Like Academy-Award-winner Zoe Saldana and Academy Award-nominated actor Sebastian Stan, Marvel actress and Emmy nominee Elizabeth Olsen has been keeping herself extremely busy with impressive and acclaimed character work when she’s not actively part of the MCU. Olsen gained much acclaim for her turn opposite Carrie Coon and Natasha Lyonne in last year’s “His Three Daughters,” for Netflix and this year, she’s starring in the sci-fi drama, “The Assessment” alongside Alicia Vikander.

Marvel has likely never gotten as close to Prestige TV as it did with the Disney+ series WandaVision. The compelling emotional story, exceptional performances, and slow-burning twists and turns earned it a reputation that elevated the show above other popcorn superhero fare. Now the star of WandaVision, Elizabeth Olsen, is joining a pilot for FX called Seven Sisters, which is being penned by Succession writer and producer Will Arbery, according to Deadline.
The story of Seven Sisters is one of a large, tight-knit family that begins to unravel when a sister (Olsen) starts communicating with a voice no one else can hear, forcing each of them to confront long-buried secrets. This project also reunites Olson with director Sean Durkin, whose award-winning feature directorial debut,Martha Marcy May Marlene, starred Olson in her movie debut. Life isn't all happiness. Accordingly, cinema frequently reflects this duality with surprising tenderness. As a result, tearjerkers are a treasured favorite among cinema fans. For some, only the best movies can elicit powerful emotions to make viewers cry. Whether a film depicts tragic real-life events or the demise of a beloved fictional character, some movies are real heartbreakers.
For a film to shatter the hearts of its audience, it first must grip them with a captivating story. These movies don't simply portray tales of tragedy; they offer light among the darkness by sprinkling in samples of joy, thus creating unforgettable, poignant pictures. There are many sad movies, and then there are those that will leave viewers sobbing.
Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on March 13, 2025: Sometimes, movie fans just want a good cry. Sad movies are a great way to feel the depths of human emotion without having to experience those feelings firsthand.

Elizabeth Olsen will lead the cast of a new FX drama series. Olsen recently appeared in The Assessment, which debuted at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, and in Netflix's His Three Daughters, with her performance in the latter receiving critical acclaim. Other notable Olsen movies and television shows include Wind River, Love & Death, Ingrid Goes West, and Liberal Arts, along with her numerous performances as Wanda Maximoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As per Deadline, Olsen is now starring in the FX drama series Seven Sisters, which has received a pilot order, and is helmed by The Iron Claw director Sean Durkin. Seven Sisters' story sees a large family breaking apart when one of the sisters (Olsen) begins talking to a voice that no one else can hear, which leads to family secrets being exposed. Exclusive: FX has given a pilot order to Seven Sisters, a drama starring Elizabeth Olsen. It comes from executive producers Will Arbery, who wrote the pilot; Sean Durkin, who will direct it; and Garrett Basch.
Seven Sisters reunites Olsen and Durkin a decade and a half after the award-winning 2011 movie Martha Marcy May Marlene, written and directed by Durkin in his feature directorial debut, which starred Olsen in her film debut.
In Seven Sisters, from FX Productions, a large, tightknit family begins to unravel when a sister (Olsen) starts communicating with a voice no one else can hear — forcing each of them to confront long-buried secrets.

A film without a cast is, miraculously, still a film. However, a cast—even if it’s just one or two actors—has undoubtedly become an integral part of a film, and for good reason. Films offer a variety of adventures that can be both so relatable and not so relatable. It’s the faces on the screen who the audience attaches themselves to, whether it’s to deliver a humane message or thrilling escapism, these faces help bring the audience to the film’s home stretch. Hence, who these actors are is of much importance, and who better to assist a filmmaker’s decision-process than a casting director.

WandaVisionis arguably the best MCU TV series on Disney+. The show connects the superhero genre with sitcoms to create the ultimate grieving metaphor. It also uses characters people already know and love from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and sets others up for new and exciting projects, such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Agatha All Along. As Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) accesses her full powers, she creates the fictional town of Westview to live an idyllic sitcom life with her late lover, Vision (Paul Bettany).
WandaVision makes the audience laugh, cry, and follow Wanda's pain throughout a perfectly balanced series that shows what the MCU could become if they delved deeper into the psyche of their characters. With the fantastic portrayals of Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, it became one of the most exciting superhero shows in recent years. While people already know that Wanda apparently died in...

One of the craziest awards seasons in Oscar history concluded on Sunday with the coronation of Sean Baker’s “Anora,” a comedy about an outer-boroughs sex worker that was shot in guerrilla fashion for just $6 million. Despite its art-house origins, this most independent of indie films was celebrated as the year’s best by the Hollywood establishment. That’s a credit to Baker’s talent and to Neon, the studio that guided 2019’s “Parasite” to a similarly unorthodox victory when it became the first non-English-language film to take the best picture prize. By choosing “Anora,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, once dismissed as old and out of touch, has demonstrated that it is open to movies that push the envelope, in terms of both language (there are more than 400 uses of the F-word in the film) and sexuality.

Marking the feature directorial debut of veteran music video helmer Fleur Fortuné, the film follows Mia (Olsen) and Aaryan (Patel), a successful couple who hope to become parents in a near future where resources are extremely limited and the government keeps firm control over reproduction. In looking to do so, the pair are assigned an assessor named Virginia (Vikander), who moves into their home for seven days to evaluate whether they deserve to move forward in their parenting journey. From his father, a Holocaust survivor, cartoonist Art Spiegelman learned how to best utilize the limited space in a suitcase, knowledge that he then applied to his hand-drawn panels, where information has to be conveyed in a concise manner. An eminence in the realm of comics, Spiegelman is best known for “Maus,” the two-volume graphic novel about the Shoah — where the Nazis are depicted as cats and the Jews mice — based mostly on his dad’s firsthand recollections and Spiegelman’s need to grapple with the trauma he inherited from both of his parents. The subsequent, almost inescapable acclaim for “Maus” would in turn become another source of anguish for Spiegelman.

The Academy Awards nominations for 2025 will be announced on Thursday, January 23, by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott. You might have to get up a little early to see the noms, though. That is especially true if you work in the Hollywood film industry.
The Oscars themselves will be held on Sunday, March 2, from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and the host will be (thankfully) Conan O'Brien. Will he be part of a ceremony that hands out a lot of awards to Netflix movies? Maybe.
One Netflix film seems like not only a shoo-in to be nominated for Best Picture, but likely to win. More on that in a second. Here is everything else you need to know.

As the saying goes, sisterhood is powerful. It can also be maddening, enlightening, stifling, fortifying, and fascinating. Or in the case of Katie, Christina, and Rachel — played in the drama His Three Daughters by Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne, respectively — all of the above. Those seemingly contradictory complexities were precisely what writer-director Azazel Jacobs wanted to explore when he sat down to write the film, which sees the women convene at their father’s rent-controlled lower Manhattan apartment to support him at the end of his life. It’s a story about “sisters realizing not only their differences, but what’s connected them all these years and what could connect them after their parent is gone,” explains the French Exit filmmaker.
What surprised Jacobs was how this particular sisterhood so easily poured onto the page — and how he realized he was writing exclusively for Coon, Olsen, and Lyonne...

There are never enough slots in an Oscar lineup. For performers in films that haven’t been seen by enough voters, breaking through the hustle and bustle of awards season is nearly impossible. Enter a few reminders for voters to watch these six standout performances, each deserving a place in the conversation before ballots are cast.
Michele Austin – “Hard Truths” (Supporting Actress)
In Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths,” Michele Austin shines as Chantal, a single mother and hairdresser, trying to bridge an emotional chasm between herself and her depressed sister, Pansy (Marianne Jean-Baptiste). Austin brings warmth and empathy to the role, offering a vibrant, hopeful counterpoint to her sister’s unrelenting bitterness. Her nuanced performance captures people’s helplessness when someone they love is in crisis. It’s an unforgettable turn in an intimate character study filled with moments of unexpected joy.

Yesterday evening, a rumour hit social media claiming that Marvel Studios is making moves to recast Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa. The news has received a mixed response, though many fans are eager to see the character back on screen.
After Boseman passed away, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever confirmed that T'Challa had also died. Shuri inherited the mantle and the sequel ended by revealing the hero secretly had a son with Nakia, a young boy also named T'Challa.
While Avengers: Secret Wars' Black Panther may be a Variant, we think Toussaint is going to be aged up before picking up where his father left off in the Mutant Saga. With all that in mind, we're now taking a look at the actors who could take over this role in the MCU.

The National Society of Film Critics anointed Nickel Boys as the best film of the year on Saturday, adding some needed luster to a movie that is considered to be on the Oscar bubble.
Based on Colson Whitehead‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Nickel Boys tells the story of two teenage boys who struggle to survive at a violent, oppressive reform school in Florida. It has been feted by critics all season, scoring 90 on Metacritic and 87 percent freshness on Rotten Tomatoes. It was also named one of the top 10 movies of the year by the American Film Institute and earned Best Picture noms from the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes, but this is the highest-profile Best Picture win for the film so far from a critics group. However, according to Gold Derby’s latest odds, it is currently predicted not to make the Best Picture field when Oscar nominations are announced in two weeks.

Because the Golden Globes shouldn’t have all the fun the first weekend of the new year, the National Society of Film Critics presented its annual film awards this Saturday, with critics gathering in New York and Los Angeles to vote on 2024’s best movies and performances.
This year’s 59th annual award for Best Picture was presented to RaMell Ross’ “Nickel Boys,” with Sean Baker’s “Anora” and Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine As Light” serving as runners-up. Kapadia also managed to score Best Director, with Ross and Baker serving as runners-up in that category, as well as Best Foreign-Language Film.
Another highlight from this year’s crop of awards recipients is Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s win for Best Actress, making her one of five actresses to earn the critics association trifecta, the others being Imelda Staunton (“Vera Drake”), Sally Hawkins (“Happy-Go-Lucky”), Cate Blanchett (“Tar” and “Blue Jasmine”), and...

Nsfc was founded in 1966 and is comprised of over 60 critics hailing from outlets nationally. These journalists mark their annual voting selections for categories such as best picture, director, actor, actress, supporting actor and actress, screenplay and cinematography.
Voting is processed through a weighted ballot system which has critics vote for their top 3 picks. The nominee that garners the most points and is listed on the most ballots wins. The voting process only proceeds to a second round if necessary and voting continues for as long as required until a nominee receives the majority of votes.

“Nickel Boys,” the Colson Whitehead adaptation from director RaMell Ross, won best film from the prestigious National Society of Film Critics on Saturday. Jomo Fray’s cinematography was also honored by the organization.

With 2024 over, the year was chock-full of financially successful blockbusters and critically acclaimed dramas that are destined to take over the award season. Those movies defined what 2024 was and will be remembered long after. However, when most people were paying attention to the sure-fire hits, several films didn't get the appreciation they deserved.
There are a few loyal people who spread the word about these specific movies, but it wasn't enough to get them out of the status of being overlooked. Despite being generally well-received, these 2024 films couldn't reach a wide enough audience and didn't make the grandest splash at the box office or on streaming. From Netflix originals like Rebel Ridge and His Three Daughters to well-cast dramas like The Bikeriders and Saturday Night, there were plenty of 2024 movies that people largely missed out on.

As we enter 2025, the future of the box office looks as uncertain as ever, but if there's one thing we know for sure it's that we're all destined to scroll the Netflix interface for years to come. In recent weeks, amid the usual festive fare, the streamer offered up its usual cavalcade of kind of okay "content" that exited our collective cortex as quickly as it entered. Netflixers sent Megan Fox's sci-fi thriller "Subservience" to the top of the streamer's charts over the festive period, while the Keira Knightley-led spy thriller series "Black Doves" similarly triumphed in the Netflix rankings.
But Netflix's 2024 wasn't entirely defined by slickly-produced yet somehow instantly forgettable films and TV shows. Amid the 10 best Netflix movies of 2024, we had some real standouts, including what proved to be a breakout turn for Aaron Pierre in the excellent "Rebel Ridge" and the affecting family drama of "His Three Daughters.

Chicago – It’s New Year’s Eve, so what better day for a look-back to the 10 Best Films of 2024, a soul search exercise in experiences. How do you break down a hundred and a half films in a year to a 10 in the end? Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, Wbgr-fm and Wssr-fm gives it his best shot.
If there was one trend that defined 2024, in my observation, was the perhaps beginning of the end of the superhero genre? The only huge hit was Deadpool & Wolverine ($640M), with Venom: The Last Dance in second ($132M) barely reaching its budget in domestic box office. Madame Web, Kraven The Hunter and Joker: Folie Á Deux were box office duds.
I format my 10 Best to reflect the on-air reviews I do weekly on Wbgr-fm and Wssr-fm and occasional appearances on Missourinet.com. Each of the 10 Best will be in the on-air or audio format for your listening pleasure.

Naysayers be damned. The mainstream film industry may be on its last legs but the cinematic art form is alive and well. I enjoyed so many films this year I actually have two top-ten lists that are largely interchangeable. If you want to hear my other ten, feel free to check out the end of year review on my podcast The Cinematologists. Following on from last year’s approach, here are my ten for Dn. All ten were released in UK cinemas (or debuted on streaming) in 2024 and are listed here alphabetically.
Honourable mentions: The Delinquents, Sky Peals, The Holdovers, The Settlers, Sometimes I Think About Dying
10. Adam Sandler: Love You | Josh Safdie
The last two Sandler specials for Netflix have been wonderful. I admire his commitment to being silly, and sentimental. In a world as messy as this, there needs to be places for silliness, and there are...

I think it’s been a great year for cinema. Maybe even better than last year. According to my Letterboxd I didn’t give any film that came out in 2023 the heralded five stars but this year I’ve given that score twice, and a lot of four and a halves to go with. Scores are, of course, arbitrary, but it’s interesting to look back and see how things have played out on a macro level. It’s been a great year for cinema visits too, with lots of screenings locally as well as a day trip to the Prince Charles Cinema in London to watch David Lynch’s Inland Empire. What a wonderful, baffling fever dream (nightmare?) of a film. Watching it on the big screen with a loyal, and slightly stoned, audience was one of those experiences that just got me hyped about cinema again. Will definitely...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
As the decade crosses its halfway point, I can already sense the hastily assembled lists soon appearing, attempting to provide definitive word on the best in cinema over the last five years. I’d rather heed the wisdom of the great J. Rosenbaum and give some distance, but in the spirit of annual year-end extravaganza, I’ll join the crowd in looking back at least the last twelve months of releases. A peculiar year in I saw almost half the films on my list upon their festival premieres in 2023––and furthermore, my top three picks haven’t shifted since January. The eleven preceding months thankfully brought no shortage of illuminating experiences as detailed in my top 15 picks, including a few of the most noteworthy studio offerings failing...

We are inching closer and closer to the end of the year, which means it is time for many "best of" lists. Every year, Netflix releases hundreds of movies, which is both good and bad because some of the best ones can get lost in the shuffle. As someone who watches as much as he can yearly, I share my favorite Netflix original movies of 2024.
We had the return of an iconic comedy legend, Axel Foley, Glenn Powell wowed us with multiple disguises, and Pablo Larraín finished his biopic trilogy. I always credit Netflix for its wide range of diverse films.
You could be laughing one minute, crying the next, and doing a deep dive into a serial killer the next. This year proved to be very fruitful for Netflix and its original films.

The holidays are officially in full swing and that means a lot of folks are heading into some well-earned time off, and probably some long-overdue catchup on the biggest movies of the year. As we all know in 2024, trying to find out what’s streaming where is half the battle when you’re wondering what to watch.
Whether you’re looking for major box office hits like “Beetlejuice Beeltejuice” and “Inside Out 2” or lesser-known gems like “Thelma” and “The Bikeriders,” there are a ton of 2024 movies that you can watch on streaming over the holiday. Want to caught up with some awards contenders? “Conclave,” “Challengers” and “Emilia Perez” are all streaming now too, among others. Rather catch up on horror? “The Substance” is on Mubi and, naturally, Shudder has you covered with “Oddity,” “In a Violent Nature” and more.
Whatever you’re looking for, here are all the 2024 movies you can stream right now.

The end-of-year cascade of lists, ballots, scorecards, and rankings can mean a lot of the same: It’s all “Anora” this, “Conclave” that. While IndieWire’s own list of the best films of 2024 was crowned by RaMell Ross’s emotional, searching story of Black kids in Jim Crow South, “Nickel Boys,” there are still plenty of indies that didn’t get enough love this year even beyond our top 25.
Still, there’s some overlap in titles across IndieWire’s list of the Best Overlooked Indies of 2024. We picked 27 of them for brevity’s sake, meaning more than a few gems likely got left off, but here’s a good sampling of many of the indies snubbed by critics groups or more mainstream-leaning awards bodies so far this year.

Movies continued their difficult post-pandemic recovery in 2024. Hindering that process was a pipeline drastically thinned by the previous year’s protracted writers’ and actors’ strikes; the summer release slate was especially anemic. The outlook got a boost from the bumper crop of early-winter releases led by Wicked, Moana 2 and Gladiator II, but box office nonetheless seems headed for an annual tally well short of 2023 revenues.
Studio animation came back with guns blazing — Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4 and Moana 2 all appear certain to land in the top 5. Among critics’ darlings, Flow and The Wild Robot both looked to the animal kingdom to find hope for a planet falling apart, while the latter also provided a comforting balm for A.I. anxiety. And the artisanal magic of stop-motion animation made a comeback in Memoir of a Snail and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.
