Zombies have come a long way since George A. Romero, who is widely considered the "godfather of the genre," thrilled and terrified audiences with his mindless, staggering walking undead who were hungry for human brains. The ever-evolving zombie has changed in the 55 years since his seminal 1968 movie Night of the Living Dead. Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End is the latest film to take advantage of the changes made by notable 21st-century offerings like television's The Walking Dead, Danny Boyle's revolutionary 28 Days Later, and David Fincher's more recent World War Z starring Brad Pitt, and South Korea's marvelous entry Train to Busan.

Remember that sudden explosion of zombie media that was sparked by the success of AMC’s The Walking Dead back in 2010? While the popular opinion these days is that the oversaturation of zombie stories ended up taking all the bite out of the genre, I actually think that this period offered up a bunch of truly interesting (and often deliciously meta) takes on a familiar premise – you just had to know how to find them among the cheap cash-grabs and knock-offs.
One such gem happened to be Manel Loureiro’s Apocalypse Z, a Spanish blog about a crafty everyman protagonist attempting to survive a more realistic take on the zombie apocalypse. Over time, the blog became so popular that Loureiro ended up publishing the ensuing saga as a trilogy of novels following Francisco and his cat throughout their journey across a zombie-infected Europe.

Chris Pine's directorial debut, which he also stars in, has become a streaming success despite its dismal 22% Rotten Tomatoes score. Pine is perhaps best known for his franchise roles, starting with Captain Kirk in the Star Trek reboot movies, which include 2009's Star Trek, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness, and 2016's Star Trek Beyond. From there, he also starred as Steve Trevor in the Dceu movies, 2017's Wonder Woman and its 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984.
Outside of franchise fare, Pine first rose to prominence for his roles in romantic comedies, including The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004 and Just My Luck in 2006. From there, he was cast in Star Trek, but continued to appear in other possible franchise-starters, playing Cinderella's Prince in Disney's Into the Woods and Jack Ryan in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. A 24-year-old Ridley Scott movie has become a modern streaming hit. At the age of 86, Scott continues to work regularly in Hollywood as a director and producer. He is responsible for some truly iconic films over the course of his 60-year career spanning a variety of genres. He's worked extensively in science-fiction with Blade Runner and multiple installments in the Alien franchise, but he has also returned time and time again to the historical epic, which he is set to return to once more with the upcoming Gladiator II.
Last year, Scott released the divisive Napoleon, about the titular French emperor, a sprawling film with a number of standout battle sequences. Prior to that, Scott went even further back in time with The Last Duel (2021), which earned generally positive reviews but was a box office disappointment. Other notable historical epics he directed include Robin Hood (2010) and Kingdom of Heaven (2005), the...

Aubrey Plaza's new dramedy with a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score tops a movies streaming chart. Starting her career in improv and sketch comedy, Plaza rose to prominence on Parks and Recreation as the sarcastic and deadpan April Ludgate, establishing her distinct comedic style. On television, Plaza has also showcased her range as a strait-laced lawyer in The White Lotus season 2, earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and starred in the Marvel miniseries Agatha All Along.
In film, Plaza started with a supporting role in Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and graduated on to leading roles in independent films, such as the Sundance hit Safety Not Guaranteed. Shooting to the top of Prime Video's most-watched list following its Halloween debut, Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End is an effective Spanish zombie movie with plenty more story to tell. The popular horror movie faithfully adapts Manel Laureiro's 2007 novel, Apocalipsis Z: El Principio Del Fin, which follows Manel (Francisco Ortiz), a lawyer and solar power entrepreneur, as he tries to reunite with his family during a pandemic that has turned innocent people into flesh-starved zombies.
Considering Apocalypse Z's instant success and popular viewership, a cinematic sequel is more than warranted. Fortunately, Loureiro has already penned a pair of follow-up tales, making for an ideal Spanish zombie trilogy that Prime Video should pursue. For...

In 2024, “Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End” will become a thrilling Spanish zombie movie that people all over the world can’t stop watching. The movie, directed by Carles Torrens and based on Manel Loureiro’s famous book series, is a new take on the zombie genre, combining personal drama with post-apocalyptic survival.
In Spain, the movie is about a sad widower named Manel (Francisco Ortiz) whose life changes drastically when the Tsj virus spreads, causing a pandemic like rabies that turns people into violent, infected animals. Manel is alone in a world that is quickly falling apart after losing his wife in a terrible car accident. His beloved cat, Lúculo, is the only thing that keeps him company.
The movie is more important than just another zombie story. It’s not just another end-of-the-world show; it’s a complex look at how strong people are, with surprising connections to the recent Covid-19 pandemic.

If you’ve just finished watching Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End on Amazon Prime Video, you’re probably looking for something else to keep that post-apocalyptic vibe going. Well, you’re in luck, because two movies that would make for a perfect follow-up are The Road (2009) and 28 Days Later (2002). Both of these films share the same intense survival themes and emotional depth that make Apocalypse Z so gripping, but each has its own unique spin on the end-of-the-world chaos.
Let’s start with The Road, a film that’s all about survival in a destroyed world. Directed by John Hillcoat and based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy, The Road takes place in a bleak, post-apocalyptic setting where a father and his young son try to stay alive in a world with nothing but ash and cold. It's always interesting to see what the streaming services churn up as part of their endless effort to keep subscribers from abandoning ship. While Netflix is the undisputed king of the streaming game, Amazon's Prime Video isn't all that far behind it in terms of subscriber numbers, and is seemingly just as adept at dredging up forgotten films only for them to experience a modest renaissance as a result. Take, for instance, the time a spooky family movie with a hilarious Clint Eastwood cameo hit the Prime Video charts for the Halloween season.
Of course, the other side of the streaming coin is new "content." All the big streamers produce their own films and TV shows as part of the aforementioned battle against subscriber churn, whether by producing them in-house or buying the rights to exclusively distribute finished projects. Now, Prime Video's latest exclusive has managed to become a global hit.

Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End has made a surprising appearance at the top of the Prime Video global chart. The Spanish zombie action thriller is making a big impact on the platform since dropping with dozens of other titles on November 1, currently now in second place behind Mark Wahlbergs sci-fi movie Infinite.
The film, which has the original title of Apocalipsis Z: El principio del fin, follows a mans attempts to get back to his family while trying to avoid people who have been infected by a global pandemic that turns them into crazed creatures. It only proves that the appeal of this genre is not dying down, and a movie like Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End is a burning example of that. Directed by Carles Torrens, the movie is adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by Spanish author Manel Loureiro. Since I haven’t read the novel, it is hard for me to say how faithful the movie remains to the book, but as a movie,...

Prime Video brings us the latest film by Carles Torrens, presenting a storyline that will undoubtedly resonate with everyone: a deadly virus spreads worldwide, turning its hosts into brainless creatures that attack anyone who crosses their path with ferocious violence. Yes, the zombie virus has arrived, and Spain is not an exception when it comes to producing zombie movies and their countless variations, especially in an era where, after Covid and lockdowns, we all dread the emergence of an even worse virus.
This is a golden opportunity for production companies, capitalizing on collective fear to create films that often feel like repetitions of their predecessors, both in...
