I was a fool! I checked out the Director thinking his involvement with 'Designated Survivor' would mean a definite bit of entertainment on a lazy afternoon! How wrong was I? This is your typical low budget war movie which only those who were involved in its production would sit down and watch. My clue came in the first few minutes when - spoiler alert- a troop carrier with 2 soldiers in immaculate uniforms were 'blown up' by what sounded like a small fire work. Next a hospital scene with no hospital staff and very poor dialogue. I'm generally tolerant of low budget movies but my patience ran out after 10 minutes! There are a ton of good war movies out there, watch those instead.
A solid movie by Writer Danny Crossman from a perspective I can't say I've seen in the many war movies I've watched over the years. Nobody seems to have covered the role of Canadians in World War II and their significance. I appreciate that. Not sure how they were able to do it on a "non-Hollywood" budget, but the set pieces were great with multiple artillery, vehicles, weapons and uniforms. It all added to the authenticity of the movie. The movie sets the hook early with the inevitable suffering that occurs in a war setting. I rooted for the protagonists and without spoiling the ending, it was a satisfying end to the movie. Overall, you can tell the production crew really cared about telling a good story. Cheers.
The Liberation Men is a good movie with a lot of drama and suspense in it. It is a period movie that is worth seeing. It takes place in an historical wartime period. However, what is most surprising is that it is not a historical romantic movie without compromising it's creativity and originality. The movie got stronger as the movie went along, pulling you in. The women in the film are important characters but it is the men who are the central to the film's story. Films transporting audiences back through time have captivated movie audiences over the years and this film is no exception. Bravo!
The Liberation Men feels like an accurate depiction of a WWII story told with an empathetic lens. It is a story of heroism from Canadian soldiers and a film to be added to your lit, especially if you are a fan of war films from that era.
Told in several different languages it is a good idea to have the subtitles turned on unless you have some familiarity with German and Dutch.
This film reminds us of the difficult and complexities experiences during these times and the fear and power that the Nazi's instilled. A well told story about the unsung heroes that is worth a watch.
Makes me wonder if Danny Grossman, the writer, served in the military as the love and respect for the soldier's experience is there.

What a treat to see a war film on a budget look and feel much more than it should. Well made and directed. These are the type of indie film that need more attention. Covering subject matter during the war with interesting characters is successful in this drama. I was really surprised by the production value of this film. It was well researched and the uniforms weapons and vehicles was nice to see. Locations were authentic and gave a haunting feel to the time period as we know what went on during theses times. Over all a great film to watch and especially if your a history buff or just someone who likes period films.
