Linda Lavin, a versatile actress on stage and screen known for her powerhouse voice, sharp comedic timing, and warm presence, died December 29, 2024. The cause was complications from lung cancer; she was 87.
Born on October 15, 1938, in Portland, Maine, Lavin’s interest in performing began at a young age. Her Broadway debut came in 1966, introducing the song “You’ve Got Possibilities” in the short-lived musical “It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s Superman.” But her early career is defined by her starring turn on the TV sitcom “Alice,” which ran from 1976 to 1985 and earned her an Emmy nomination.
Based on the Martin Scorsese film “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” the show starred Lavin as Alice, a widowed mother who moves to Phoenix to start a new life and work as a waitress. Lavin brought warmth, resilience, and humor to the character, earning critical praise and two Golden Globe awards.

Despite the fact that it was beloved by critics, adored by its fans and featured the greatest mustache in the history of television, Parks and Recreation was in constant jeopardy of being taken off of the air.
NBC treated the show so shabbily that during the sixth season, it was put on hiatus for months, and replaced with episodes of The Voice, an SNL clip show and a live version of The Sound of Music starring Carrie Underwood. As Vulture noted at the time, this was likely because NBC wanted to boost viewership of Sean Saves the World, a Sean Hayes-led sitcom that lasted for just 13 episodes and is remembered by precisely no one.
Well, it turns out that Parks and Rec was even more endangered than many of us thought.

Michael Schur's choice of TV subjects started out very small, growing over time until his latest show is about life, the universe, and everything. Schur started out writing for Greg Daniels on The Office, telling obscure stories about obscure people whose lives and dreams rarely grew beyond a paper company branch office in Scranton. Then he and Daniels created Parks and Recreation, which began almost as small, focusing on the staff of an Indiana town's parks department, before expanding outward until Leslie and Ben both had prominent national government jobs (one of them perhaps becoming President by the end). Then he and Dan Goor did Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which is about New York cops, focusing mainly on squadroom goofiness but occasionally showing the detectives taking down drug rings, mobsters, and even a serial killer. Now, though, comes the Schur-created The Good Place (it debuts Monday at 10 on NBC with back-to-back episodes,...

The actor has signed on to star in and produce Reagan, where he'll play U.S. President Ronald Reagan. The script by Mike Rosolio landed on The Black List last year as one of the best unproduced screenplays.

The script got so much buzz on The Black List that the company put on a live reading in Hollywood last month, with James Brolin reading the title role. In the script for Mike Rosolio's debut feature, selected for the influential Black List of unproduced screenplays late last year, an ambitious intern must convince President Reagan — grappling with dementia in his second term — that he's an actor playing the commander in chief in a movie. Now, as befits the irreverence of "Reagan," vocal Hillary Clinton surrogate Lena Dunham will give voice to Reagan speechwriter and conservative columnist Peggy Noonan at an upcoming live read, which amounts to some truly epic trolling. With production getting under way on Season 4 of Arrow, The CW series has just added yet another new cast member, bringing aboard Echo Kellum to play Curtis Holt, a.k.a. Mr. Terrific. The actor will have a recurring role on this new season of Arrow, first appearing in the second episode. It isn't known how many episodes he has signed on for in total, or if there is an option for him to become a series regular in Season 5.
Entertainment Weekly describes Curtis Holt as a "technological savant and inventor," who works for Palmer Industries under the supervision of Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards). You may recall that, in the Season 3 finale, both Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Felicity were seen driving away from Starling City together, supposedly starting a new life together. This is, to put it plainly, one hell of a time to be a comic book nerd. All my favorite characters(*) are making the leap from the page to either the big or small screen. Marvel can seemingly do no wrong with its film output, turning an obscure and downright goofy property like "Guardians of the Galaxy" into one of the year's biggest and most beloved hits. TV's most popular comedy ("Big Bang Theory") has a comic book shop as one of its primary sets, and a main character often seen in Flash and Green Lantern t-shirts. TV's most popular drama series ("The Walking Dead") is based on a long-running comic book, and there are currently five other comic-based shows airing on the broadcast networks (ABC's "Marvel's Agents of Shield," Fox's "Gotham," NBC's "Constantine" and the CW's "Arrow" and "The Flash"), with more coming fast. (The CW has "iZombie" set for mid-season,...

Last year, NBC hoped that Sean Hayes and Michael J. Fox, two stars of hit NBC sitcoms from yesteryear, could once again bring big ratings to the network. It didn't work and both Sean Saves the World and The Michael J. Fox Show were cancelled.
Undaunted, NBC execs made a deal earlier this year for a new multi-camera sitcom starring veteran Bill Cosby and executive produced by The Cosby Show's Tom Werner. The untitled comedy, expected to debut Fall 2015, would have seen Cosby playing the patriarch of a multi-generational family who shares his wit and wisdom.
As a result of the multiple rape accusations against Cosby in recent weeks, the network has now cancelled the project. In light of the news, it seems likely that the new show would have been a tough sell to audiences and advertisers alike.

Looks like that decision to add Sean Hayes didn't work out so well. CBS has decided to put the kibosh on more episodes of The Millers, a family sitcom that starred Will Arnett as a divorced news guy with a pair of nutty parents, played by Margo Martindale and Beau Bridges. The comedy has hobbled along on Mondays despite the addition of Hayes, the star of last year's failed sitcom Sean Saves the World. An original episode of the comedy will run Monday, but it seems unlikely the network will air what's left in the can.CBS may eventually fill...

It didn't take long for "The Millers" to go from a freshman "success" -- quotation marks necessary -- to a second year cancellation for CBS. CBS pulled a minor shocker in this week's Friday Evening News Dump, canceling "The Millers" after only four episodes aired in the second season. It's a slightly odd cancellation, though. "The Millers" is still airing this Monday (November 17) night's episode, with the appropriately grave title "Diggin' Up Bones." In addition, production will apparently continue for at least one more week before ending. Created by Greg Garcia and starring Emmy nominee Will Arnett and Emmy winners Margo Martindale and Beau Bridges, "The Millers" premiered to over 13 million viewers last October and was still drawing just under 10 million viewers by its May finale. Everybody knew that those numbers were basically propped up by its "Big Bang Theory" lead-in, but as a CBS Television Studios production, the comedy...

Some professionals can traverse the line between acting and directing with ease. One such individual is Matt Ross, who has excelled acting on TV shows like American Horror Story, Magic City, Silicon Valley and Big Love and sitting behind the camera on shorts (The Language of Love and Human Resources) and feature films (sexy Sundance drama 28 Hotel Rooms). Currently, Ross is taking on his biggest challenge to date, directing the drama Captain Fantastic. And now, we’ve learned that his cast, previously announced to be led by Viggo Mortensen, has added another huge talent, with word that Frank Langella has signed on.
No word yet on which part Langella will play, but Captain Fantastic centers on an idealistic father (Mortensen) who returns to society from living off the grid for a decade in the Pacific Northwest with his children. George MacKay, Annalise Basso, Samantha Isler, Aussie Nicholas Hamilton, Shree Crooks and Charlie Shotwell all co-star.

Greetings and Salutations. It's time for another year of Take Me To The Pilots entries, a format that I started way back in The Blogspot Days and I've been doing it regularly for HitFix since 2010. [I honestly don't know why I didn't do Take Me To The Pilots in 2009.] I've been using the same intro post since 2010 and that post featured a header image from Fox's "Lone Star," which famously lasted only two episodes despite being one of my favorite pilots of that fall. It exposes one of the main challenges of the pilot viewing process and the Take Me To The Pilots process, which is that at this stage in the game, it's less about what these things actually Are and more about the potential of what they Might Be. And that potential may never be realized, for good or for ill. Sometimes you fall in love with a pilot and America hates it and it's gone after two episodes. Sorry, "Lone Star.

Recently, NBC was the first of the big networks to reveal their Fall schedule line-up for the upcoming 2014-2015 season, and of course, their extremely long-running show, "Law And Order: Svu" drama, is on the schedule. The season 16 debut date will occur on Wednesday night, September 24th, 2014 at 8pm central time, so go ahead and jot that down on your TV calendars. It's going to retain its Wednesday night time slot, so that's always good, especially for the fans to keep up with it. In related news, NBC has ditched: Believe, Community, Crisis, Dracula, Growing Up Fisher, Ironside, The Michael J. Fox Show, Revolution, Sean Saves the World,or Welcome to the Family. So, don't look for any of those shows to return, although a petition to keep Revolution alive, is out there. I don't think it'll do any good, though.
