Good but slower than the first season episode

This was a really great first episode. It was mainly just set up and setting the scene. Introducing new character and showing how the dynamics between certain characters has changed.

    What i enjoyed:

Dina is cast perfectly. Isabela Merced is incredible and she works really well with Bella. Their chemistry is so good.

The other casting i really like was Young Mazino as Jessie. He looks and sounds just like the game version.

The introduction of the new types of infected. They did those scenes perfectly and the special effects look really good.

We got to see a lot of new characters, many of whom are not in the game. They are all quite interesting at the moment and i look forward to seeing how they develop.

    What i didnt like:

The pacing of the episode is not as good as i expected it to be. Especially the beginning sequences. After that it wasn't too bad.

Ellie comes off a bit unlikeable in the first episode. As someone who has played the games, I understand why. But for new viewers that may be confused about the sudden shift in emotional tone with Ellie.

Overall, a really great episode that sets the scene for what's to come. I can hardly wait for the next episode.

    The calm before the storm

I thought they did a great job on this episode. Super impressed with the casting of Jesse and Dina, excited to see more of the Abby crew. This episode played out a lot like the game with only some minor differences in the order of things and some additions, which is nice. Hey and we got to see a stalker! I always loved the beginning of the game with the introduction of New Jackson and I feel like the show definitely sucked you in so that you're in their world which is a somewhat peaceful little town and community (except for Seth, he obv needs to chill). If you thought it was on the slow side, there is a reason for that. Ready yourself... the storm is coming. The next episode is going to break you.

The season opener that we feared, not wanted.

Well, after a long 2 year wait TLOU is now back and many of us had our worst fears for the show realized.

Season 1 was a great success despite the understandably controversial casting of Ellie in the form of Bella Ramsey. Despite her version of Ellie being very much so different from the source material, it was serviceable for the young, bratty version of Ellie, albeit a shallow representation to say the least.

But here we are, a half decade later in terms of the storyline and we have the exact same version of Ellie who looks like an underdeveloped 12 year old and hasn't matured a day since season 1.

There are too many complaints to repeat about this but it all centers around that it's simply too much to suspend your disbelief to the point where such a miscast can be overlooked.

While we could get away with this in season 1, it's just too much for season 2.

    Dina So Bad Oml

Wow what a great season opener I had a great time with this. Incredibly accurate to the game it's impressive work. I'm manifesting that Kaitlyn Dever will be an outstanding Abby and give an insanely good performance. I already really liked what we saw of the Wlf crew and I am very intrigued to see how they will adapt certain events. Isabella Merced pleasantly surprised me with how good her Dina is, she really captures her character. Watching that confrontation with Joel at the dance hurts me every time and it still hurts watching it here. It's interesting the way they are structuring this adaptation, what with the timeline and everything. Very excited for the next episode as this was a great episode and I'm sure this season will deliver. Ps Isabella Merced got me acting up in that one scene bro, my word.

    Why?

Writing is disappointing. Why would you give away who Abby is from the very beginning of the episode instead of building her and her team like total strangers and shock the audience with the things they do later on? It was really a bad decision. The game did it better by slowly building everything.

Also the beginning of the game with Joel telling what went down to his little brother was much much better. Writers need to learn when it's not broken they shouldn't try to fix it.

Acting is so flat in this episode like they stopped caring about portraying their characters. Especially Pedro Pascal. Younger ones' acting also feel so.... fake.

They made Ellie annoying. She acts like a spoiled brat, doesn't follow orders and risks the lives of people around her but somehow everyone looks up to her and her friend Dina.... Did Craig Mazin forgot how to write stories? I really hope not.

Also I gotta say it again: portraying a strong female character doesn't mean they need to have a scene where they beat a man twice their size. It comes out so fake and cringe especially knowing that the skinny Ellie in the game hides and carefully and slowly hunts down her enemies Of course you can go full action with her but especially after playing as Abby you can easily tell which character the developers made for stealth gameplay and which is made for action gameplay.

It feels sad knowing that this episode could have turned out helluva lot better but the writing, directing and acting really took a few steps back from the 1st season.

I'm gonna watch the next episode too just to see the notorious Golfing scene, and then maybe I'll continue, I don't know, I'll see.

    • Trivia
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who grew close during production of the first season, considered the separation of their characters Joel and Ellie "painful" and "lonelier" during filming for the second, though Pascal considered it "a very relatable fissure in relationships between parent and child". Pascal found Joel's "stubborn paralysis" fuel by fear of losing Ellie forced him to become vulnerable, which helped him address exhaustion in his own life.
    • Goofs
When Ellie is target shooting at infected, there is a noticeable delay between her firing the rifle and the bullet hitting the target, it takes at least two seconds after the gun fires for the bullet to hit, and in the head no less. In order for that long of a delay the shooter would have to be at extreme range, too far for someone with Ellie's training & experience, especially with the type of rifle she's using. Ellie has a Springfield M1A which can fire the .308 Winchester round and its military counterpart the 7.62x51mm NATO, it uses a shorter 18-22 inch barrel depending on the model, and is designed for close to medium range targets up to 400-600 yards distant. The average military ammo load has a muzzle velocity of about 2,860 feet per second, and a 1,000 yard velocity of about 1,230 fps, it would take 1.83 seconds for a bullet to travel 1,000 yards assuming there was no wind; a full 2 seconds would place the target at more like 1,150 yards. 1,000 yards is considered well beyond the effective range of a .308 in the hands of a typical experienced shooter, even in longer barrel sniper rifles. Both the U.S. Army & Marine Corps, plus Naval Special Warfare, list its maximum effective range against a human target to be 500 yards for a typical military trained shooter and about 800 yards for snipers. Only highly experienced, expert long range marksman would be able to hit a target at 1,100 yards with a .308, and only special forces snipers would be capable of making a head-shot at that distance.

Gail: Your turn. Say the thing you're afraid to say. I can help you. Say it out loud, no matter what it is, no matter how bad. I promise, I will help. Did you do something to her?

      [Joel shakes his head]

      Gail: Did you hurt her?

      Joel Miller: No, no.

Gail: Then, what? What did you do?

Joel Miller: [after a moment of looking conflicted, stiffens and stands up] I saved her.
