Sister Death (2023)
Sister Death emerges as Netflix’s eerie Halloween offering, diverging from typical jumpscare horror. This visually arresting film navigates the realm of faith, intertwining sinister elements. European production and sales studio Vuelta Group has bought German producer Telepool from Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook.
The deal, struck through Vuelta subsidiary SquareOne, will see a combined business operating under the SquareOne banner. SquareOne and Vuelta Group Germany CEO Al Munteanu will lead the banner, with Michael Heyd serving as CFO and COO.
Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but the combined group will boast a library of over 1,200 titles such as Drive, Intouchables, Olympus Has Fallen, Transporter 3 and the recently released One Life. It will form part of the growing Vuelta Group, which in July last year we revealed had formed through the acquisitions of SquareOne, Paris-based international sales firm Playtime Group and Nordic distributor-producer Scanbox.
Vuelta Group Chairman Jeromt Levy, who launched the group with $50M backing from an unnamed U.S. private equity firm, announced the news today along with Munteanu.

Constantin Film and Big Light Productions has tapped Christian Schwochow, whose credits include “The Crown,” “Munich: The Edge of War” and “Bad Banks,” to direct its upcoming high-profile drama series “Nuremberg,” based on the Nuremberg Trials. The show will be written by Frank Spotnitz, whose credits include “The Man in the High Castle,” “Ransom” and “Leonardo.”
The series follows young survivors of World War II who go to work for Allied prosecutors trying Nazi criminals in Nuremberg, only to find their quest for justice undermined by secret efforts to build a new world order based on power, not principle.
Schwochow said: “The Nuremberg Trials marked a pivotal moment in human history, ushering in a new age of responsibility and justice. This is a story of humanity grappling with its deepest shadows. Its relevance has never been greater, and I am filled with a humble sense of duty to tell this story faithfully.

Another year bites the dust, friends. Another year where I've watched too many horror movies, and now it’s time to face the impossible task of sorting the best into a ranked list. I’ve been doing it since my first year as a big-boy film critic almost a decade ago, but it never gets easier. I’ve seen over 130+ horror movies in 2023! Ten slots aren’t enough to capture the massive breadth of worthwhile horror titles you should consume. I won’t do it, dammit. I can’t.
…Ok maybe I can but still, it’s harder than it looks! There are so many noteworthy films not listed, but that's the beauty of opinions and personal preferences. My list is mine and mine alone. Other critics will have their own takes, and more power to the variety of responses highlighting as many releases as possible. So let’s get...

The best movie villains of 2023 redefine their respective film genres and captivate audiences with compelling performances, stealing the show from the heroes. Characters like Dante Reyes in Fast X and Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie bring new depths to their roles, elevating the overall quality of the films. The villains in movies like Evil Dead Rise and The Conference leave a lasting impact with their terrifying and twisted personas, making them some of the scariest villains of the year.
The best movie villains of 2023 are the greatest representations of how films tackle morality in the 21st century. This new generation of antagonists not only hail from all movie genres, but also aim to combine and rehash established film tropes in new, subversive, and wholly impactful ways. Horror remains as vital as ever. While other films flounder at the box office, horror almost always reigns supreme. Audiences simply cannot get enough. We inherently love to be scared; to be disturbed; to be frightened. To sit in the dark and let something scary take hold of us. The horror films of 2023 were an eclectic bunch — weird, wonderful, both fresh and familiar. Slasher throwbacks, modernist takes on classic tropes, and bold new voices in the genre all presented themselves to us, giving us the creeps in the process.
As is always the case when making a list like this, it's important to recognize the titles that didn't make the cut. So while we're proud of our ranked list of the top 10 horror movies of 2023, we also want to highlight several titles not on the list — "Knock at the Cabin," "The Sacrifice Game," "Haunted Mansion," "The Conference," "The Outwaters," "The Passenger,...

“Beckham” has officially been defeated — the Netflix miniseries, not the soccer star. “The Fall of the House of Usher” moved from second place to first on Netflix’s Top 10 English-language TV list Tuesday.
This shift comes a week ahead of Halloween, fitting for the spooky miniseries based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe. The series from Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy secured 7.9 million views in its second week. With those numbers, it beat out last week’s reigning champion “Beckham,” which secured 6.9 million views.
Also on the English-language Top 10 list were the U.K. limited series “Bodies” in the No. 3 spot with 5.5 million views, the fantasy series “I Woke Up a Vampire” in the No. 4 spot with 3.4 million views and Season 4 of the comedy “Sex Education” in the No.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for The Conference. Based on Mats Strandberg’s novel of the same name, Patrick Ecklund’s Swedish slasher horror The Conference on Netflix clearly takes inspiration from classic slasher films that depict the horrifying ordeals of a group of helpless people being trapped and hunted by a blood-thirsty murderer. But The Conference innovates in its own ways to add drama and chaos to its excitingly harsh experience. Firstly, unlike most slasher films, the film chooses to follow a group of individuals who differ on more things than they agree. On top of that, The Conference chooses to revolve its slasher plot around a group of municipal employees — not the most exciting of lead characters for a horror film. However, quite surprisingly, the jaded group of employees show a different kind of spirit when their survival instincts are challenged. After all, they've survived bureaucracy long...

Looking at PVOD and Netflix charts this week reveals some significant findings.
The just-debuted “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” tops all lists in its first week of release as assumed. That comes 90 days after its release. Did theaters benefit? Not really.
Netflix has a top 10 with eight studio titles, six from Universal, including #1 “Tammy” with Melissa McCarthy. But the big news here? “Fair Play,” last week’s #1 and a $20 million Sundance acquisition for the streamer, dropped off the list after only eight days.
Both suggest a result that could influence future decisions. For “Reckoning,” the hope was that delaying its initial home release 90 days would extend its theatrical run. That didn’t happen.
In the 30 days up to its PVOD release, it grossed less than $2 million in theaters. This year, only a handful of films have had a 60 days or longer window, most at close to that time.

The live-or-die situations of slasher movies typically center around young folks. It’s also common to see those threats occur in or around a school setting. So while most slashers have had a tendency to fixate on teenagers, the new Swedish movie The Conference refreshingly targets a group of adults. In this Scandi-flavored, hunt-and-kill story — one adapted from a novel written by Mats Strandberg — the would-be victims encounter danger during a work conference. However, no team-building exercise could have prepared them for what comes next.
Slasher enthusiasts will detect heavy notes of Christopher Smith’s Severance when watching this movie. Basic similarities aside, the eventual massacre in this story is a great deal more personal for the villain; the inevitable slaughter isn’t incidental. Yet even before the killer shows up, tensions are already running high in Patrik Eklund’s movie. These municipal employees’ work outing — really more of a...
