We’ve veered towards UK release dates on the whole, but as always, things can quickly change.
Also, we’ve not included unnamed films: Universal, for instance, has reserved a slot for one of its classic monster universe movies, but not told anybody what it is yet. As more information pops up, we’ll keep this list up to date…

Before it premiered, I published my interview with co-creator Judd Apatow, and now that many people have had a chance to watch all 10 episodes, here's a more spoiler-filled conversation with co-creator and star Paul Rust and his co-star Gillian Jacobs, where they talk about the "land rush" to land Jacobs when Community was canceled the first time, how the show tried to achieve a balance between the dysfunction of its two main characters, what it was like for Jacobs and Rust to do sex scenes while Rust's wife, Love's third creator Lesley Arfin, was watching, and more. This will also be a good place for everyone to talk about their thoughts on the season, Mickey and Gus, the awesomeness of Bertie, and everything else, coming up just as soon as I like seeing a...

Miss You Already is the rare cancer movie that’s uninterested in holding the audience hostage. Rather, it uses the context of a cancer story to show the totality of two women in their most difficult moments. With a warm and crowd-pleasing, but unusually sharp, script from Morwenna Banks and intimate and bracing direction from Catherine Hardwicke, Miss You Already recontextualizes beats of the cancer movie sub-genre into a story about the bulletproof power of female friendship.
Through a flurry of shared memories, the connection of leading ladies, Milly (Toni Collette) and Jess (Drew Barrymore), is established. They are ostensibly types, with Jess playing the sensitive humanitarian, and Milly playing the wild child, but those characteristics don’t predetermine their actions. It’s here and throughout that Hardwicke demonstrates a quietly subversive voice. Collette’s Milly isn’t demonized for being outwardly sexual or shacking up with a rockstar. In...

It would be slightly unfair to prattle on about Life Partners (2014) in the context of gay/lesbian films. First and foremost, it's a comedy and the lesbianism of one of the characters is, in some ways, incidental and mostly uncontroversial. That is to say, there's no struggle with sexual identity or coming of age or dark psycho-sexual elements to the film that dominate most of its consœurs. That said, it does have a scene where they play a game called "How many lesbians can you fit in a Subaru?" so I think we can say this is a lesbian film. If director Susanna Fogel and her writing partner Joni Lefkowitz can ironically bring up stereotypes, then I can point out that they do a grand job of undermining the stultifying stereotype that lesbians (and films about them) can only be solemn or tokens. Life Partners is well-rounded,...

Two days prior, the pregnant Gossip Girl actress, 29, and The O.C. actor, 35, stepped out for lunch in L.A. The outing marked the first time that the mom-to-be's baby bump had been photographed. Brody, sporting his usual scruff, paired a light blue tee with dark blue jeans and covered his hair with a ball cap. This will be the first child for the Life Partners co-stars, who got...

Maternity Syndrome: Tierney’s Undefined Comedy Explores Notions of Motherhood
What begins as a concept full of pleasurably subversive possibilities quickly turns into yet another diluted tale of female arrested development in Preggoland, revolving around an emotionally stunted woman who learns an important lesson in the nick of time, thereby exponentially enhancing her own life experience and those in her orbit. Though it’s not as obnoxiously adolescent as its Diablo Cody inspired title suggests, actress turned screenwriter Sonja Bennett’s screenplay fails to use the concept to explore the actual issues underlying her character’s inability to successfully complete the normal trajectory of her sanctioned heteronormative peer group. And so, Jacob Tiernay‘s fourth feature film becomes another one of those wanly charming comedies about how to curb one’s drifting, wayward attitude in order to gain re-admittance into the fold.

We reacted to Inherent Vice about the same way everyone else did, we were split. Even if we overlook the automatic lower rating that I have to give everything with Joaquin Phoenix now, there was something a little too off the wall, and a little too boring about it for me. Shane gave it very high marks though, and that’s about the way the critic community at large felt about it.
We actually spent most of the time talking about the upcoming awards, the general state of film during the year, and the other two movies.
The Homesman was disappointing Oscar bait, that obviously didn’t quite work out. Considering the cast, you have to hope for more, and the screenplay just doesn’t add up too much.
