The songwriter, Britt, looked up actual names of places around the world of lonely places and cleverly incorporated them in the lyrics. Including the Island Of Lonely, city of Alone(Italy), Mount Despair. He also borrowed from other famous places written in song, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Heartbreak Hotel. Britt also included 3 very influential places in the lyrics, Washington DC (his hometown), Los Angeles (his new hometown) and New York (where he spent much time and where his mentor, Rich Gransasso, is from).
