This movie doesn't need specific critiquing. My caption spoke volumes. The movie could have gone somewhere with an able support cast. I do believe the positive reviews were written by people related to the movie.
When the villain was revealed, it rapidly turned into a comedy. The acting of supposed hillbillies was so poor, they couldn't be taken seriously. The fact that those two were abducting children made the movie only more unbearable. I don't see how anyone could see them in a role, other than not talking. The keystone cops were just as stereotypical and hardly felt like true law enforcement. They were no-name actors dressed as policemen.
This movie could've been produced far better. There is a little to no character development. You couldn't even have any sympathy for the lead actor. He was your typical married man who cheats on his wife with someone from work. The chemistry between them was promising at the beginning, The attempts to make him appear sympathetic or genuine, fell short.
I would suggest South Korean movies. Start with,The Wailing.
The storyline was engaging, but SO many details were overlooked, beginning with the redneck cops' premise that the boyfriend must be the killer because he writes horror novels. The most obvious and laughable film faux pas was the terrible makeup job on the little boys. ¡Ay carumba! I have seen better during neighborhood Halloween outings. And back to the cops: they searched the property, forgetting to look in the basement? Hmm. In one of the last scenes, in the graveyard, you can clearly see one of the production crew in a yellow vest in the background, too.
Well, I made it through the movie, because I had to see how it ended. I love horror movies, and despite the amateurish flaws, this was engaging. I was happy with the ending, predictable as it was, so there was that! Its worth a watch, maybe with a good sense of humor.
