Asian sales and production firm Distribution Workshop is using the Busan International Film Festival’s market to re-launch ambitious “Sons of the Neon Night,” a film it first became attached to in 2015. Only this time the Juno Mak-directed project is now in post-production, has a stellar cast and has expanded to become the highest-budget movie ever hatched in Hong Kong.
“Sons of the Neon Night” is pitched as a high-octane yet highly-stylized, police-crime-action-thriller set in a deconstructed and reimagined Hong Kong. It boasts an A-list cast headed by Takeshi Kaneshiro (“House of Flying Daggers”), Tony Leung Ka-fai (“Cold War”), Sean Lau Ching-wan (“Life Without Principle”), Louis Koo (“Warriors of Future”) and Ritchie Jen (“Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In”).
The original music score was composed by Nate Connelly, with the title theme by the late Sakamoto Ryuichi (“The Last Emperor”).

The Hives have returned with their sixth studio album, The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons. Stream the record below.
Spanning 12 tracks and packing-in an impressive amount of Hives-esque angst, antics, and rock ‘n’ roll prowess, the album proves that just because the popularity of rock has waned in recent years doesn’t mean that one of the genre’s greatest purveyors has lost their touch. In fact, The Hives think there might even be a correlation: “I’m just saying that The Hives don’t release a record for 10 years, [and] rock becomes completely unpopular,” frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist told The New York Times. “Coincidence? We think not.”
Thankfully, The Hives weren’t alone in this endeavor. The making of The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons began like how all of their albums begin: with input from their fictional “mentor and songwriter,” Randy Fitzsimmons. This time, though, Fitzsimmons seems to have helped them from beyond the grave.

Hong Kong singer / actor / director / prodcer Juno Mak is – allegedly – about to release (after 5 years of writing and 1 year shooting) his sophomore directorial work, “Sons of a Neon Night” after the excellent homage to Hong Kong Jiangshi movies, “Rigor Mortis” of 2013. Mak is well known for his musical career and for acting in movies like “Dream Home” (2010) by Pang Ho-cheung and as the troubled protagonist (and writer) of “Revenge: A Love Story” (2010) by Wong Ching-Po.
The crime thriller “Sons of the Neon Night” – also written and produced by Juno Mak – is set for release in 2020. However, after revealing – at a press conference in 2017 – an intriguing two-minute behind-the-scene featurette, a batch of beautiful photo-stills and a teaser poster, we have lost tracks.
In 2018 production for the film had officially wrapped and the director had announced a 2019 release while promoting it at the Hong Kong Filmart 2018. Apparently, several problems encountered in the...

With very few Hong Kong or mainland Chinese sellers making the journey to this year’s European Film Market in Berlin, Filmart offers a chance for buyers to catch up with the Chinese-language titles that will be rolled out in the region for the rest of the year.
After serving up the biggest film of the Chinese New Year holiday — Kung Fu Yoga, starring Jackie Chan and directed by Stanley Tong — China’s Sparkle Roll Media has launched a Hong Kong-based sales arm that is selling Ding Sheng’s reboot of the A Better Tomorrow series.

If it's two things we love, it's Joss Whedon and pop culture-inspired artwork. So the fact that Los Angeles' Gallery 1988, home to some of the very best pop culture artwork on the planet, is hosting a show devoted entirely to the creator of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly," "Dollhouse," "Cabin in the Woods" and "The Avengers" (amongst many others) and well, it's almost too good.
The show runs from tonight until September 27th, and you can pick up artwork from the show online starting midday tomorrow. If you're in La and don't have any plans, the opening ceremony, going on from 7 to 10 tonight, is undoubtedly worth your time. Plus you get first dibs on buying stuff, which is always very cool. The Marin County Sheriff's Office held a press conference today in San Rafael, California announcing the official details about the suicide of beloved comedian and actor Robin Williams.

Williams' body was found by his personal assistant and was already cold to the touch. Rigor mortis had already set in. The 911 call from the assistant came in at 11:55am.
The actor was last seen alive late Sunday evening when his wife retired for the night. It was unknown when the actor went to his bedroom, but his wife left the house at 10:30am yesterday morning believing he was still asleep.

Ever since Warm Bodies discovered the mainstream appeal of romance in a time of zombies, I’d been wondering how long it would take for other filmmakers to cash in on the rotting flesh of young love. Trying to love a zombie isn’t exactly the easiest feat, no matter how beautiful those cold, dead eyes look, but at least there’s hope throughout Warm Bodies, showing a zombie transforming back to his mortal form.
Jeff Baena’s Life After Beth is a role-reversal horror dramedy not about finding love, but instead losing love, finding it once again as a shambling zombie, and then somehow letting go. Beth Slocum inexplicably (Aubrey Plaza) comes back from the grave looking human enough, minus some heavy bags under her eyes and the snake bite that originally caused her death, and her grieving boyfriend Zach (Dane DeHaan) couldn’t be happier. The Raid 2: Berandal I was not a fan of The Raid, but I am expecting a Blu-ray review copy of The Raid 2 any day now as I'm willing to check out the sequel and see if there were any improvements. Maybe this film will be more than an action montage and have some sort of narrative weight to it.
Nymphomaniac Volume I & II I've already posted my review of both volumes of Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac and suffice to say, I wasn't entirely impressed. Some seem to think it's because the so-called comedy went over my head. Perhaps, but if what we're talking about here is blatant comedy then I'm just not interested.
Bad Words Still haven't seen it, but the box art says it's a "tour de force" and "great", and box art never lies.

This week’s Blu-ray and DVD releases are an eclectic bunch, to say the least. Not only is Steve Miner’s criminally overlooked horror/comedy creature feature Lake Placid swimming its way onto Blu-ray, but Severin Films is also releasing a trio of controversial cult classics- Bloody Moon, The Baby and Bloody Birthday-all in high definition for the first time ever.
The Time Machine is also getting a Blu-ray release this week, along with Gareth Evans’ stunning action masterpiece The Raid 2 and a handful of indie horror films, including the wickedly entertaining horror musical Stage Fright starring Minnie Driver and Meat Loaf. Overall, it’s a good week to be a genre fan with oddball tastes because there’s a whole lot of wonderfully weird stuff arriving this Tuesday.

Vampire. Envision the creature. Do you picture the classic cloaked version? Or the frilly shirt-wearing kind? Or the feral? Or god forbid the sparkly ones? Vampires come in all shapes and sizes, and with Rigor Mortis coming to Blu-ray and DVD on July 8th, we decided to take a look at some of our favorites.
Ever since Bram Stoker brought us Dracula, filmmakers and storytellers have been modifying vamps and making them into all sorts of unique beasties. Some are pretty and some are really, really ugly… but they all drink blood and use humans like we use cattle.
Rigor Mortis features a very unique type of vampire, and it's always fun to see a creature that expands the legend.
So let's take a look at some of the coolest types of vampires that have come into our lives.
For starters, we'll begin with the classic vampire. And what do we mean by "classic" vampire?...

Good day, deviliers of all things eggy. Has everybody run out to watch Deliver Us From Evil yet? Not that reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, even from horror fans - but any horror given the chance to go big on Fourth of July weekend deserves some attention. I guess you could go and watch Tammy with a Scary Sounds of Halloween tape playing through your headphones, but that doesn.t seem as effective. On the small news tip, Juno Mak.s acclaimed haunted house action flick Rigor Mortis has been tapped for an almost immediate July 8th release on Blu-ray, DVD and VOD, from Well Go USA Entertainment. According to Box Office Mojo, Leigh Whannell.s Insidious: Chapter 3 has pushed its release date back from April 3, 2015 to May 29, 2015. A feast for genre fans, the film follows a depressed actor (Chin Siu-ho) who moves into an even more depressing apartment complex and attempts suicide, only to be rescued by Uncle Yau (Anthony Chan). *full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by Well Go USA. Director: Juno Mak. Producers: Takashi Shimizu and Juno Mak. Cast: Chin Siu-ho, Nina Paw Hee-ching, Anthony Chan, Kara Wai, Richard Ng and Chung Fat. Rigor Mortis is a Chinese film from Hong Kong. The film was developed by filmmaker Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge) and inexperienced director Juno Mak. A true visual marvel, Rigor Mortis offers lots of horror elements. Though, the film's story is fractured by a number of sideplots. Still, Rigor Mortis offers lots of action in its short runtime. This film viewer enjoyed the many practical effects and Mak's experimentation with the camera. The story begins with a reluctant hero. Siu-ho (Siu-ho Chin) is a former actor and he has been kicked out of his home, by his wife. He chooses suicide as an escape from his pain, but a neighbour intervenes. Tung (Richard Ng...

Today marks the start of the New York Asian Film Festival, which runs from June 27 to July 14, 2014. Every year it's one of the biggest showcases of Asian cinema anywhere in the United States, and is often one of the only ways people in the U.S. will even be able to see many of these movies on the big screen. That's a bit of a bummer if you're nowhere near New York City, but if you are, this year's lineup of 60 feature films is drool inducing and includes (but is hardly limited to): The Snow White Murder Case The Terror Live Overheard 3 Rigor Mortis Public Enemy Firestorm 3D Cold Eyes That's just a taste of what's in store (there is also a ton of special events and guests). And if you do happen to be in Nycc, the organizers of the Nyaff have...

A mainstay in the NYC cinephile scene for thirteen yeas, the New York Asian Film Festival could be called an institution, but can something that is often so much fun as Nyaff be called as such? In short, yes. Despite the fact that we here at Twitch get to review a lot of their films before they hit western shores, it's hard to argue that Nyaff is anything less than the premiere North American destination for contemporary Asian cinema and rare offerings from the past. While some audiences crave the more boisterous genre offerings the festival is often celebrated for, there's always a little bit of everything, for all kinds of tastes. From the twisted horror of Rigor Mortis to the heartwarming drama of The...

Rigor Mortis
Written by Lai-yin Leung and Philip Yung
Directed by Juno Mak
Hong Kong, 2013
Asian horror cinema is one of the most original and frightening forms of storytelling around. Films like Ringu and Ju-on: The Grudge are solid proof that the far east offers exciting new platforms for supernatural creatures (like ghosts) to scare and entice. A slightly interesting but overall mediocre new film, Rigor Mortis continues this trend, but, sadly, the results are somewhat disappointing. This horror-action hybrid from Hong Kong is actually a tribute to the 1985 horror-comedy Mr. Vampire, and contains some of the same actors from that film.
Taking place in an apartment housing complex in Hong Kong, Rigor Mortis focuses on washed-up actor Chin Siu Ho, played, appropriately enough, by Chin Siu-Ho. With his family out of the picture and his career in the toilet, Chin decides to end it all by hanging himself. When he attempts to do this,...

Horror genres tend to get sillier over time as we get more comfortable with our fears. Frankenstein eventually meets Abbot and Costello. Night of the Living Dead shambles inexorably to Dead Alive and Shawn of the Dead.
With Rigor Mortis, Juno Mak tries to put that engine in reverse, attempting to breathe grim life into the geung si (Chinese hopping vampire) genre, traditionally spooky slapstick. The resulting creep show has some frantic action scenes, but never quite enough spring in its step.
A despondent actor — '80s geung-si star Chin Siu-ho, playing a version of himself — moves into a relentlessly gray Hong Kong apartment building to end it all. (The bleak setting emphasizes Ho's mood, but also presumably makes it easier on t...

We love our vampires. There is no denying that. And whether they be the frilly shirt wearing kind or the pointy toothed Alaskan invaders, whatever form they come in, we eat them right up (pun definitely intended). In celebration of the VOD and limited theatrical release of the Hong Kong vampire flick Rigor Mortis, we bring you the Top 5 Foreign Vampire Films.
A film by Juno Mak, Rigor Mortis promises to be one insane ride of vampirism. Heavily laden with F/X and action, the film is a sort of homage to the Chinese vampire movies of the '80s.
Definitely a unique experience, Rigor Mortis looks to make its mark as a memorable foreign vampire film itself.
But back to the topic at hand. We have a couple of honorable mentions to start off with, including (and we're speculating on this first one, but we know it's going to...

The last movie I saw from the mind of Juno Mak, 2010’s “Revenge: A Love Story,” is not an easy movie to watch, even for the most seasoned shock cinema veterans. Full of brutal sexual violence, torture, mutilation, and some ways to deal with a pregnancy that most people would never think of, it can be a rough go. But it’s also a fantastic feat of storytelling, full of misdirection and moves that totally change your perspective on the film. Mak wrote and stars in “Revenge,” and he steps behind the camera to direct the vampire horror thriller “Rigor Mortis,” offering up a different kind of darkness. Though “Rigor Mortis” is definitely a movie designed to make you uncomfortable, it largely eschews the straight up violence and depravity—don’t worry, there is still a bunch—for spooky atmosphere, a creepy story of broken people, and by crushing your eardrums.

Asian horror cinema is quite a different animal. There is always subtext layered deep within that deals with the consequences of our actions, therefore, even the simplest horror stories seem deeper and more developed. That is the case with Juno Mak’s directorial debut, Rigor Mortis, a film that is layered in so much meaning, that every frame is alive. The film opens with a man reflecting on his life, of all things, as an actor. This would explain away the ruin around him as being part of a huge set. Operatic, sure, but it could be a man on a stage performing for the world. Life is ridiculous, he says, before the film flashes back to tell us its story.
