The Little Horsewhip is a touching and uplifting film directed by Dong Xinwen and Xiapukati Mulati, set in the stunning Altay Prefecture of Xinjiang. Released in 2023, it beautifully showcases the "Equestrian into Campus" and "Skiing on Campus" initiatives in the area. However, the story follows a pretty predictable path, centering on Angsar, a young Kazakh boy who has a strong love for horse riding. His dream is straightforward yet meaningful: to master the skill of horsemanship. The film takes us through his journey, filled with grit, obstacles, and, in the end, success.
One of the highlights of this film is its gorgeous cinematography. The sweeping landscapes of Xinjiang are shown off in all their beauty, making for a visual feast. On the flip side, the CGI leaves a lot to be desired, but thankfully, it's not overly used.
The performances, especially from the young actor playing Angsar, are impressive. The film's impact is further highlighted by its accolades on the international stage. Winning the Best Film Award from the UNESCO International Children's Film Centre at the 28th International Children's and Youth Film Festival in Chemnitz, Germany, really shows its broad appeal and storytelling strength. Plus, its nominations for Best Children's Film and Best Music at the 36th China Film Golden Rooster Awards speak volumes about its artistic and technical quality.
