The Netflix viewership charts witnessed a major shakeup this weekend, with the longtime champion KPop Demon Hunters slipping down the rankings amid new competition. The animated film has emerged as Netflix's most-watched title of all time, having debuted only a couple of months ago. In those months, it has become a fixture on the charts, despite having had to deal with movies such as Happy Gilmore 2 and Night Always Comes. KPop Demon Hunters fell to the number two spot recently, following the release of The Thursday Murder Club. But the top 10 list also included a rather unexpected title.
Claiming the number 10 spot on Netflix's global rankings on August 31 was the Indian movie Tehran.

Director Shoojit Sircar, in this exclusive interview, talks with Subhash K Jha about his 2013 drama Madras Café, starring John Abraham.
Madras Café is your most political film?
Madras Café was a very personal film, as it was very shocking for me when that incident happened where Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. I was in Delhi and it shook me. Before Rajiv Gandhi, even Indira Gandhi was also assassinated. So, you know, I was in Delhi during both the tragic events. This happened and, you know, it completely shook me, especially Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination. Subhash K Jha turns to focus on Shoojit Sircar’s Madras Café starting John Abraham as it celebrates 12 years, in this new edition of This Day That Year.
There is so much history to reclaim from our past. Madras Café does it with enrapturing elan. This is cinema signifying a coming of age with unforgettable visuals and drama and a rousing mature career-defining performance by its leading man.
If only history could be changed by art. Cinema is a powerful medium for socio-political expression and revolution. Alas, in this country entertainment engages all other aspects of life on celluloid.

Bollywood star John Abraham is betting big on geopolitical storytelling again. Following politically charged thrillers like “Madras Cafe” and “The Diplomat,” the actor-producer’s latest project, “Tehran,” plunges viewers into the shadowy world of international espionage with a taut thriller inspired by real events that hit close to home.
Directed by Arun Gopalan and produced by Maddock Films, “Tehran” fictionalizes the 2012 bomb explosion near the Israeli Embassy in Delhi, weaving a complex narrative that spans Israel, Iran and India. Abraham reprises his character from “Batla House” — based on real-life Delhi police officer Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, here renamed Acp Rajiv Kumar — as he’s pulled into a covert operation that tests loyalties across continents.
But this isn’t just another action thriller for Abraham. The project carries deep personal significance.
“The usual, predictable thing would have been to blame our neighbor. But when we did the forensics, we found out that...

The Mughal Emperor Jahangir once called the valley of Kashmir a “Paradise on Earth,” and for good reason. Centuries later, the beauty of Kashmir endures untouched, but it also happens to be one of the most heavily militarized regions in the world. Since the partition between India and Pakistan, militants have actively operated in the valley to destabilize the state, and Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar’s Ground Zero deals with the Jaish-e-Mohammed mastermind Ghazi Baba’s reign of terror. Inspired by real events, Emraan Hashmi’s war drama film is based on the life of Narendra Nath Dhar Dubey, the courageous Bsf officer who had managed to eliminate the terrorist mastermind behind the attack on the Indian Parliament in 2001. For a genre that often feels like propaganda with jingoism shoved down your throat, Deoskar’s Ground Zero stands out—it shows the struggle of those in uniform without turning...

2020 was especially cruel to our entertainment industry. One by one, we lost Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, (music composer) Wajid Khan, Basu Chatterjee, Sushant Singh Rajput, Saroj Khan, Jagdeep, S. P Balasubramaniam, Soumitra Chatterjee, and Nishikant Kamat.
Nishikant Kamat’s going; I took it personally. Though I had never met him, we shared a certain bonding. Whenever he called, he would speak in that soft, respectful voice and tell me that I should not mind if he doesn’t respond to my messages immediately as he travelled a lot.
I first reached out to Nishikant after I saw his directorial debut, that exceptional Marathi film Dombivali West in 2005, which was quickly remade into Tamil as Evano Oruvan with Madhavan in the lead. Nishikant quickly became a successful director in Bollywood. But he hardly had any friends in the Mumbai film industry except John Abraham, with whom he did the successful Force and Rocky Handsome.

What Did Anurag Kashyap Say About John Abraham’s The Diplomat? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
John Abraham has become one of Bollywood’s leading faces in action and patriotic films. From Dhoom (2004), Force (2011), Madras Cafe (2013), to Parmanu (2018), and Batla House (2019), John’s filmography is dominated by intense, adrenaline-pumping roles. His ability to command the screen with his physicality and intense performances has made him a go-to choice for action-packed entertainers.
However, while his films have consistently performed well at the box office, critics often noted that his acting prowess remained overshadowed by the larger-than-life action sequences and patriotic themes. Now, with The Diplomat, directed by Shivam Nair, John Abraham is earning praise for a performance that strips away the heroics and instead delves into the complexities of a real-life character.

“Little Jaffna,” directed by Lawrence Valin in his feature debut, is a crime drama set in Paris’ Tamil community, exploring identity within the diaspora. The film follows Michael, a Sri Lankan Tamil undercover cop, as he works within a local gang supporting the Tamil Tigers.
Valin, who also stars as Michael, brings an original viewpoint to a genre typically dominated by Western storytelling, creating a film that is deeply personal and globally significant. The district of Little Jaffna reflects the cultural and political tensions between tradition and assimilation in the immigrant experience.
The film explores identity—how it emerges from cultural heritage and personal history. Michael’s internal conflict between his Tamil roots and police duties reveals the challenges immigrants encounter while balancing cultural loyalty and societal adaptation.
The story also examines the Tamil Tigers’ impact, providing insight into how historical conflicts continue to influence diaspora communities.

“Little Jaffna“, Lawrence Valin‘s stunning directorial debut, is a gripping crime drama that offers a colourful and insightful perspective on the French Tamil diaspora. Premiering at the prestigious Venice Critics’ Week, this film quickly grabbed international cinephines’ attention for its daring voice and naïve cinematic expression. It was also screened at the Toronto Film Festival and is set to be screened at Tallinn Black Night’s Film Festival under the Best of The Fest banner.
At the film’s heart is Michael (portrayed by Valin himself), a young police officer thrust into a morally ambiguous mission. Tasked with infiltrating a local gang, he faces the daunting challenge of reconciling his duty as an officer with his deep-rooted cultural heritage and personal connections. This internal struggle forms the film’s crux, as Valin masterfully intertwines personal dilemmas with broader sociopolitical themes, highlighting the clash between personal, cultural and historical identities.

She always thought composing music for an entire film in Bollywood would mean extremely high pressure and working in a somewhat corporate structure. However, Zeb Bangash, the first Pakistani artist to serve as music director of a Bollywood film – ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ – recalls it felt more like “coming home”.
Stressing that the movie was very special as there was a real sense of creating something new, and carving out a space that was absent before, she recalls: “Alankrita Anvita, Ankur Mukherjee, Amrit Mahajan and I shared and carried that sentiment with us. It really was like finding a community. Meetings were held, not in production houses but in homes over food and music, jokes, and poetry.”
Lamenting the current non-exchange of artists between India and Pakistan, she says for her, it is not about opportunities lost vis-a-vis audiences and markets, but the fact that it shrinks an artistic community.
