    A Lean, Mean Little Flick

I saw this movie today at Motor City Nightmares, and I have to say that it really impressed me. I was, at first, a bit skeptical of the quality of the film. It looks to be shot with over-the-counter cameras, and the sound seemed a bit hollow, meaning it was probably sound from the built-in camera microphone. But the sound was at least consistent, and the video-grunge style to its shots grows on you as it goes on.

The plot is pretty simple: take a smart-aleck loser with a heroin addiction and make him play Russian roulette with his dealer, face-to-face. The premise fits the running time well; it's not overlong, and not too short. It feels like it ends right where it needs to. The action mostly takes place in a single room, but it does make very creative use out of it's location. The actors all do good work with what they have, especially the actor playing Ronnie, the gambling obsessed dealer. He has a crude charm to him that makes you want to root for him . . . almost.

The highlight of the movie may be the special effects. From the first cut to the fatal shot, this movie sprays blood like it's nobody's business. But the violence doesn't feel gratuitous or grim. In fact, this movie seems to have the same smart-aleck sense of humor Gideon has. And the neat twist at the end suggest the filmmakers had as much fun thinking this one through as they did actually shooting it.

All in all, it's limited by its budget, but this was a very fun, creative movie. The story was easy to follow, the actors were fun to watch, and I really wanted to see how it was all going to end. Highly recommended.
