Jeff Nichols is reluctant to call Filmland a “film festival.” Sure, it’s a convenient term for the Arkansas-based cultural event, which the Little Rock-born filmmaker (whose credits include “Shotgun Stories” and “The Bikeriders”) co-founded with Kathryn Tucker in 2017. But it doesn’t quite capture what distinguishes Filmland, unspooling at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts from Aug. 13-17.
“This is more of a curated program that began with me inviting the people I knew, the friends of mine who helped me make movies, to show up and talk to people,” explains Nichols. “I wanted to create an organization that could connect the community to a conversation about the art of film,” where the community consists of locals deprived of independent and arthouse movies and “closer to my heart, crews of creative people that want to make things, specifically things generated in Arkansas,” Nichols says.

Scream and Ready or Not producer James Vanderbilt is teaming up with Russell Crowe, Rami Malek, and Michael Shannon for Nuremberg, a historical drama set in post-war Germany. After last year’s Clock Tower: Rewind, Scared Stupid Inc. and publisher Yahaha Games will have a little more for you later this week with their own Clock Tower-inspired title, Midnight Special. Not to be confused with the Jeff Nichols’ film, Midnight Special launches May 8 on Steam, and looks to revive the golden age of 90s horror gaming, mixing it with “the visceral aesthetics of Italian Giallo cinema, the dread-filled tempo of classic slasher films, and the surreal undertones of 70s and 80s sci-fi horror.”
You play as Sarah, a babysitter hired to care for twins Jon and Ellie at the Boyd Manor. Though Aaa darlings like Resident Evil and Silent Hill sometimes hog the spotlight, Clock Tower casts a shadow just as long. Even on the Super Famicom, harrowing chase sequences created narrative tension like nails on a chalkboard. The result? An anxiety-inducing horror experience that still looms in the minds of many a '90s gamer. The newest product of Clock Tower's legacy? Midnight Special, which is set to release in early access on Steam on May 8.
A point-and-click survival horror game from Scared Stupid Inc., Midnight Special knows how to twist a familiar formula. Babysitting for a pair of twins in a creepy manor? It's a horror premise that would be equally at home in a Goosebumps novel or Dario Argento film. That's the first sign that Midnight Special is, well, special. From this simple start, we get mysteries, murders, and moderate puzzling. If anyone needed a reason to believe in Giallo games,...

For more than a decade, heritage rock artists have been juicing their live shows by recreating their vintage albums start to finish. That list includes Neil Young (Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere), Bruce Springsteen (The River), U2 (The Joshua Tree), Sonic Youth (Daydream Nation), and Steely Dan (every one of their records). This fall, Patti Smith joints the list when she’ll be playing all of Horses to mark its 50th anniversary. Hailing from Epic Pictures and its specialty horror label Dread, The Mortuary Assistant centers on Rebecca Owens, a recent mortuary science graduate who takes a night shift job at River Fields Mortuary. Marianne Faithfull, the British singer who scored hits including “As Tears Go By” and “Broken English” as she went from a highly publicized romantic relationship with Mick Jagger to worldwide fame in her own right, died Thursday. She was 78.
Faithfull’s death in London was announced by her family in a statement to the BBC.
Faithfull also appeared in such films as I’ll Never Forget What’s’isname (1967) and The Girl on the Motorcycle (1968) and on the stage in Three Sisters and Hamlet, though her career was curtailed in the 1970s by heroin addiction, alcoholism and homelessness.
She forged a dramatic comeback in 1979 with the album Broken English, which landed her a Grammy nomination for best female rock vocal performance. In 2011, she was awarded the Commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, one of France’s highest cultural honors.

Adam Driver, whose early work included Francis Ha and Inside Llewyn Davis, along with the HBO comedy series Girls, has an ongoing and expansive film slate. From acclaimed dramas, with varying budgets, to blockbuster franchises, his acting career enchants audiences and renowned Hollywood talent alike. Over the years, Driver has appeared in movies helmed by Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott. He also received consecutive Academy Award nominations in 2018 and 2019 for his performances in BlacKkKlansman and Marriage Story, directed by Spike Lee and Noah Baumbach, respectively.
Despite having starred in prominent award contenders, Driver is no stranger to genre movies. His most famous, and potentially debatable, role to date is Kylo Ren from Star Wars, a former antagonist who died in the 2019 sequel, The Rise of Skywalker. He also appeared in Midnight Special and 65, portraying an astronaut who inadvertently crash lands on what is revealed to be a prehistoric Earth.

Some heavy hitters are leaving Netflix at the end of the month. Jaws, 8 Mile, The Deer Hunter, and Psycho all sign off on December 31. That’s a combined nine Oscars and 18 nominations. If you haven’t seen any of them, I’d suggest you get them on your list Asap.
Jaws is simply one of the greatest American action films ever made. Many critics don’t even bother with the “one of the best” when referring to Psycho. It is often considered the very best American horror. 8 Mile is a standout musical biopic, unsurpassed in the world of hip-hop. And The Deer Hunter, though difficult, controversial, and ever so slightly dated by now, was still a vital Vietnam War movie that took Best Picture for 1978.
But there are also some minor gems saying goodbye. So, if you’ve already seen the above-mentioned titles, or if the prospect of...

Today is a great day for Tom Hardy fans, as one of the Warrior and Venom star’s highest rated (yet most disappointing when it comes to box office) crime dramas lands on Prime Video. Released in December last year, The Bikeriders finds Hardy starring alongside Austin Butler and Jodie Comer in this tale of a Midwestern motorcycle club who finds themselves evolving from a welcoming place for outsiders to something far more sinister.
Written and directed by Jeff Nichols, who is known for crafting powerful dramas such as Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special, and Loving, The Bikeriders stars a stellar ensemble cast that includes Jodie Comer (28 Years Later), Austin Butler, Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road), Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water), Mike Faist (West Side Story), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead). The Bikeriders is available to stream on Prime Video from December 10, and it’s well worth a ride.

Jeff Nichols is working on a Cormac McCarthy adaptation or two – but then has a new original film he’s also lining up.
When you have two wholly original films on your resume like Mud and Take Shelter, it’s a wonder that you’d ever consider adapting the work of others, yet that’s what Jeff Nichols has been doing for the last few years.
It’s understandable of course: Nichols has been inspired by some incredible works, having produced 2016’s Loving along with The Bikeriders earlier this year. Both films were adaptations of a sort, with the former being based on Nancy Buirski’s 2011 documentary and the latter adapting Danny Lyon’s book of photographs.
Nichols has had other projects on the go in the last few years that have also been adaptation, even if they haven’t come to fruition. There was a fresh take on Alien Nation...

Few actresses capture the essence of the “girl next door” ingenue quite like Kirsten Dunst. However, Dunst’s talent extends far beyond this classic film trope, as she has consistently demonstrated her remarkable acting abilities throughout her career.
Kirsten Dunst has had an active acting career since 1989, and moviegoers may know her from many different roles — depending on their generation — such as Mary Jane Watson in the early 2000s Spider-Man franchise or as the forever young Claudia in the 1994 film Interview with the Vampire.

Dunst was born in 1982 and grew up in Brick Township, New Jersey, a far cry from the glitz of Hollywood, with most of its residents from middle and lower-middle-class backgrounds.
Dunst’s family was no different, though they likely fared better than some of Brick Township’s inhabitants.

Jeff Nichols has big plans for his future, as he has announced that in addition to his planned Cormac McCarthy adaptations, he will be penning his first original feature since 2016’s Midnight Special.
Jeff Nichols got his start as one of the most distinct auteurs to emerge in the mid-2000s, writing and directing Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter, Mud, and the aforementioned Midnight Special. His two most recent features, Loving and this year’s The Bikeriders, both had their roots in true stories, with the latter being adapted from a photo book. On the mixture of projects, Nichols told Deadline, “I’ve been making period pieces and films inspired by other people’s work and this next film for better or worse is going to be cut from Jeff Nichols cloth.”

Jeff Nichols has revealed he is writing his first original work since 2016 sci-fi Midnight Special that will take him back to his native territory of Arkansas, backdrop to early features Shotgun Stories and Mud.
The project is in addition to his adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novels ‘The Passenger’ and its companion ‘Stella Maris’ about siblings living with the knowledge that their father helped develop the atom bomb.
“I am adapting the last two Cormac McCarthy novels but then I am also writing my first original script since Midnight Special, my fourth film,” said Nichols.
Fifth film Loving, about interracial couple Mildred and Richard Loving’s 1960s battle to have their marriage recognized in Virginia, was inspired by Nancy Buirski’s 2011 documentary The Loving Story, while Chicago-based crime drama The Bikeriders was based on Danny Lyon’s book of the same name.

Akira is not only famous in the anime and manga sphere but also pop-culture in general. Critics and movie directors alike refer to Akira as one of the greatest and most influential films of the past 30 years. So it’s no wonder fans discredited Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas for turning the film down because it wouldn’t suit western audiences.
According to Manga Entertainment co-creator Andy Frain, Akira shaped modern sci-fi as people know it today. Films like Midnight Special, Looper, The Matrix, Chronicle, Inception, and even the TV show Stranger Things, all borrowed thematically and stylistically from Akira. In fact, two of those five movies even feature a child with destructive telekinetic powers as one of the main plot points.

Y2K is a horror comedy set during the Y2K panic, starring rising talent like Julian Dennison and Rachel Zegler. Kyle Mooneys alternate-history horror comedy Y2K is led by a stellar ensemble cast featuring such rising stars as Julian Dennison, Jaeden Martell, and Rachel Zegler. The movie marks Mooneys directorial debut from a script he co-wrote with Evan Winter. The story imagines what wouldve happened if Y2K the computer apocalypse that was expected to follow the turn of the year 2000 actually happened. Its told through the lens of a coming-of-age romp set at a high school party held on New Years Eve 1999. Picture This is the End, but with more of a late-90s vibe.

Jack White made a surprise appearance at Newport Folk Fest on Sunday, joining his friend Conan O’Brien to perform “We’re Going to Be Friends.”
The performance came as part of O’Brien’s collaborative set, billed as “Conan O’Brien & Real Musicians,” which also featured appearances from Nick Lowe, Dawes, Brittany Howard, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Mavis Staples.
White, whose friendship with O’Brien dates back more than two decades, was the final guest of the evening. “We’re Going to Be Friends” was an appropriate song selection, as The White Stripes played the track during O’Brien’s final Late Night talk show episode in 2009 (it also proved to be the final live performance of The White Stripes’ career). The song is also used by O’Brien as the soundtrack for his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.

You know what's better than one bikerider? Multiple bikeriders. And what could possibly be better than multiple bikeriders? Well, how about a motley gang of motorcyclists that features Austin Butler in all his smoldering glory, Tom Hardy adding yet another impenetrable voice to his vast cinematic collection, and even Jodie Comer pulling off what is by all accounts an outrageously accurate Midwestern accent? If all of that sounds like a great time, then do I have the movie for you.
Writer/director Jeff Nichols' latest feature, "The Bikeriders," finally debuted earlier this summer to positive reviews after enduring a lengthy strike-related delay that pushed it back from its initial awards-friendly date of December 1, 2023. That probably turned out for the best, however, as an encouraging amount of moviegoers trying to beat the heat helped the film modestly outperform expectations, likely on the strength of Butler's star power, the allure of dusty bike enthusiasts,...

Creative differences led to Jeff Nichols unexpectedly leaving A Quiet Place: Day One project despite being hired as writer/director. Paramount Pictures started fresh with Michael Sarnoski as the new director after Nichols' departure from the prequel movie. A Quiet Place: Day One is a highly anticipated film exploring the origins of the alien invasion with a talented cast including Lupita Nyong'o.
Jeff Nichols, the original director of A Quiet Place: Day One, has revealed what made him leave the project after he had been hired as a writer and director by John Krasinski himself. Unfortunately, due to creative differences, he unexpectedly left the project. After his departure, Paramount Pictures decided to scrap everything and start from zero with writer/director Michael Sarnoski, the director responsible for Nicolas Cage's 2021 thriller Pig.

Michael Shannon "wasn't allowed to get near a motorcycle" on the set of 'The Bikeriders'.The 49-year-old star was one of the few actors who opted not to learn how to ride for Jeff Nichols' new movie, which also stars Austin Butler, Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy. The director laughed on the 'ReelBlend' podcast: “To be honest, all of them had to go through training. Now, some guys took to it better than others. Sadly, for everyone, Michael Shannon wasn’t allowed to get near a motorcycle. We barely let him lean on a motorcycle."The filmmaker previously worked with the actor on 2016 sci-fi saga 'Midnight Special', where Michael's lack of experience behind the wheel was also an issue. He continued: “You know, when we made 'Midnight Special', he didn’t even have a driver’s license.“It was like, we gotta teach Mike how to drive in this chase scene.

Jeff Nichols' new film The Bikeriders features many thrilling sequences of motorcycle mayhem, but the director recently revealed which actor was not allowed to go near one.
The Bikeriders is set in the 1960s, based on Danny Lyon's photobook of the same name, and follows the rise of a Midwestern motorcycle club called the Vandals. The film boasts an incredible cast that includes Jodie Comer (Free Guy), Austin Butler (Elvis), Tom Hardy (Venom), Michael Shannon (Man of Steel), Mike Faist (Challengers), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead). According to Deadline, Nichols gave an interview on the ReelBlend podcast discussing many facets of the film, including the actors needing to learn how to drive the motorcycles. "To be honest, all of them had to go through training. Now, some guys took to it better than others," Nichols said. However, there was a notable exception when it came...

Jeff Nichols' "Alien Nation" remake is still happening, but it won't have the "Alien Nation" title anymore.
In 2016, the writer/director of films like "Mud," "Take Shelter," and "Midnight Special" was tapped to direct a remake of the 1988 film "Alien Nation" by 20th Century Fox. A couple of years later, Nichols gave us an update about the project, explaining that it was set in his home state of Arkansas, would have a $100 million budget, and he referred to it as "epic." But when Disney purchased Fox in 2019, the movie fell by the wayside and it seemed to be dead forever. In early 2021, Nichols revealed that Disney asked him to expand his screenplay into a 10-episode TV series, and at the time, he was awaiting word about whether or not that version would move forward. Then, a few months later, an announcement came out that Nichols was developing an original sci-fi...

Ever since his breakthrough feature Shotgun Stories, Jeff Nichols has been a filmmaker interested in authentic depictions of the human condition. Whether it's the brutal coming-of-age story of Mud, the intimate historical romance of Loving, the subversive superhero mythology of Midnight Special, or the disaster themes of Take Shelter, Nichols is able to take extraordinary premises and ground them in legitimate emotional stakes. Nichols latest feature, The Bikeriders, is a rip-roaring throwback to classic fight the system films like Easy Rider and Rebel Without a Cause, focusing on a defiant motorcycle group in the 1960s. Although it's a film that shows the extent of Nichols imagination, The Bikeriders was loosely inspired by real accounts of the 1960s.

It’s been over seven-and-a-half years since acclaimed filmmaker Jeff Nichols last had a film in movie theaters, and with tonight’s release of The Bikeriders, the interminable wait for his sixth feature is now over. In the aftermath of his two 2016 releases, Midnight Special and Loving, Nichols knew he needed to take a step back and rejuvenate himself, creatively. However, through no fault of his own, his breather became far more prolonged than intended due to a variety of unforeseen circumstances including 2019’s Disney-Fox merger, 2020’s pandemic and 2023’s double strike.
In the case of the Disney-Fox merger that was completed in 2019, it effectively ended Nichols’ four years’ worth of development on his Alien Nation film. The Arkansas native had already been working on an original sci-fi film, but at the urging of 20th Century Fox, he agreed to retrofit his script for the sake of using a recognizable IP as a springboard.

Written by Michael Nilon and directed by Benjamin Brewer, this terrifying post-apocalyptic horror thriller premiered at South by Southwest this past March. It stars Nicolas Cage, Jaeden Martell, Maxwell Jenkins and Sadie Soverall.
In a near future where earth has been decimated by an undisclosed catastrophe, Paul (Cage) barely escapes alive from the city alongside his infant twin boys. Years later, Paul and his teenage sons Joseph (Martell) and Thomas (Jenkins) are living in a remote farmhouse miles away from their nearest neighbours at Rose Farm. During the day, the boys and their father work the land and gather provisions, but at night the threesome are under siege from killer creatures that roam the land.
The trio’s quotidian life of humdrum chores and trying to survive each night at a time, is thrown into chaos when Thomas, the more rebellious of the two brothers, fails to return before nightfall one evening.

Jodie Comer is heading toward disturbing events after signing on to her latest film project with Kenneth Branagh, The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde. Branagh wrote and will direct the new film. Plot details are scarce, but Deadline’s exclusive report says The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde is a contemporary psychological thriller, with production kicking off in August in the UK.
Belfast producers Tamar Thomas, Laura Berwick, Becca Kovacik, Matthew Jenkins, Maximum Effort’s Ashley Fox, and Johnny Pariseau will join Branagh for the new film.

Director Jeff Nichols’ (“Midnight Special”) period biker gang movie “The Bikeriders” is finally making its theatrical debut next month. The New Regency drama faced a little drama last year when Disney’s 20th Century Studios dropped the movie, and Focus Features/Universal Pictures came to the rescue, picking it up for North American release. After teasing the release of the new trailer for the upcoming horror prequel, Paramount has just dropped the official second trailer for A Quiet Place: Day One. The film showcases that fateful day when the invasion began and the people of New York would struggle to deal with a fatal menace that attacks from sounds. The trailer seems to be the same one that was premiered at CinemaCon this year, as the footage matches the description given by our own Lance Vlcek, who was in attendance.
While John Krasinski directed the previous two films, he is producing A Quiet Place: Day One and has passed the helming duties over to Michael Sarnoski, director of the Nicolas Cage drama Pig (watch it Here). Shhh. Do you hear that? That’s the sound of the new teaser for A Quiet Place: Day One. While series creator John Krasinski has opted to do a much more family-friendly fare with the Ryan Reynolds movie If, A Quiet Place has been handed off to some pretty capable hands as Michael Sarnoski steps up to sit in the director’s seat. The new trailer will be dropping sometime tomorrow. However, the official Instagram account for the film and the film’s studio, Paramount, couldn’t wait to tease audiences with this atmospheric, Asmr-esque video which should give you the environment of the invasion as you listen to it with headphones on.

The sci-fi horror A Quiet Place franchise is heading to New York with its latest entry, A Quiet Place: Day One, which is set to reach theatres on June 28th. With the film’s release date just a couple months away, it was no surprise to hear that Paramount was promoting it at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Those in attendance for the Paramount panel today were shown an extended trailer for the film – and JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek was there to tell us what he saw!
Lance sent in the following description of the trailer: “Set in New York. Lupita Nyong’o looks up to see the aliens shooting down to earth as everyone in the city looks at what seems to be meteors raining down. Everything goes wild, chaos in the streets, everyone is getting attacked/killed as Nyong’o hides under a truck. A man tries to hide with her,...

Tom Hardy's new movie The Bikeriders breaks his Rotten Tomatoes dry spell, boasting a solid 83% rating with high praise from critics. Hardy has only starred in two "Rotten" movies from 2008 to 2017, setting an impressive hot streak. Despite box office successes with Venom, Hardy could attain critical acclaim with upcoming projects like Havoc and Mad Max: The Wasteland.
Tom Hardy's new movie The Bikeriders is finally fixing a rotten streak for the celebrated actor. The 46-year-old actor has appeared in some of the most popular and acclaimed films of the last 15 years and continues to be one of the biggest names in Hollywood. However, after the massive success of his hit blockbusters such as Inception (2010), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), and Dunkirk (2017), his most recent movies have not fared as well among critics. Hardy has solidified himself as the face of the modern Venom franchise, which includes two of his highest-grossing movies.

The Bikeriders movie pairs Tom Hardy & Austin Butler, emphasizing their iconic accents that add unique depth to their characters' performances. Tom Hardy's Chicagoan accent for the character Johnny in The Bikeriders stands out more prominently compared to Austin Butler's accent as Benny. Despite the noticeable accents, Tom Hardy's performances in various films show that his unique vocal choices do not detract from his exceptional acting abilities.
The highly-anticipated new movie from Jeff Nichols titled The Bikeriders will pair two actors with a long history of iconic accents, Tom Hardy and Austin Butler. Butler is fresh off the overwhelming box office success of Dune: Part Two, which is already poised to be one of the highest-grossing and critically acclaimed movies of 2024. Butler also stars as Major Gale 'Buck' Cleven in the Apple original WWII series Masters of the Air, in which glimpses of the actor's legendary accent from the 8-time Academy...
