For actress, producer, and activist Jennifer Lawrence, when she saw what it was like for women living under Taliban authority, not getting involved wasn’t an option.
Lawrence had watched footage of the Taliban taking Kabul on the news and continued to follow the story as these forces continued to systematically dismantle protections and rights earned by women in Afghanistan over the last 20 years. Parallel to this, Lawrence was also bearing witness to the Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson that took away abortion access for many. Feeling connected to the plight Afghani women were facing, Lawrence and her producing partner Justine Ciarrocchi became involved in “Bread & Roses” through their Excellent Cadaver shingle, seeking out Sahra Mani to direct a documentary on the subject. Speaking in a recent interview with “CBS Mornings,” Lawrence shared that in making this choice, she faced a lot of push back, even from those closest to her.

Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai knows the viciousness of the Taliban all too well. When she was just 15, she was riding home on a bus from an exam she’d just taken when a Taliban gunmen entered seeking her out. Upon identifying herself, Yousafzai was shot through her eye, miraculously surviving thanks to emergency medical treatment. At the time, she’d come under fire from the Taliban present in her country for speaking against their actions towards female children, which included bombing girl’s schools so they’d no longer be able to attend. Now, Yousafzai is standing up to the organization once again by serving as an executive producer on the Apple TV+ documentary “Bread & Roses.” The film follows three women in the aftermath of Afghanistan’s Taliban insurgency, which took place in 2021. Holding power in the country for over three years, the Afghan Taliban have systematically stripped Afghan women of their rights,...

“Bread & Roses” begins with a celebration. A beautiful, intimate moment of new beginnings between a newly engaged couple and their families. Then, chaos strikes. In the middle of the night, their world is turned upside down as gunfire blasts, signaling the arrival of the Taliban. But as bullets fly, communities take to their balconies, shouting, “Down with the Taliban!,” signaling that — no matter the force brought upon them — they are free Afghanis and will remain so.
At that moment in time, and when this footage was first captured via personal digital camcorder, it was easy to act in defiance. For years, the Afghan people had been emboldened to do so by American forces and their presence within the country to push against Taliban insurgency. But when these troops pulled out after 20 years due to deals signed by now President-Elect Trump during his first term in office and carried out...

Alien: Romulus (Fede Alvarez)
It’s a dire, inhospitable environment, wherein corporate interests can give way to ghoulish monstrosities, and those just trying to navigate the chokehold of capitalism are doing their best to survive. In a way, Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus may be the most meta Alien film to date. No stranger to playing in others’ sandboxes, the Evil Dead helmer is, at first glance, an encouraging fit for the sci-fi horror franchise. Like the original, 2017’s Alien: Covenant––an underrated high point for these films––was at its peak when threading its headier notions with gleefully mean-spirited cynicism towards its human subjects. Alvarez has that same kind of nasty streak in him, and much of Romulus’ mandated fan service...

On Sunday night, per annual tradition, dozens of the current crop of top Oscar contenders — among them Maria lead actress Angelina Jolie, Gladiator II lead actor Paul Mescal, The Substance lead actress Demi Moore, The Brutalist lead actor Adrien Brody and Emilia Pérez supporting actress Selena Gomez — turned up at Ovation Hollywood for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Governors Awards ceremony, a black-tie dinner at which the organization presents special awards to industry legends.
The 15th Governors Awards’ highest profile honoree, composer-producer Quincy Jones, was celebrated posthumously, having died Nov. 3 at the age of 91. The most moving part of the evening came toward the end, when Jones’ honorary Oscar statuette was accepted by his daughter, actress-writer Rashida Jones, who, flanked by some of her siblings, tearfully paid tribute to her father and read the speech that he had planned to give at the ceremony.

Variety hosted its inaugural Doc Dreams NYC event on Nov. 12, featuring two panels with some of this award season’s top documentary feature contenders.
Speakers on the first panel included Carla Gutiérrez, director and editor of “Frida”; Irene Taylor, director and producer of “I Am: Celine Dion”; and R.J. Cutler, director and producer of “Elton John: Never Too Late.”
“I Am: Celine Dion” follows the Canadian singer’s musical journey and life-altering illness, the latter of which Taylor admitted she was not aware of prior to signing onto the project.
“I was so intrigued and encouraged by Celine herself when we had met and talked through the idea of a film,” Taylor said. “I think she was ready to spend the amount of time that a thorough biography with a living subject would offer.”

In 2021, as American troops withdrew from Afghanistan following 20 horrendous years at war, the very forces they fought against for those two decades were allowed to retake the country in a matter of months. Once the Taliban regained power, some of its first governing actions were to diminish the rights of women throughout Afghanistan, taking away their ability to be educated beyond sixth grade, to keep an occupation, and to even walk unaccompanied in public. Using only their cell phones and strong belief in self-determination, three women documented this cruel turn of events, both the personal struggles they faced being forced to give up jobs they’d spent their lives working towards and the resistance that grew as more women came out against these harsh laws.
This footage, which also includes occasional professional camera work, was eventually compiled by director Sahra Mani into the documentary “Bread & Roses,” which premiered at...

Apple Original Films has just dropped the trailer for Bread & Roses, a documentary feature — directed by Sahra Mani and produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Malala Yousafzai — about the plight of women in Afghanistan in the aftermath of the 2021 withdrawal from the country of the United States and fall of Kabul to the Taliban.
The film, which Lawrence and her Excellent Cadaver producing partner Justine Ciarrocchi initiated and hired Afghan filmmaker Mani (A Thousand Girls Like Me) to direct, follows three courageous Afghani women as they resist efforts to rob them of the autonomy they had acquired in recent decades.
Yousafzai, the Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize-winning champion of girls education, signed on as an executive producer to further highlight the film’s urgent message, joined by the Iranian composer Farhad Khosravi.

Shaping the world into a better place has been an active mission for Malala Yousafzai. As an activist for girls and human rights globally recognized since age 12, the Nobel Peace Prize winner — the youngest in history to receive the award — is no stranger to cameras in her own life. After her acclaimed 2015 documentary He Named Me Malala, inspired by her bestselling memoir I Am Malala, she produced the Oscar-nominated short doc Stranger at the Gate. At the 2024 Toronto Film Festival, Yousafzai premiered the Apple doc The Last of the Sea Women, from her production company Extracurricular, which premieres on Apple TV+ on Oct. 11. The film examines the world of South Korea’s all female haenyeo divers, whose centuries-long tradition of harvesting sea life in the waters off Jeju Island is endangered.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg spoke with the 27-year-old Yousafzai as part of the annual TIFF Industry Conference’ Visionaries conversation series.

Jennifer Lawrence is teaming up once again with A24 for a movie adaptation of “Why Don’t You Love Me?,” the darkly comedic 2023 graphic novel by Paul B. Rainey.
Robert Funke (“On Becoming a God in Central Florida”) is writing the screenplay, as the search for a director is underway. Lawrence is also a producer alongside Justine Ciarrocchi for Excellent Cadaver; Ari Aster, Lars Knudsen and Emily Hildner of Square Peg are also on board. Rainey executive produces.
“Why Don’t You Love Me?” follows a miserable couple, Claire and Mark, struggling through their marriage while “feeling like something is not quite right in their reality,” teases A24. The graphic novel has been described as a “pitch-black comedy about marriage, alcoholism, depression and mourning lost opportunities,” with surprising twists along the way.

After dabbling in comedy with “No Hard Feelings,” Jennifer Lawrence is tapping back into her funny bone with a new project with A24.
Lawrence will star in and produce “Why Don’t You Love Me?” which is based on a graphic novel by Paul B. Rainey published in 2023. The logline is merely that Lawrence will star as one half of a couple struggling through their marriage while feeling like something is not quite right in their reality.
But Rainey’s book is described as a science-fiction dark comedy about marriage, alcoholism, and depression in which the couple realizes this unhappy marriage is not the life they chose for themselves upon hearing news of an impending nuclear war on the radio. Lawrence’s character is a chain-smoking stalker and couch potato who spends the bulk of her time in a bathrobe, and both she and her husband wonder if this life...

The Oscar-winner and the Nobel laureate have teamed up to make Bread & Roses, a new film about the abuse of women in Afghanistan. In an emotional interview, they warn that the west ignores its message at their peril
“Strong women are not easy women,” says Jennifer Lawrence, “and a woman’s life is lonely. So much of our experience cannot be shared or understood by men, and our rights are in their hands. That’s why we need each other.”
The two other people on our video call nod in agreement. One is Malala Yousafzai, who, with Lawrence, has produced a new documentary about the oppression of Afghan women by the Taliban after US troops withdrew in 2021. The other is Sahra Mani, who directed it.

Hundreds of janitors and supporters marched from the Sony lot to Amazon Studios on Thursday to support striking Hollywood writers and protest alleged layoffs at major entertainment companies during the ongoing work stoppage.
According to the Seiu United Service Workers West union, which organized the demonstration with the Writers Guild of America, about 50 janitors have been laid off since the work stoppage began May 2, while others have seen their hours cut. The cuts have occurred across all major studios, according to the union, though it name-checks Paramount and Radford Studio Center in particular. (The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Radford Studio Center and Paramount for comment.)
“We don’t know how far it’s going to go. But we felt it was important to let them [the studios] know that we’re not going to be divided, that working people have to stand together,” Seiu-usww president David Huerta tells THR.

The 2023 Cannes Film Festival’s documentary slate featured probes into human rights abuses and profiles of unsung visionaries. At least one movie falls into both categories. This year marks the second time that the L’Œil d’or, first presented in 2015, has gone to two films. It’s also the first time in 19 years that nonfiction has competed for the Palme d’Or. Do you think any of the following titles 10 should be on our radar come Oscar season?

Documentary fans might be forgiven for nurturing a dream – that Cannes would follow the recent example of Venice and Berlin and award its top prize to a nonfiction film. Complete the documentary Triple Crown – the Golden Lion, the Golden Bear and the Palme d’or.
Alas, it wasn’t to be. On Saturday night, Cannes gave the gilded frond to a narrative-fiction film, as it generally does, Anatomy of a Fall. But perhaps the important thing is, the jury could have made the trifecta happen. Two documentaries appeared in main competition – Wang Bing’s Jeunesse (Youth) and Kaouther Ben Hania’s Four Daughters (Les Filles d’Olfa) – ending a nearly 20-year span in which no nonfiction film had been accorded the prestige of a competition slot. The 2023 Cannes Film Festival is jam-packed with buzzy world premieres, from Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City.” Todd Haynes is also back to unveil “May December,” featuring the A-list pairing of Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, while Disney is bringing Harrison Ford to the Croisette for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” New films from Pedro Almodovar, Jessica Hautner, Jonathan Glazer, Catherine Corsini, Hirokazu Kore-eda and more are also set to make their debuts at Cannes this year.

When the Taliban seized Kabul in 2021, the women of the city suffered. The Islamic Emirate immediately shut down schools and universities, made it illegal for women to be in public without a male chaperone and forced professionals to quit their jobs or close their businesses. Life for the women in the city shrank, as the militant group stripped away their rights and confined them to their homes.
In the harrowing documentary Bread and Roses, directed by Sahra Mani (A Thousand Girls Like Me), grainy cellphone footage shows the Taliban marching from the mountains and into Kabul. The mass of bodies floods the streets. Their faces — or what little is visible — reveal no emotions as they yell about God’s greatness. Gun shots in the distance announce their arrival and warn against refusal. This video, a roughly ten- to 15-second clip, is one of several chilling snapshots in Bread and Roses,...

A film festival as large as Cannes is always a study in contradictions, but the first six days of the 2023 edition feel particularly schizophrenic as the fest has veered between sentimental celebration and unsentimental artistry.
Both were on display in the festival’s biggest premiere so far, when Martin Scorsese’s monumental “Killers of the Flower Moon” had its debut in front of a delirious crowd at the Grand Theatre Lumiere on Saturday night. The invitation-only, black-tie audience was there to celebrate Scorsese, who first came to Cannes in 1976 with “Taxi Driver,” greeting him as a conquering hero and giving him a lengthy and emotional standing ovation that didn’t stop until he left the theater.
His film, meanwhile, was a hard-eyed and epic-length examination of the systematic murder of Native Americans from the Osage nation by whites looking to take the tribe’s oil money; the film’s biggest stars,...
