“Mandala Murders” is a gripping crime thriller that weaves together ancient rituals, mysticism, and fantasy. The story opens with the enigmatic Aayastis—a secretive group bound by a long-standing vendetta and the possession of a powerful, mystical artifact. Their thirst for vengeance unleashes a chain of events that stretches across decades, linking past traumas to present-day horrors.
When Vikram, a resolute police officer, returns to his hometown, he’s drawn into a web of personal grief and an eerie murder investigation. As he searches for answers about his missing mother, he stumbles upon a series of ritualistic killings marked by a strange, recurring symbol—one that defies logic and points toward something far more sinister.
Simultaneously, Rea, a brilliant yet haunted Cbi officer, is assigned to the Charandaspur case. Carrying the weight of her own past, she dives headfirst into a town steeped in secrets and shadowed by powerful forces.

After Noor’s merciless killing by the masked figure, Jimmy Khan is taken to the hospital. However, the book that he was reading has more history that would explain why the murders were taking place. It is not only an act of destruction but also a lore of macabre creation that defines the killing acts. The killer is not a supernatural force—just a pawn in the grand scheme of things hidden in the lairs of the Varuna Forest. While we move closer to the truth, themes of justice, colonization, and science vs. superstition come into play, as a large chunk of history is unearthed.

In its sixth episode, Mandala Murders leads us through a diagram—and the key of the diagram is Jimmy Khan. Jimmy is the grandson of Giyasuddin Khan, who killed the Aaysti Cult members. While he is the one decoding the symbols to locate what element is sought out in the next murder, he cannot escape the fate created for him. We look back on Jimmy’s life and await a loss that may completely change him.

If we go by the theory that nothing is random in Mandala Murders, then we’ve got to say that Kavita Bharadwaj—Ananya’s sister and Vikram’s fiancée—is an integral part of this tale, despite being in a coma. Episode 4 finally shows us who she was and what really happened to her in detail, and I don’t think the show would have done that had she just been a regular ‘almost dead’ fiancée character. Apart from that, we get to know about the other symbols; the doomed romance between Ananya and Vikram is finally confirmed, and there’s a murder too, a rather visceral one. Let us discuss.

Quite often web series tend to slow down by their third episode, after establishing the main story and context in the first two. But that’s not the case with Netflix’s Mandala Murders. The third episode is as jam-packed as the first two and gives zero respite to our characters. The story moves forward at breakneck speed, with the introduction of Raghubir Yadav’s Shastri ji adding another layer to the mystery. Let us take a closer look.

The potential third victim
Two murders have happened—technically three, but we’re counting the brothers as one. Rea is determined to get to the bottom of whatever it is that is happening, and after a bit of back and forth, she welcomes Vikram to the investigating team. It makes all the sense in the world anyway, with Vikram having a coin, and now, Birju having another coin—it...

The Mandala Murders are not independent acts of violence but a chain of murders with a cosmic map, related to the cult of Aayastis. In the previous episode, we see Pramod Sahni find out about the pharmacy Monalisa Curio, where the killer skins the face of a princess as per the mandala. First came the voyeur’s body, then came the hands of the Shumbh Nishumbh, the Shaunak’s head, and the princess’ face. Ancient scriptures of astronomy and related texts are found in the curio shop, and Jimmy Khan’s predictions have been able to rightly foretell the two murders. As he keeps decoding the symbols, the victims are being hunted by the killer and being taken through the slash of her sword.

Directed by Gopi Puthran and Manan Rawat, I have to say that Mandala Murders is not a very convincing watch, especially when it comes to the sci-fi aspects of the narrative. With the budget they had, and the kind of prolific star cast they could afford, I believe they could have done a much better job. The problem with Mandala Murders was that, at times, the narrative seemed pretentious, and the impact that it could have had was diluted by certain creative choices the creators made. Yes, the premise had tons of potential, but it was totally wasted because of the lack of authenticity backed by strong writing. Long gone are the days when you could have fooled the audience with cheap gimmicks. I think that they had all the opportunity to create an impactful and entertaining series that was unique in its own way, but certain mediocre creative choices...

Alright, the Yantra works. It may have failed Vasudha back in 2000, but it did work for Leela seven years ago, which would be 2018. That’s the mother of Sujay and Vijay, by the way, whom we see seeking help from a mysterious, very guru-like woman in this episode. We don’t see this woman’s face, so we can’t know for sure if this is Vasudha. Alright, let’s head into Mandala Murders episode 2.

Science fiction, horror, fantasy, and thriller—all are blended together into one pulpy mash in Netflix’s latest Indian offering, Mandala Murders. The Yrf-produced series has Vaani Kapoor (making her Ott debut) in the lead, along with Vaibhav Raj Gupta (whom you know from Gullak) and Surveen Chawla. Kapoor doesn’t have much screentime in the first episode, where Gupta and Chawla do most of the heavy lifting. Until 2020, there was a concerted effort from the Indian wing of Netflix, or maybe I should say the Hindi wing of Netflix, to tell stories set in the horror genre. Although Bollywood’s relationship with horror had been quite shaky, the streaming platform started off strong with Ghoul. With the ever-dependable Radhika Apte at the helm, the miniseries was a pretty interesting take on John W. Campbell Jr.’s Who Goes There? Then there was Betaal, which, unlike a lot of people, I actually enjoyed quite a bit. The idea of the Brits coming back to haunt us as zombies is an interesting concept, and it had some committed performances from Vineet Kumar Singh, Aahana Kumra, and Manjiri Pupala. After that we got Typewriter, which seemed promising because it had Sujoy Ghosh at the helm, but it was just a boring mess. In Ghost Stories, let’s be honest, only...

Indian studio Yash Raj Films’ streaming division, Yrf Entertainment, is taking stock of its recent successes in the digital space while looking to the future.
The company’s series, “The Railway Men,” emerged as a standout performer on Netflix, marking a significant milestone for Indian content on the platform. The four-part mini-series, which made its debut on Nov. 18, 2023, maintained its position in Netflix’s Top 10 series list for an impressive 100 consecutive days. This achievement set a new benchmark for Indian series on the streaming platform. The show’s wider appeal was evident as it also secured a spot in the Top 3 on Netflix’s Global Top Shows, holding its ground for several months.
Yrf Entertainment’s first movie collaboration with Netflix, “Maharaj,” also made its mark. The Siddharth P. Malhotra-directed period piece, released on June 21 this year, quickly ascended to the second position on Netflix’s non-English film category top ten list.
