Warner Bros. Delays 'The Cat in the Hat' by Nine Months

Warner Bros Pictures Animation’s ‘Cat In The Hat’ Leaps To November 2026
Bill Hader in Le chat chapeauté (2026)
Warner Bros. Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation have decided to move The Cat in the Hat from Feb. 27, 2026 to Nov. 6 next year. Cat in the Hat is the first movie under the newly relaunched Warner Bros Pictures Animation under Bill Damaschke.

The Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja directed and written adaptation of the popular kids’ book is ready for February, the studio just prefers the pre-holiday corridor for global playability, Warners already having reserved the Nov. 6 date for an event film. November is home to such iconic family event franchises like Harry Potter, Home Alone, Frozen, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, Wreck-It Ralph, and Trolls.

Voices in the movie are Bill Hader, who plays the title role, as well as Xochitl Gomez, Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, Paula Pell, Tiago Martinez, Giancarlo Esposito, America Ferrera, Bowen Yang, and Tituss Burgess. Pic is produced by Daniela Mazzucato and Jared Stern. EPs are Susan Brandt and Hader.

What started as simple rhymes for early readers (The Cat in the Hat was written with only 236 unique words) developed into allegorical tales about real human issues told through talking animals and invented words. Apple TV+ Turning Fan-Favorite $205M Jude Law Rom-Com Into A TV Series
Image
Apple TV+ is developing a limited series remake of the Jude Law-starring rom-com classic The Holiday. Starring Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Law, and Jack Black, Nancy Meyers' iconic 2006 house swap movie has become a staple during the December holiday season. In the story, Winslet's English Iris and Diaz's American Amanda swap houses for the festive period, determined to escape their treacherous love lives.

As reported by Deadline, Apple TV+'s series will maintain the film's premise but introduce new characters. Casting is reportedly well underway and will determine whether the series gets greenlit. Krissie Ducker is set to write the adaptation, while Catastrophe's Rob Delaney will consult. Though Nancy Meyers directed, produced, and wrote the original version of The Holiday, she is not attached to Apple TV's project.

In the wake of the news, Meyers revealed that she was unaware the remake was in development. In an...

Bill Hader, 47, Begins a Whimsical New Adventure in First 'The Cat in the Hat' Trailer
Image
Oh, the places Bill Hader will go in next year's The Cat in the Hat movie. Over seven years ago, Warner Bros. Pictures snagged the rights to make a new feature adaptation of Dr. Seuss's iconic anthropomorphic feline. Now, the first trailer is finally here with the Barry star voicing the titular character in a whimsical new adventure that expands on the world of the storybook original. Filled with colorful and surreal visuals that capture the children's author's style, the footage teases a new challenge that will take him around the planet and threaten his signature striped headgear. The film will bring a little magic to theaters on March 6, 2026.

Published in 1957, the original Cat in the Hat tells the story of a young brother and sister who, during one cold and rainy day when their mother isn't home, are visited by the cat and his assistants, Things One and Two.

Dr. Seuss Enterprises Bosses Make YouTube “Top Company Priority” As Family Brand Readies ‘Seuss Circle Time’ & Expands Little Dot Studios Pact
Image
Exclusive: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose,” goes the famous Dr. Seuss refrain – and the late author’s universe of characters are steering directly towards YouTube.

Dr. Seuss Enterprises is today launching Seuss Circle Time, an eight-part YouTube summer takeover series that supports early learning through storytelling, singing, dancing and interactive play. This is part of a major investment into the company’s YouTube channel following a massive spike in viewership.

The show will be hosted by presenters Ziggy and Tizzie and Dr. Seuss’ characters, with each 30-minute episode featuring music, games and learning activities in imaginative settings such as the Circle Time House and Truffula Forest, before hour-long episodes begin in September.

The series comes after the Dr. Seuss YouTube channel relaunched with new investment in July 2024, leading to subscriber growth of 1,084% and viewing up 993%, according to its own analysis.

Coyote contre Acmé (2026)
The Cat in the Hat directors defend Warner Bros’ decision during Coyote Vs. Acme debacle
Coyote contre Acmé (2026)
It seems like nearly everyone sided against Warner Bros. when the studio made the decision to shelve Coyote Vs. Acme, as the family film was already completed. Much like Batgirl, despite what the final product’s reception would turn out to be, the work of the artists involved in the production seemingly went on just to become a tax write-off. Warners is now producing a new animated version of the Dr. Seuss classic, The Cat in the Hat, and the team behind the upcoming film would take a surprising stand on the issue.

According to Deadline, The Cat in the Hat creatives have defended Warner Bros. on making the decision to shelve Coyote Vs. Acme, saying that the situation should not “become representative of how painful and atrocious the industry can be.” Co-director and co-writer of Cat in the Hat, Alessandro Carloni, recently spoke at a Work in Progression session...

Why Russia Is Trying To Ban The Shrek Franchise
Image
Yes, this is real.

According to a recent report in the Moscow Times, Russian lawmakers have targeted Shrek, the ogre, for potential censorship after he was deemed to be having a "destructive impact" on Russian children. Shrek was a monstrous character first introduced in the 1990 picture book "Shrek!" by William Steig. The book was adapted into a satirical feature film in 2001, altering Steig's story into a pointed anti-Disney story about fairy tale characters who become victims of forced relocation. Shrek, voiced by Mike Myers, was the antihero forced to perform heroic tasks in order to get other fairy tale creatures out of his yard. "Shrek" was an enormous success, and spawned a massive media franchise that remains active to this day; "Shrek 5" is due in theaters in 2026.

One can watch a video of higher-ups in the Russian government having a brainstorming session/slide show about the influence of world media on the Russian population,...

Bill Hader recalls his daughter trolling him about his upcoming Cat in the Hat animated film
Image
While the live-action The Cat in the Hat from 2003 resides in infamy with critics and audiences alike, the Dr. Seuss story will get re-adapted into an animated feature, much like 2018’s The Grinch. Saturday Night Live star Bill Hader plays the Cat, with Quinta Brunson, Bowen Yang, Xochitl Gomez, Matt Berry and Paula Pell starring as primary cast members.

Hader would make an appearance at this year’s CinemaCon during the Warner Bros. panel to present the audience with a special look at The Cat in the Hat. According to Entertainment Weekly, after showing a trailer that was still a work in progress, Hader would tell an anecdote about how his own daughter disapproved of his casting as the Cat in the movie. The Barry star explained that his youngest wanted Ryan Gosling to be the star after watching Barbie,

Well, I will say, I have three daughters, and I...

Netflix’s Latest Engagement Report Shows What’s Truly Driving Views
Image
Netflix just dropped its Engagement Report for the second half of 2024, revealing how people spent their time watching movies and shows. From July to December, members watched over 94 billion hours, marking a 5% increase from the previous year. This shows a solid rise in interest, and it’s clear that the more people enjoy what’s on the platform, the more they keep coming back.

One standout is Squid Game Season 2, which premiered just six days before the year ended. Despite the short time frame, it became the most-watched series, with 87 million views. But, it’s important to note that even big hits like this make up only a tiny fraction—less than 1%—of total viewing time.

Another trend we’re seeing is the growing popularity of animated films. A full 10 of the top 25 films were animated, including favorites like Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch (67M views), Trolls Band Together (61M), and...

Netflix Releases List of Most Watched Movies and Series of Second Half of 2024
Image
Pictures: Netflix

For data nerds – it’s our favorite time of the year – the second half of 2024 viewing data has just been released! We’ve got a lot more to come, but what are the most-watched movies and series of the second half of the year? Let’s dive straight in.

What are the key points that Netflix has cited as being the most important for this data drop? Netflix reiterated that Engagement (time spent watching) is the best metric to gauge member satisfaction and that this data drop covers ~99% of all video watch time on Netflix and that no single title accounts for more than 1% of total Netflix viewing.

Squid Game S2 had the most hours viewed (0.7% of total viewing), and their total watch time for this period of July to December 2024 was 94B hours (5% increase YoY). Their most-viewed series was Squid Game S2 (87M views) despite premiering only 6 days before year-end.

Netflix Viewing Up 5% in Second Half of 2024, ‘Squid Game 2’ Leads as Most-Watched TV Series
Image
Netflix subscribers streamed more content than ever in the back half of 2024 — and the second season of Korean hit drama “Squid Game” was the biggest TV show on the service.

The streamer’s customers watched more than 94 billion hours on Netflix in the second half of last year, a 5% increase year over year, according to its latest Engagement Report sharing data on what people watched on from July-December 2024.

“Squid Game” Season 2, despite premiering on Dec. 26 with only six days left in the year, dominated the period as Netflix’s most-viewed series with nearly 87 million views. That said, no single title accounts for more than 1% of total viewing on Netflix. For example, “Squid Game 2” represented only 0.7% of global viewing for the time period. That’s “why we invest in a wide variety of quality shows and films and why we need to make them great, so that every time a member...

Christmas 2024 Was Most-Streamed Day of TV Ever, According to Nielsen
Image
You are reading an exclusive WrapPRO article for free. Want to level up your entertainment career? Go here for more information.

The most wonderful time for streaming officially has a date: Dec. 25, 2024. That single day accounted for 51.2 billion minutes of cumulative streaming time, according to Nielsen, making it the most-streamed day of television for the U.S. in the company’s history of measurement.

Streaming represented roughly half of total TV consumption on that day, clocking in at 49.5%.

So what were people watching on Christmas Day? Unsurprisingly, Netflix stole the show. The Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans NFL game was the most-watched event of the day, securing 2.98 billion minutes streamed alone. The Ravens and Texans likely got an assist from Beyoncé, who performed during halftime. That was followed by the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Pittsburg Steelers game, which also secured 2.98 billion minutes streamed, though it saw roughly 200,000 fewer streaming minutes than the other game.

'Havoc' Director Calls the Netflix Action Movie a "Love Letter to the Heroic Bloodshed Genre"
Image
The director behind the acclaimed action movie saga The Raid and The Raid 2, Gareth Evans, has now said exactly what fans want to hear about his upcoming collaboration with Tom Hardy. Havoc, which, after years of waiting, is now set to hit Netflix later this year, has now been described as a “love letter to the heroic bloodshed genre” by the filmmaker. Does he really need to say anything else?

Discussing the long-awaited action thriller at the recent Next on Netflix showcase (via What’s on Netflix), Evans offered some insight into Hardy’s character (“a corrupt American detective on a relentless mission to rescue a mayoral candidate’s son from the criminal underworld in Chinatown”), and revealed that, much like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and Carry-On before it, Havoc is a Christmas action movie.

Set over two nights during the festive season, Evans did joke that “It’s not really a Christmas movie,...

The follow-up film, Wicked: For Good, will be released in November 2025, but Chu already has his schedule booked as the next film is slated for release. Chu is going from Frank L. Streaming Ratings: ‘Squid Game’ Scores 2024’s Biggest Premiere
Image
Christmas week brought a bounty of viewing to streaming platforms, with eight titles crossing the billion-minute mark in Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Netflix’s Squid Game, however, stood well apart from the pack.

The Korean hit posted the highest single-week viewing tally for any streaming title in the United States in 2024 with 4.92 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Dec. 23-29. Season two of Squid Game premiered Dec. 26.

The show’s premiere week was the best for any title in two years, in fact — since Wednesday delivered about 5.3 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 2022. Squid Game also smashed its own previous high of 3.26 billion minutes during season one’s run in 2021. Netflix had earlier said season two set a worldwide record for a premiere week, based on the streamer’s internal data.

Coming in second overall was Virgin River, Squid Game‘s tonal opposite, at 2.25 billion minutes of viewing,...

Streaming Ratings: ‘The Traitors’ Scores Series High With Season 3 Premiere
Image
The Traitors is becoming more than just a cult favorite.

The competition series opened its third season with its largest viewing numbers to date: It registered 499 million minutes of viewing on Peacock for the week of Jan. 6-12, based on preliminary Nielsen streaming figures. Season three premiered on Jan. 9. (Nielsen’s streaming figures include all episodes of a show, so some of that time came from prior seasons.)

That’s a series high for The Traitors, whose previous best showing in Nielsen’s streaming ratings was 402 million minutes the week after its season two premiere in January 2024. It’s also the best premiere week for any Peacock unscripted series to date and was the top unscripted show in the United States last week across all platforms.

Full streaming ratings for Jan. 6-12 from Nielsen will be released in a few weeks, per the ratings service’s agreement with streaming platforms.

‘Wicked’ Isn’t Broadway’s Biggest Film Adaptation — but Its Box Office Achievements Are Just Getting Started
Image
This claim, included in Universal’s thorough and impressive list of box office achievements for 2024, is technically true: “Domestically ‘Wicked‘ is now … the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation of all-time at the domestic office ahead of ‘Grease’ ($188.62M).”

Also technically true is that “The Grinch” is bigger than “Gone with the Wind,” “Sing” is bigger than “Jaws,” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is bigger than “The Godfather.” Also, the 1977 first “Star Wars” is only the third biggest success of that franchise.

Presenting grosses without adjusting skews the real picture of how they compare. It is a prime case of film history erasure, an all-too common occurrence these days. The somewhat (but not impossible in most cases) effort to sort out the true success of films through history starts with adjusting box office takes to current ticket prices. Normally, that is fairly simple, since we know the costs by year and can do the math.

Christmas action films, Red One and Carry-On, topped the streaming charts in December
Image
‘Twas the season to be thrilled with action. As people settled in and got cozy with their kith and kin this past Christmas, sometimes watching classics like Home Alone, A Christmas Story and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation just isn’t enough. Many viewers checked out some newer movies that incorporated action with their holiday theme. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Dwayne Johnson’s Red One on Prime Video became a big hit in homes after its brief theatrical run that grossed $186 million globally. His Santa action flick would be followed by Netflix’s Carry-On, which stars Taron Edgerton as a Tsa agent working on Christmas Eve when he’s faced with a terrorist plot.

Red One faced much criticism for its content, but the newest live-action film from megastar Dwayne Johnson topped the streaming charts in December with 2.1 billion minutes of viewing. Meanwhile, while finishing in second overall, Carry-On was...

Streaming Ratings: ‘Red One’ Tops ‘Carry-On’ in Holiday Action Movie Matchup
Image
Prime Video’s Red One and Netflix’s Carry-On both had big opening weeks in streaming, with Red One coming out on top in Nielsen’s charts.

Christmas-themed action comedy Red One, which the Amazon streamer touted as its biggest worldwide premiere to date, racked up 2.1 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Dec. 9-15. (The movie, starring Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson, also had a short theatrical run, making about $186 million worldwide at the box office.)

Carry-On, meanwhile, scored 1.69 billion minutes of viewing for Netflix for the week, albeit with one fewer day: It premiered on Dec. 13, while Red One began streaming Dec. 12 on Prime Video. The thriller starring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman is currently in Netflix’s top five English-language films to date (as measured over the first 91 days of release).

Chris Hemsworth & Tom Holland's $94M Box Office Disappointment Becomes Netflix Global Hit 10 Years Later
Image
Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland's $94 million box office disappointment has become a global Netflix hit 10 years later. The two stars are best known for their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thor and Peter Parker/Spider-Man, appearing in a total of two movies together – Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The Australian actor has appeared as the Asgardian superhero in nine total MCU movies, while the British actor has appeared in six.

However, Hemsworth and Holland have appeared in many movies outside the MCU. The former is known for his role in Netflix's action franchise, Extraction, starring in the 2020 film, a 2023 sequel, with another sequel on the way. Holland has also starred in the Netflix film, The Devil All the Time, and some other direct-to-streaming titles, such as Apple TV's Cherry, directed by the Russo brothers. Hemsworth and Holland have also starred together outside the MCU, though the...

Streaming Ratings: ‘The Madness’ Claims Top Overall Spot for Second Week in a Row
Image
Netflix’s conspiracy thriller The Madness stayed atop the U.S. streaming charts in the first week of December.

The series starring Colman Domingo grabbed 1.48 billion minutes of viewing time for the week of Dec. 2-8, Nielsen says, marking its second week as the No. 1 overall title. The Madness and Bluey (1.01 billion minutes of viewing on Disney+) were the only two streaming shows to top a billion minutes for the week.

Paramount+ continued to get strong showings from Landman — whose 773 million minutes of viewing are a high so far — and Lioness, which hit a series high of 692 million viewing minutes in the week leading up to its Dec. 8 season finale. The two shows ranked third and fourth among original series for the week, while Tulsa King (385 million) placed ninth among originals, hanging in the top 10 two-plus weeks after its season ended.

‘The Madness’ Tops Thanksgiving Week Nielsen Streaming Charts As Holiday Films Come Into Rotation
Image
Audiences flocked to a healthy mix of streaming original content and familiar, older titles during Thanksgiving week.

Nielsen’s latest streaming report, which was delayed due to the holidays, puts Netflix’s The Madness at the top of the charts with 1.3B minutes viewed from November 25 to December 1. The Colman Domingo-led crime thriller series was one of four billion-minute titles during this interval — three of which were from the same streamer.

Bluey was the outlier, putting up another monster week with just under 1.1B minutes viewed, good enough for third place. Second place was Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey with 1.2B minutes viewed, while fourth place went to Our Little Secret with Lindsay Lohan and Ian Harding.

Netflix’s A Man On The Inside also made it on the list with 933M minutes viewed, as did Prime Video’s Cross with 801M viewing minutes.

2 Idris Elba Survival Movies Ascend Netflix's Global Top 10 Chart
Image
Two survival movies starring Idris Elba have ascended Netflix's Global Top 10 chart. The English actor began his career in television, rising to prominence for his compelling performances as the ambitious drug kingpin Stringer Bell in the HBO series The Wire and as the titular brooding detective in the BBC series Luther, the latter earning him four Emmy nominations. Elba has also made notable appearances in other TV shows, including a recurring role as Charles Miner on the NBC sitcom The Office.

Transitioning to film, Elba's career reached new heights with a series of high-profile roles in blockbuster films, including Heimdall in six Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and Bloodsport in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. His versatility was on full display in more blockbuster movies like Prometheus, Pacific Rim, Star Trek Beyond, Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, and Sonic the Hedgehog. One Of Liam Neeson's Worst Movies Becomes Global Netflix Hit 2 Years Later
Image
One of Liam Neeson's worst movies has become a global Netflix hit two years after its release. Beginning his film career in 1978, the Irish actor broke through with his portrayal of Oskar Schindler in Steven Spielberg's acclaimed Holocaust drama Schindler's List in 1993, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. From there, Neeson took on several roles in blockbuster movies, including Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins, and Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy.

However, starting in 2009, Neeson established himself as a prominent action star with roles in the Taken movies, The A-Team, The Grey, Wrath of the Titans, and Cold Pursuit. He's collaborated multiple times with director Jaume Collet-Serra, starring in four of his action films – Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night, and The Commuter. Even as he's expressed interest in retiring from the genre,...

5 Reasons Why the Grinch Hates Christmas So Much
Image
Like clockwork, Christmas is on its way, and so is the Grinch. Every holiday season, his story returns to our screens. The tale first appeared in 1957 when Dr. Seuss introduced us to How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, a children’s book that quickly became a holiday staple.

The story takes place in Whoville, a lively, Christmas-obsessed town nestled in the valley. The Grinch, meanwhile, lives high above them on Mount Crumpit with his dog, Max. Grumpy and bitter, he can’t stand the Whos. One year, he decides enough is enough and devises a plan to stop Christmas entirely.

He sneaks into town, swipes the decorations, snags the presents, and even takes away their holiday feast. But his grand scheme to ruin the holiday backfires when the Whos gather to celebrate anyway, showing him that Christmas is about more than material things.

3 Dr. Seuss Movies Are Dominating On Streaming (Even Though 2 Are Based On The Same Book)
Image
Three Dr. Seuss adaptations are dominating a major streaming chart, even though two of them are based on the same book. Dr. Seuss, which is the pen name of Theodor Seuss Geisel, is an iconic children's book author and illustrator. Some of his most well-known works are 1954's Horton Hears a Who!, 1957's The Cat in the Hat, 1960's One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, 1960's Green Eggs and Ham, 1965's Fox in Socks, and many more. His work usually includes fantastical designs for unusual characters, creatures, and worlds.

Over the years, many Dr. Seuss movies have made it to the screen. A few of his works have been adapted into live-action blockbusters, including the Mike Myers-led The Cat in the Hat, which debuted in 2003. However, it is much more common for his work to be adapted into animated specials or features such as 2008's Horton Hears a Who,...

$261M Terminator Disappointment Finds Redemption In Netflix's Global Chart 5 Years Later
Image
One of the Terminator franchise's biggest commercial disappointments has found streaming success on Netflix. Since the first movie was released in 1984, there have been six Terminator movies and two television series in the long-running franchise. The franchise's first movie, directed and written by James Cameron, set the tone and established Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, along with presenting the now iconic characters of Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese.

The first sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, is widely considered to be the franchise's best movie, along with being one of the best all-time movie sequels. None of the ensuing movies, released from 2003-2019, were able to reach the same level of acclaim as the original two installments. The franchise expanded onto television with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which aired from 2008-2009, along with Terminator Zero, an anime series that debuted on Netflix in 2024.

Tyler Perry's New WW2 Movie Becomes Netflix Global Success Despite 50% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Tyler Perry's new Netflix movie has become a streaming hit despite mixed reviews. Perry is best known as the creator of the Madea franchise, along with playing the titular role in the comedic film series. As a filmmaker and actor, many of Perry's movies and television series have been met with divisive reception, especially from critics. However, his work has had a great deal of mainstream success, with the Madea movies only being a portion of this.

Perry has also gained recognition for the 2005 movie Diary of a Mad Black Woman, written and adapted from his stage play. He found longevity with the Tyler Perry's House of Payne series, which aired for eight seasons on TBS. In addition to Madea, Perry starred in J.J. ‘Carry-On’ Closes In On Netflix All-Time Top 10 As ‘Virgin River’s Return Takes Top Weekly TV Spot
Image
Carry-On, a film about traveling through the airport at Christmas, is on course to break into Netflix’s top ten films of all time.

The thriller, which stars Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, and Sofia Carson, bested its performance last week by adding another 55M views on top of last week’s 42M number. It remains number one on Netflix’s weekly film charts, having already become Netflix’s biggest launch of a film this year.

Given that it has scored 97M views in its first ten days, Carry-On, which was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and produced by Amblin Partners, it could well enter Netflix’s top ten films of all time. 'Life Will Find a Way': Sonic 3 Writer Addresses Key Character's Fate in the Movie
Image
This article contains Major Spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3's satisfying ending teased a brighter future for the franchise. However, the film could also be one recurring character's swan song in the series.

Few sequels achieved what Sonic the Hedgehog 3 did for its franchise; it is bigger and better than previous films, and it greenlighted yet another sequel upon release. Fans were also stoked when more characters from the games were teased in a post-credits scene; Sonic will have more teammates and enemies in the next film. That may or may not include Doctor Eggman (or any of his iterations), however. Jim Carrey previously hinted at retirement, which meant his time as Robotnik is uncertain. Speaking to Screen Rant, scriptwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller explained how they addressed this in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

The Dark Lisa Kudrow & Ray Romano Comedy Series Blowing Up Netflix's Top Charts
Image
Streaming audiences have been all over the place with their holiday viewing this year. Instead of non-stop Christmas classics, we've seen Megan Fox sci-fi thrillers dominating Netflix's charts, and Gerard Butler-led crime thrillers taking over the Max rankings. That said, viewers have still managed to squeeze in some traditional holiday fare amid all the crime and sci-fi stuff, with Prime Video audiences propelling Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1996 Christmas comedy "Jingle All the Way" to the top of that streamer's charts. But even as the festive classics surface for the season, our collective appetite for darker offerings appears to be insatiable, as a new Netflix comedy drama series has managed to stand out amid the holiday stream-fest.

Back in 2022, "Dead to Me" creator Liz Feldman signed on to helm new Netflix series "No Good Deed," and now the show has finally arrived. It seems it was worth the wait, too,...

Jim Carrey's Divisive Christmas Movie Becomes Streaming Hit 24 Years Later
Image
Jim Carrey's divisive Christmas movie has become a streaming hit 24 years after its original release. The comedic actor rose to stardom during the 1990s with a series of box office hits, starting with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber (all released in 1994), followed by Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Batman Forever (both in 1995). These hits made Carrey one of the highest-paid comedic actors, starting with the slightly darker comedy, The Cable Guy, in 1996 and Liar Liar in 1997.

Carrey's success as a leading comedic actor continued well into the 2000s, starting with How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000, which became the second highest-grossing Christmas movie of all time, and continued with Bruce Almighty, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Yes Man in the following years. In 2009, Carrey played multiple characters in the 3D animated adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens story, A Christmas Carol,...

‘Carry-On’ Continues Its Netflix Lead, and Christmas Bargain Hunting Dominates VOD
Image
Christmas bargain shopping usually doesn’t start until December 26. But this week’s Video on Demand top 10 lists suggest the sales started early. And once again this year, Ron Howard’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (Universal) leads the way.

Overall, nine different holiday-related movies charted either at iTunes or Fandango (as VOD) or among the current top 10 movies streaming on Netflix. For the latter, that includes their original thriller “Carry-On,” with the Christmas Eve-set movie starring Tagon Egerton and Jason Bateman #1 for the second straight week.

It’s an odd year for VOD, with fewer than usual top recent films getting a pre-holiday release with potential digital gift ability. None of November’s four biggest hits, “Gladiator II” will go digital after its fifth weekend in theaters. It is likely to lead VOD activity both because of its strengths and the lack of competition during this period.

'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' Petition Demands 4-Hour Director's Cut
Image
A fan of Jim Carrey’s iconic 2000 holiday classic How The Grinch Stole Christmas – usually just referred to as The Grinch – have taken it upon themselves to make an unexpected petition about the movie on Change.org. While there are many movies and TV shows that have become the subject of petitions, the majority of those are normally demanding the reversal of a cancelation, or moaning over a particular plotline that they feel should be remade. When it comes to The Grinch, the petition is asking for something a little different; that Ron Howard should release his rumored four-hour cut of the movie.

Yes, despite the movie coming in at a trim 104 minutes, Howard has previously suggested he originally had a much longer version of the Dr. Seuss story in the can, and he did some extensive (Christmas) trimming to end up with the version everyone knows and loves. That...

Streaming Ratings: ‘A Man on the Inside,’ ‘Landman’ Have Solid Debuts
Image
The week of Nov. 18-24 was a good one to premiere a streaming show with “man” in the title.

Netflix’s A Man on the Inside and Paramount+’s Landman both ranked among the top five original streaming series in their first week on the charts. A Man on the Inside, starring Ted Danson as a widower who goes undercover in a retirement community working for a private investigator, drew 880 million minutes of viewing for the week. That’s either the second- or third-best debut for a streaming comedy in 2024, depending on whether you classify The Bear (1.23 billion minutes for the week of its season three premiere) as one. (Nobody Wants This had just over a billion minutes for its first week.)

Landman, meanwhile, snagged 653 million minutes of viewing, largely for its first two episodes that premiered Nov. 17. The third episode, which debuted Nov. 24, had only a day to contribute...
