If you asked many actors to name a favorite movie from their own body of work, they’d probably dodge the question, saying their films are like children. You just can’t choose. Well, the bold ones made the choice and Gene Hackman was one of them. And if you, as a film lover, were asked to guess what his pick was, you’d name one of his hits.
Was it The French Connection, the neo-noir action thriller that earned him his first Oscar? Bonnie & Clyde would be a great guess too, since it marked the first time that Hackman ever got noticed by the good people at the Academy Awards (nomination for Best Supporting Actor). What about Unforgiven? That, too, was brilliant, and so were Superman and The Conversation.

The news that Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, had been found dead sent shockwaves through Hollywood. Hackman had an extraordinary career, winning Academy Awards for his roles in The French Connection and Unforgiven.
Of course, many of you will know him best for playing the villainous Lex Luthor in three Superman movies released between 1978 and 1987. He retired from acting in 2004 after Welcome to Mooseport and wrote several novels, including Justice for None.
The unusual circumstances surrounding Hackman and Arakawa's deaths have raised big questions and we finally have some answers. Heather Jarrell, the chief medical examiner for the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator held a press conference yesterday. She confirmed that Hackman died of cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer's disease as a significant contributing factor.
As for Arakawa, she's believed to have died around a week before her husband from hantavirus, a potentially fatal virus transmitted by mice.

One of the first major film stars to break out in the 1970s, Gene Hackman was the epitome of New Hollywood. An actor with livewire intensity, he had a grit and brusqueness that few others could ever match, and he was perfectly suited for the types of anti-heroic, morally gray characters that would define the Hollywood revolution of the decade. In his Oscar-winning role as a violent, thuggish cop on a mission in “The French Connection,” he showcases unnerving levels of adrenaline and thirst for justice: The way he grits his teeth during the movie’s iconic car chase scene elevates it from very good to extraordinary. In the hands of another actor, the role could be one-note, but Hackman made it iconic.
What Hackman a great actor wasn’t just his talent for playing morally compromised, loathsome men — although his most famous roles over the course of his career fall into that broad archetype.

Gene Hackman, the legendary everyman actor who won two Oscars before stepping away from Hollywood in 2004, and Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their Santa Fe, N.M., home on Wednesday. Hackman was 95. Arakawa, whom he married in 1991, was 64.
While authorities did not suspect foul play, the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa have been ruled suspicious. A detective's affidavit stated that "an open prescription bottle scattered pills" were found on a bathroom counter near Arakawa's body. One of the couple’s dog, a German shepherd, was found dead in the bathroom closet, about 15 feet from Arakawa. Two other family dogs were found alive.
A maintenance worker discovered the bodies on Wednesday. Arakawa was found in the bathroom near a space heater. Her body showed signs of decomposition, per the detective report. Hackman's body, in a similar state, was found in the mud room appearing as if he had "suddenly fallen.

Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Nathan Lane, Viola Davis, Josh Brolin, and Superman actress Valerie Perrine are among the stars mourning Gene Hackman.
The 95-year-old legend and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 63, were found dead on Wednesday, alongside their dog, in their Santa Fe, N.M., home. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office initially said foul play is not suspected, and there's an "active and ongoing investigation" into their deaths. In a search warrant affidavit released Thursday, authorities said their deaths are "suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation," and that there were "no obvious signs of a gas leak."
Tributes poured in for the beloved actor after the news broke early Thursday. Hackman won two Oscars -- Best Actor for 1971's The French Connection and Best Supporting Actor for 1992's Unforgiven -- and had three other nominations for Bonnie & Clyde (1967), I Never Sang for My Father...

Legendary actor Gene Hackman has passed away at the age of 95. Tragically, according to authorities, Hackman’s 64-year-old wife Betsy Arakawa, and a dog, were also found deceased in the couple’s New Mexico home. While “no foul play is suspected” the cause of death has yet to be determined.
It’s hard to overstate Hackman’s impact on the world of film; he starred in all-time classics like The Conversation, Night Moves, Bonnie & Clyde, Superman and, of course, The French Connection. Plus, he had key supporting roles in more modern masterpieces such as Unforgiven and The Royal Tenenbaums (even if he clearly didn’t want to be in the latter).
Then, after decades of acclaimed performances in countless films, he gave up on the entire industry after making a single Ray Romano movie.

Given the sad news that Gene Hackman, the most legendary of all actors, has passed away, tributes will (appropriately) be coming in non-stop. After all, he was the greatest of the greats, and the fact that he retired relatively early (back in 2004) adds to his mystique, as he went out at the top of his game. Given his rich legacy of work, everyone will no doubt be offering tributes to his best movies, like Unforgiven, The French Connection, The Royal Tenenbaums, and many more. Here at JoBlo, we’re gonna do something a little different and pay tribute to the star by singling out some of his lesser-seen films, hoping that maybe fans of his find something on this list they haven’t seen before and can enjoy for the first time!

Subhash K Jha revisits the Amitabh Bachchan-Ben Kingsley brilliant drama Teen Patti in this special look back feature at the film that released in 2010.
Teen Patti is a surprisingly skilful and audaciously complex piece of drama. It is a tautly scripted and brilliantly executed film on the deep-rooted link between financial ambitions and moral compromises.
Writer-director Leena Yadav gives the theme of monetary indulgence a dizzying but pinned-down spin. She speeds confidently across out-of-control lives on a college campus with the confident vision of a raconteur who spins a seemingly indecipherable web of deceit, intrigue, and crime.
Miraculously, Yadav’s yarn preserves its pencil-sharp edge of intrigue and wit right to the end. The story of the eccentric math magician’s adventures takes the narrative from underground addas to high-class casinos, where Professor Venkat Subramaniam, his junior colleague Madhavan, and four students convert the professor’s newly discovered mathematical theory...

It's hard to believe that an actor like Gene Hackman could ever be worried about ruining his career. The same actor who won an Oscar for his roles in The French Connection and Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, the same man who dazzled audiences in Bonnie & Clyde and Enemy of the State. But that's exactly how he felt about taking a certain part in a certain 1978 blockbuster. That's right, Hackman was worried that his role as Lex Luthor, "the greatest criminal mind of our time," in Superman would nuke his entire career. In fact, he nearly quit acting as a result, not believing the same way director Richard Donner did that a man really could fly. Thankfully, he was mistaken.

Ah, celebrity relationships, where privacy can feel like a distant dream. In this arena, Kanye West, now known as Ye, frequently stirs the pot and raises eyebrows. For instance, in an earlier episode of Candace Owens’ podcast, recorded in 2022, West’s remarks certainly stirred the waters. His bold suggestion that Beyoncé should let Jay-Z cheat has led many to wonder just how far is too far, even for him.

This comment follows the infamous cheating scandal that came to light in 2016, largely ignited by Beyoncé’s groundbreaking album Lemonade. While Jay-Z has openly addressed his transgressions, West’s unsolicited advice seems to traverse beyond conventional decorum.

Once upon a time, in a magic kingdom, long before the Renaissance and days of corporate intellectual property piranhas, trouble engulfed the Walt Disney Studios. The New Hollywood era had transformed American moviemaking, with such titles as The Godfather, The Exorcist, Bonnie & Clyde, The Last Picture Show and M*A*S*H* attracting record-breaking audiences. These films, often directed by young, counterculture directors, also pushed the envelope on the amount of sexuality and violence a movie could show without landing an X rating.
At the same time, the Disney Studio, with its long reputation for nostalgic, schmaltzy, squeaky-clean family entertainment, seemed like a product of a bygone era. With the company facing an ever more financially tenuous future, the company bosses decided on a new strategy: emulate New Hollywood's success with more adult-leaning movies, while still maintaining the Disney brand as kiddie-friendly. If those two approaches seem at odds with one another,...

Robert Towne, the renowned screenwriter and filmmaker responsible for the scripts of movies like "Chinatown," "Shampoo," and "Mission: Impossible," has died. The Hollywood Reporter shared the news (confirmed by publicist Carri McClure) that the 89-year-old storyteller passed away on Monday in his home.
A singularly influential and talented craftsman, Towne was as revered for the scripts that didn't end up with his name on them as for the ones that did. In 1973, when Francis Ford Coppola won the Oscar for Best Screenplay for "The Godfather," he acknowledged Towne's contributions in his acceptance speech, saying, "Giving credit where it's due, I'd like to thank Bob Towne, who wrote the very beautiful scene between Marlon [Brando] and Al Pacino in the garden — that was Bob Towne's scene."
According to THR, other scripts he worked on without credit include Oliver Stone's "8 Million Ways To Die," Paul Schrader's "The Yakuza," Jack Nicholson's "Drive,...

The rise of Gene Hackman happened to coincide with a significant change in the cinematic landscape that resulted in one of the most creatively exciting moments in the history of the medium. Hackman got his breakout role in the highly influential crime film Bonnie & Clyde, which signified a sea change in which Hollywood studios began investing in more artistic mainstream projects. In the subsequent decade, Hackman starred in such acclaimed films as I Never Sang For My Father, The French Connection, The Conversation, and A Bridge Too Far. While he was arguably one of the most popular actors of his generation, Hackmans starring role in the road drama Scarecrow wasnt given the credit that it deserved.

Its hard to overstate how significantly the 1967 crime movie classic Bonnie & Clyde changed the state of American filmmaking. With its striking visuals, inclusion of graphic sexual and violent content, emphasis on young protagonists, and surprisingly nihilistic themes, the film served as the gateway to the New Hollywood era of the 1970s. The film is still cited as a classic to this day, with many similar runaway crime thrillers utilizing the format that director Arthur Penn had perfected. The film grew so iconic that there was inherent trepidation about ever revisiting the material. However, the 2019 neo-Western The Highwaymen re-examined the Bonnie & Clyde story from the perspective of the lawmen tasked with bringing them to justice.

Late in the highly entertaining and enlightening new HBO Documentary Films movie on the life and career of Faye Dunaway we learn how much this iconic star just loves coming to the Cannes Film Festival. “Just about every year,” she says — not only for the world’s best films but also to immerse herself in all aspects of filmmaking. I have seen her many times just soaking it all up cinematically both here in Cannes and Telluride, to name two fests.
So it seems appropriate that the Cannes Classics section would be the place for the World Premiere Wednesday night — in the presence of Dunaway as the French like to call it — of this terrific new docu in which Dunaway pretty much tells it all straight about her life, loves, desires, ambitions, movies, co-stars, depression, controversies, family and hopes for the future in a profession she says she can’t imagine not working in.

Exclusive: Faye Dunaway (Bonnie & Clyde), Harvey Keitel (Bugsy) and Andrew McCarthy (The Blacklist) have signed on to star in Fate, a suspenseful, supernatural romance that will launch international sales via Highland Film Group at Cannes.
Set to enter production in Vancouver this month, the film’s plot is under wraps, though its key location, the fictional Vista hotel, is said to draw inspiration from the iconic Los Angeles movie theater of the same name, which filmmaker Quentin Tarantino refurbished in 2022. Jonathan Baker is directing and producing the project, which has been in development for five years, and tells Deadline, “there is an excellent chance it will stand as one of the most memorable love stories of our time.”
Known for iconic turns in films like Bonnie & Clyde and Chinatown, Dunaway comes to Fate after collaborating with Baker on his debut feature Inconceivable, a 2017 thriller also starring Gina Gershon, Nicky Whelan and Nicolas Cage.

Dracula will be revived in Dracula: A Love Tale, adding to a long list of vampire films. Bonnie & Clyde vs. Dracula is as bizarre as it sounds, featuring an unexpected mash-up. The movie fails to deliver on its promise of a Dracula vs. Bonnie and Clyde showdown, falling short of expectations.

In February 2024, acclaimed French filmmaker Luc Besson announced plans to revive the dashing bloodsucker in Dracula: A Love Tale, adding to a roster of over 100 feature films featuring the fiendish foe. In “Back to Black,” Jack O’Connell’s Blake Fielder-Civil comes into the life of Amy Winehouse — played by an exceptional Marisa Abela — with seductive bravado, sweeping the singer off her feet on their first meeting in a London pub thanks to, among other things, a lip-synced rendition of the Shangri-La’s “Leader of the Pack”.
As the divisive biopic, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and released in the U.K. by StudioCanal this Friday (and in the U.S. by Focus Features on May 17), agonizingly portrays, the smitten pair quickly descend into violent self-destruction — a “toxic co-dependency” as Fielder-Civil later describes it in the film — fueled by alcoholism and drug abuse.
Many may question the ethics of picking at a tragic story that was heavily chronicled and sensationalized by the media in real-time during Winehouse’s final years. But for anyone who’s been tracking O’Connell’s career, the opportunity to...

Three of the predicted five Best Limited Series Emmy nominees — “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Shōgun” and “Masters of the Air” — are new shows, while the other two are, well, not. “Fargo,” in first place in the odds,” and “True Detective: Night Country,” in third, are competing with their respective fifth and fourth seasons. Both Emmy-winning shows, the anthology series debuted within months of each other in 2014, and if they both make the cut, it’ll be the very first time they’ll go head to head in a series race, 10 years late.
A decade ago, the shows could’ve — and should’ve — collided at the Emmys. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, “True Detective” debuted that January on HBO to great acclaim and became a ratings smash. The 1970s was one of the most creative periods in American cinema, after films like Bonnie & Clyde, Midnight Cowboy, and Easy Rider ushered in the Hollywood New Wave. Throughout the decade, many directors started getting free rein and monetary support from major studios to experiment with form and style. Francis Ford Coppola, for example, went from getting tremendous push-back throughout his production of The Godfather at the start of the decade to infamously having no oversight of Apocalypse Now several years later.

Emma Thompson holds a distinct Oscars record. She is the only person in the history of the Academy Awards to win for both acting and writing. She took home the Best Actress trophy in 1993 for “Howard’s End.” Three years later, she collected an Oscar bookend with her Best Adapted Screenplay win for bringing Jane Austen‘s 1811 novel “Sense and Sensibility” to the screen.
Prior to Thompson’s double wins, several others contended for both acting and writing. Orson Welles won Best Original Screenplay in 1942 with Herman J. Mankiewicz for “Citizen Kane.” He also picked up a Best Actor nomination for the same film. Warren Beatty has a rich history in both acting and writing awards. He was nominated for Best Actor in 1968 for “Bonnie & Clyde,” in 1979 for “Heaven Can Wait, in 1982 for “Reds,” and in 1992″ for “Bugsy.” He picked up Original Screenplay bids in 1976 for “Shampoo” (shared with...

Gene Hackman is one of the legendary movie stars from the New Hollywood era. His career began with movies such as Bonnie & Clyde, The French Connection, and The Conversation, and he continued for decades with the Christopher Reeve Superman franchise, blockbusters like Crimson Tide and Enemy of the State, and his second Oscar-winning role in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven. Hackman retired in the mid-2000s to write novels in New Mexico, which resulted in a strange cap to the prolific career. While Hackman may have left the industry, his last on-screen appearance involved the industry coming to him. Despite retirement, Hackman showed up for one more television program: Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

Sadao Nakajima passed away from pneumonia on 11th June, 2023. He was 88 years old. Active as a director until just four years before his passing, Nakajima left behind legacy of work that most directors would dream of. Alongside Kinji Fukasaku and Junya Sato, he is credited as being one of the main names to define the Yakuza genre, with some of his greatest works coming within that genre for Toei Studios, showcasing a range of styles and narrative complexities while at it. Outside of the yakuza genre as well though, Nakajima made a number of terrific features, mixing a range of genres and filmmaking styles effectively over an illustrious career that lasted a little under 60 years, starting from his debut in 1964 all the way until his swansong in 2019.

Whether The Godfather could be remade today is a volatile topic, but there are clear reasons it would be impossible. For some, nothing is sacred when it comes to cinema. If a film has the ability to be redone in a new way, then it could very well be worth the time and effort. When it comes to The Godfather, however, the mere idea that anyone would attempt to remake what is largely considered one of the greatest films of all time is, quite frankly, sacrilege in the eyes of many. Over 50 years after its release, The Godfather remains untouchable.
While there was a certain degree of anticipation for what filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola and other 1970s "New Hollywood" upstarts were capable of, there was no way of knowing just how phenomenal Coppola’s talents would turn out to be. The Godfather was not his first film, but it...

Quentin Tarantino has found the perfect goodbye to Hollywood.
The “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” auteur is rumored to be announcing his final film, titled “The Movie Critic,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Tarantino is said to be directing the feature film in fall 2023, per THR sources, but is still shopping the script for a studio home.
IndieWire has reached out for comment.
While the logline is still under wraps, “The Movie Critic” is expected to be set in late 1970s Los Angeles with a female lead. THR reported that Tarantino may have used famed film critic Pauline Kael as inspiration for the film. Kael briefly worked as a consultant for Paramount in the late 1970s and closely collaborated with Warren Beatty — her support of “Bonnie & Clyde” when some older critics such as Bosley Crowther hated it helped kick off the whole idea of the New Hollywood.

Michael J. Pollard, whose long list of acting credits stretches back to the late 1950s but likely will is best remembered for his Oscar-nominated, star-making turn as the dimwitted but lovable sidekick C.W. Moss in 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde, has died. He was 80.
His death was announced on Facebook today by filmmaker Rob Zombie, who directed Pollard in 2003’s House of 1000 Corpses. A New York Times obituary cites Pollard’s friend Dawn Walker, who says the actor died Thursday of cardiac arrest at a Los Angeles hospital.

"Y'all really gave us something to believe in. We needed that, for real." Great films from the past continue to inspire new films every day. Check out this trailer mashup combining Arthur Penn's classic Bonnie & Clyde (1967) and Melina Matsoukas's Queen and Slim (2019) arriving in theaters this fall. It's obvious that Queen & Slim is an updated take on the original crime duo, with a screenplay by Lena Waithe; the marketing materials even reference the classic film. H Nelson Tracey (aka "Hint of Film") put together this video making them both feel as one. "Bonnie and Clyde remains a classic movie that catapulted Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway to legendary status. This fall, director Melina Matsoukas is releasing a Queen and Slim as a clear homage but with a modern approach, starring Daniel Kaluuya and newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith. Seeing the similarities, I decided to put them together in this trailer mashup.

The first full-length trailer for Queen & Slim is finally here. The romantic drama comes to us from Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe and Melina Matsoukas, the visionary director of some of this generation's most powerful pop-culture experiences. The movie has been described as a "black Bonnie & Clyde" and according to Matsoukas, it's dedicated to "black people who have lost their lives to police brutality."
The trailer for Queen & Slim begins with an awkward Tinder date as Daniel Kaluuya's Slim meets Jodie Turner-Smith's Queen for the first time. However, things aren't what they seem and this mundane first date quickly turns into something much more and the intensity goes through the roof. From the start, the lines in the sand have been made, and it will be up to audiences to decide whose side they're on when the movie takes off.

It’s a catchy name as seen in the new trailer for the film, which was released on Wednesday, but the movie’s director, Melina Matsoukas, doesn’t think that’s the best comparison.
In a special preview event to the press last week, Matsoukas said that black love stories are often compared to other white archetypes. But rather than turn stars Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith into anti-heroes as in “Bonnie & Clyde,” the story of “Queen & Slim” is meant to be universal with its themes of love, capital punishment, police brutality and the unity of the country.
