This is an utterly unique take on the royals - we are afforded an unprecedented image of Charles constructed from the confessions and criticisms of those closest to him - his classmates, girlfriends, confidantes - where previous media has been based simply on the theories of outsiders who knew none of the inner workings of the palace. This film takes a refreshingly equivocal, balanced view of Charles; it's concerned with rooting out hidden details - sometimes sordid, sometimes sympathetic - in the king's early life rather than praising or criticizing the monarchy as a concept. I'm against the monarchy morally and politically, but it's one to watch whatever your view - an outstanding piece of television journalism.
I feel like this tries to paints the monarch in a positive light, at the expense of Princess Diana and Prince Harry.
Also not sure the timing is right in a time of great distress for Brits. The story seems embellished at parts. I would have gladly watched something more objective, especially considering Diana's tragic demise. It also focuses a lot on his ex gfs pre-Diana which isn't very compelling or interesting.
I think nothing really makes you want to like the character that much, they are shown as a poor parent, a poor husband and hyper focused on his job, all while cheating.
I just hope it won't become a trend for more of these documentaries to come out.

A couple of the reviews here seem to have missed the point: 'Why are we talking about Royalty?' they ask. - Well it's because we live in a world where these people continue to hold real sway. Here we are, in a country which threw out the monarchy 240 years ago, and we can't get enough of them. (Just look at the hype over Harry and Meghan.)
I'm a proud American not because we don't have a monarch and not because we obsess over other people's monarchs either. I'm proud because we are a country which asks questions: 'What is good and what is bad about monarchy?'; 'Is monarchy really so different from the rigged nepotism which continues to widen the wealth gap here at home?'. To answer these and countless more questions we need good journalism like this. Sure, you can watch this movie simply because you love royals, but can also watch it with a detached and critical eye. Either way it does an important job. It's one more great documentary out of the UK which show us our world and inform us so that we can answer these questions for ourselves.
Amazing tv! So cute to see Charles when he was young! Love love love the interviews with his girlfriends. How did they persuade them to talk in front of the cameras for the first time??!! Really showed a new side to Charles and his family. It's kind of nice timing too when its the coronation and we just want to enjoy it and feel good for a bit. Made me so sad what happened with the Royal Family recently and I love seeing that their real people and they have their problems and there is good and bad in everyone. Shows like this make you feel like you know them a bit better and I know that's not real but thats ok because its all about the fantasy and sometimes thats what we need!!!
WOW.
When I woke up this morning, I thought it would be a regular day.
But I could not have guessed (not even in my wildest dreams) how much my day would change.
When I clicked play and the film started playing, I knew from that moment that it would go down in history.
I cannot express how much I love it. And the filmmaker has obviously reached new heights of genius.
It is so hard these days to find a film that doesn't ramble on for over two hours. But this, may I add, provides the whole story in under two MINUTES!
That is a captivating story if ever I've seen one.
I'm a 72-year-old woman, but never in my old age have I watched a film which reminds me so much what it feels like to be young again.
My only critique is that I wasn't completely sure who the film was about so, on the off chance that the filmmaker reads this, I would have liked a bit more context about the identity of the main character.
