The episode caused some controversy because there was not a single mention of Jan Breydel, another Brugian freedom fighter who has always been closely associated with the Flandres liberation movement and the battle of Kortrijk. However, many historians claim that Breydel's part in the uprising has been exaggerated by later writers, as there is no evidence that he was one of the captains of the rebels, or that he had actually fought during the battle (some sources even claim that his family later defected to the enemy). The makers have stated that Breydel was originally part of the script, but later omitted for several reasons.
