    coming-out dramedy

A latest South Korean comedy (not exclusively since the title is overtly giving away that a funeral is looming around) about a bogus marriage between a gay boy and a lesbian girl, with motley sidekick groups of family members and an utterly effeminate bunch of queers.

Squeezing by the contemporary social prejudice, the film conventionally put its weight on the male side: the pressure of coming out; the escapism of relocating in another place far away from family and compatriots; the humiliation, embarrassment induced to the family after outing, and the perpetual contention of the dilemma between outing and covering up. With an asymmetrical angle. being a lesbian might omit much of the said drama as long as one has a tough nerve.

Coming out is never an easy piece of cake, particularly in the Asian environment, that's why the boldness of the team is commendable, although the attempt to carry on both the comedic ingredient and the melodramatic tragedy into a balanced comfort zone has never been effectively consummated, as times, the film has fallen into a self-consciously awkward anticlimax which may be engendered by an uneven cast (the leading male Dong-yun Kim occasionally is paper-thin in manifesting a sympathizing performance when the film needs it; while against all odds, a sissy but hearty Jeongpyo Park is the saving grace from the cast) and a tedious procedure of predictability of the anticipated story-going.

Unquestionably the film has utilized all the possible set pieces (whether to spark laughter or tear) to embellish the ultra starry-eyed fairytale, the discussion at the funeral is thoroughly rib- ticking and off-the-wall, but the final product is too TV-series-ish to be perceive as a sincere crowd-pleaser, as least not on a large scale.

    Superb Asian movie!

I usually have lower expectations for Asian LGBT movies because movies are the reflection of a culture, and many Asian cultures are not as open as most western cultures are. I already knew that South Korea was one of those "not-very-open" Asian cultures, but the movie also makes it very clear in the beginning. But don't get misled by this! Even though their culture is not open, most characters of the movie are openly gay/lesbian and the environment in the movie revolves around this subject too. So, if you are interested by Asian/South Korean LGBT community and feel like watching a drama with some good pieces of comedy in it, this movie is an awesome portrait of their community to the whole world.

    Lighthearted but not shallow

Lighthearted but rather sombre at times, this Korean movie is about two gay couples that get involved in a fake marriage. The handsome guy in the black suit and the long-haired girl are doctors, and they get married so that he can ease the pressure to find someone from his family, and so that she can adopt her child (which she isn't allowed to do as a lesbian couple). The male couple is the focus in the movie, but the female couple makes humorous appearances.

I thought the main actor was super cute! He was such a bumbling fool that took a while to realize that the fake marriage was only a short- term solution. His partner in comparison, is a lot more self- assured. The female lead is really funny, and her partner is one of the comic reliefs in this movie, I swear. She's so cool.

Of course the "funeral" might give it away; but I saw the death coming a mile away. Overall a great movie and a great watch if you're looking for a sweet ending. (:

A hilarious comedy with affirming messages

This film is about a gay man and a lesbian woman getting married in order to hide their respective homosexual relationships.

"Two Weddings and a Funeral" has many emotional moments, but hilarious laugh out loud scenes are more abundant. It tells how the two leading characters marry to put on a facade for the intolerant society. This sad topic is approached from a lighthearted perspective, as their facade erodes from within and out. The supporting cast is a stereotypically camp group of individuals, but the play on stereotypes come across is really funny and not offensive at all. There is a scene that made the whole cinema roaring with laughter, and it involves two guys in bed but their fun abruptly stops. I also like the funeral scene where there is a joke regarding a secret lover. The filmmakers manages to make a serious scene funny, but right after that the camera pans to the grieving mother which abruptly changes the atmosphere again.

The ending is very moving and emotional. It compresses a lot of emotions into a short space of time. It tells of self acceptance, friendship, love, guilt and having courage to live a life that is true to oneself. It has many affirming messages in the hilarious plot and a lighthearted approach. I really enjoyed watching "Two Weddings and a Funeral". Watch it if you have the chance.
