Lauren Holly, Cody Linley, Patrick Warburton, and Alyson Stoner in Hoovey (2015)
A Midwest farming family gets tested at every level when 16 year-old Eric "Hoovey" Elliot, a promising high school basketball star, collapses on the court and is diagnosed with a life threatening brain tumor that must be removed immediately. Hoovey survives the high risk, 8-hour procedure - but his fight is only just beginning.

With the help of parents Jeff and Ruth, Hoovey must learn to walk again, to read again, to even speak and see straight again. But his biggest challenge is to fight off the hopelessness and despair that accompany the dashed dreams of ever playing ball again - even a minor blow to the head could prove fatal. At the same time, unpaid medical bills mount and tensions rise as Jeff and Ruth swim in crippling debt, leaving the future of the family home and farm uncertain.

It seems there is no one for the Elliots to turn to - no one but themselves and their God.

And it is this faith that the family relies on when, despite the danger, they band together and join Hoovey in his fight to get back onto the court again. Turns out, some dreams are just too big to die.

Decent faith-based movie based on a true story

I liked it. Is it a great movie? No. Some heavy handed music overlays were more distracting than evocative and one could see the ending coming... But it was heartfelt and true.

Yes, it is a faith based movie, so if that alone will rub you the wrong way, give it a pass. (I felt some reviewers were unnecessarily harsh based on the faith aspect vs the content itself.) But if you are a person of faith or open to looking to a power greater than you when the odds are against you (both father and son are filled with self-doubt), I think you will like it.

"It is not what happens to you, it is what you do with it" Eric Elliot.

    It's Actually Good

The fact this movie (at this time) is rated less than 6 is misleading. There's only about 1,000 reviews and you can see why they're low by reading the ones who gave it a 1. If you want to see why there's some religion in the movie (and it's not an overwhelming amount of religion like the 1s would have you believe), you can watch the trailer and see why, for a true story, they'd rely on religion.

With that being said, the movie itself I thought was good. It's inspirational and for a book turned movie I thought they did a great job. I've not read the book, but usually when they turn them into movies you feel like something is missing or it goes too fast in parts where it shouldn't. I never got that feeling. Is it a lot like other inspirational movies? Sure. Can it be a little corney at times? Sometimes but not over the top. But overall it was a good movie and if it happened to be on TV when I walked in a room I'd probably sit and watch it again for a bit.

    Very inspirational

Whether you are religious or not this is a great inspirational movie of someone overcoming tragic circumstances. The movie should inspire people that are going through tough times themselves that there is hope and that good things can happen from tragedy. The movie is a true story that shows if you never give up and fight for your dreams you can overcome some of the worst situations .Life will always have some difficult times but the important thing is that you never give up and fight through them . It will make a better and stronger person in the end . Each trial was a challenge and faced as an opportunity to rise up and meet .

Great Movie that Inspires Right Thinking

Though some of the sports scenes are not as convincing, the story line, interactions and dialog are. This based-on-a-true-story movie takes you on quite a journey that is safe and entertaining for the whole family. It will also challenge you to think more carefully about your life and inspire you to look for, and trust, how providence is working out the direst of circumstances in your, and your family's, life. This movie may not be 100% 'Hollywood quality', but it is very close. The acting, cinematography and screenplay is excellent. Only some of the sports scenes could have used a bit more authenticity, but it is easily overlooked because of the excellence throughout the rest of the movie. Well worth the watch and the purchase!!

    Wonderful, True Story!

It's amazing what God can do! It's an uplifting movie that proves no matter what we face in life we can make it through because God is with us every step of the way.
