‘Jeopardy!’ Finally Gets Big Winner After Long Stretch Of Poor Play
Image
The Jeopardy! producers were discussing how to fill the Tournament of Champions. There were not enough automatic qualifiers to make the lineup. They didn’t even have enough four-game winners, so they had to drop to three-game winners to add names. However, one more is coming late, and there is a new five-game winner this season.

Here is a look at Laura Faddah and how she finally broke the rough patch on Jeopardy! this season.

Laura Faddah Reaches Five Wins On Jeopardy!

It takes five wins for a Jeopardy! contestant to automatically qualify for the Tournament of Champions. However, the show can invite people with four wins if there are not enough five-game winners. This season, though, was so bad that they had to drop to three-game winners, and might have needed a second chance runner-up to fill up the ToC this year.

Amy Adams' New Movie Is Dangerously Close To Continuing A Rotten Tomatoes Trend 6 Years After Her Last Oscar Nomination
Image
Amy Adams' new movie, Nightbitch, is very close to continuing a negative Rotten Tomatoes streak for the Oscar-nominated actor. Amy Adams is one of the most popular actors in the world, having starred in movies like American Hustle, Arrival, and Nocturnal Animals. However, Adams has been on a streak of poorly reviewed movies recently. In her newest movie, Nightbitch, Adams plays a stay-at-home mother who starts experiencing strange transformations, leading her to believe she is turning into a dog.

In addition to Adams, the cast of Nightbitch includes Scoot McNairy, Zoe Chao, Marry Holland, and Kerry O'Malley. Clearly, Nightbitch has one of the most unique premises out of any Amy Adams movie. However, while reviews for Nightbitch were initially quite strong, its Rotten Tomatoes score has been dropping. If it continues to fall, Nightbitch will continue Amy Adams' streak of starring in movies that struggle to resonate with audiences.

Jessica Alba's New Netflix Action Thriller Can't Break Actor's Dismal Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
Jessica Alba's Trigger Warning receives a low Tomatometer score, continuing her streak of critical failures. The Netflix thriller stars Alba as a Special Forces operator in a bar takeover amidst gang warfare. Despite Trigger Warning boasting a quality cast, it fails to break Alba's decade-long Rotten streak.

Trigger Warning isn't enough to save Jessica Alba from an increasingly damning Rotten Tomatoes streak. The latest Netflix thriller stars Alba as a Special Forces operator struggling against brutal gang warfare after taking over her late father's bar. It was released on June 21. Trigger Warning's extensive cast is filled with respectable actors, including Alba, Anthony Michael Hall, Mark Webber, and Jake Weary. Unfortunately, it does not appear to have thrilled critics.

While Alba undoubtedly hoped for positive results, her latest movie is another critical disaster. It is Alba's eighth movie in a row that failed to earn a positive Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Future of Netflix Might Be Interactive TV, and It’s Already Here
The concept of Choose-Your-Own-Adventure storytelling isn’t a new one; just ask any ’80s kid who grew up reading the classic book series, where you jumped from section to section based on your own decisions. But Netflix has now evolved the experience off the page and on the screen — taking advantage of the streaming model in new ways for TV storytelling.

The animated young adult series “Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters” recently debuted a special episode titled “The Breakout,” in which the three heroes at the core of the series have to track down a number of escaped villains causing chaos in their city.

“The Breakout” features an impressive voice cast, including Clancy Brown, Yvette Nicole Brown, Gary Cole, Keith David, Will Friedle, Kelly Hu, Walter Koenig, Kate Mulgrew, Wil Wheaton, and Steven Yeun, but more importantly there’s a twist to the action — watch it on your computer or via select devices,...

Tom Hanks, who voices Woody, was among the first to express his condolences. "A God died today," he tweeted. "Don Rickles, we did not want to ever lose you. Never." Blumhouse and the risks of original genre filmmaking
Mark Harrison Mar 17, 2017

As Get Out arrives in UK cinemas off its hugely successful Us debut, we look at the growing hit factor that is Blumhouse...

This article contains spoilers for Split.

It feels as if the more expensive a film is, the fewer risks the studio will allow. There are perks to having a bigger budget, but often, a low budget either allows or forces filmmakers to be more creative. As tentpoles and franchise properties fill up the movie calendar, producer Jason Blum's company Blumhouse Productions has reintroduced a little risk into Hollywood with its tried-and-tested production model.

Blumhouse is primarily known for horror films, but they dabble in a number of different genres, producing independent films on budgets of no more than $10 million, and usually under $5m, and then distributing them through the studio system. They emerged with the massive success of the micro-budgeted Paranormal Activity series...

X-Force Film Gets A Director & Reynolds To Co-Write
Cb is reporting that an inside source has found a director for the future X-Force film, and don't expect to be blown away with his resume. Joe Carnahan has been hired, likely due to the fact that he will willingly work with Ryan Reynolds. Carnahan is best know for directing, producing, and writing the screenplay for The Grey. In addition, he directed Smokin' Aces, The A-Team, 3 episodes of The Blacklist, and Stretch, and also wrote a video short that sounds delicious named Taco Heaven.

Both Carnahan and Ryan Reynolds will co-write the movie, and with Deadpool 2 expected to arrive in 2018, one could assume a 2020 release date, but no further information has been given. At this point, all that is known about the actors appearing in the movie is that Ryan Reynolds will star in it.

Cable and Domino are set to appear in Deadpool 2, so considering they are...

Jackie Chan Set to Star in Joe Carnahan's New Action Film Five Against A Bullet
Jackie Chan is set to star in a new action movie called Five Against A Bullet, which is being developed by Joe Carnahan. Carnahan is the absolutely crazy director that has brought us films such as Smokin' Aces, The A-Team, The Grey, and Stretch. The guy has a tendency to do some insane things in his movies, so the fact that Chan is teaming up with him for an action movie makes complete sense.

Carnahan has been working on this project since 2014, and the story is set in a small Mexican town that is under attack by a drug cartel. It follows five "world-weary bodyguards who are signed on to protect a Mexican politician after his father is murdered by a cartel, ahead of an election."

Jackie Chan is set to play one of these bodyguards, and there's no doubt we'll get to see him involved in some incredibly badass fight sequences and stunts.

Uncharted Movie Roars Back to Life with New Writer Joe Carnahan
Joe Carnahan
After nearly seven years in development, Sony's Uncharted movie adaptation is moving forward once again. The studio has brought on writer-director Joe Carnahan to write the script for this video game adaptation, but unfortunately he won't be directing at this time. The filmmaker stated that he would love to direct this project "in a perfect world," but right now, he's only set to write the script.

The last we heard about this project was in June 2015, when Seth Gordon dropped out as the director. Variety reports that Joe Carnahan's involvement with Sony's Bad Boys 3, which starts filming early next year after Will Smith wraps on Bright, makes the filmmaker unavailable to direct. Here's what Joe Carnahan told the site about this project.

"In a perfect world I would love to do both, but right now, I'm only on board to write the script. Archaeology today is in itself an antiquity,...

One of the steps they are taking is to bring us new episodes of Samurai Jack. David Hasselhoff and Dwayne Johnson Team-Up in New 'Baywatch' Photos
David Hasselhoff
Earlier this month, Dwayne Johnson sent out a new video from the Baywatch set, which revealed that the original Mitch Buchannon, David Hasselhoff, has come aboard for a role in the movie. Since Dwayne Johnson has taken over the Mitch Buchannon role, we still don't know anything about who David Hasselhoff is playing. But today we got our first glimpse of The Hoff on the set, thanks to photos sent out through social media by The Rock, Zac Efron and David Hasselhoff himself. Bruce Willis To Star In Death Wish Remake From Big Bad Wolves Directors
Aside from raiding his own back catalogue for titles to reboot (ahem, Die Hard), Bruce Willis now turns to Charles Bronson’s. The classic action franchise Death Wish is in Willis’ sights, as Deadline reports he plans to lead the Paramount/MGM remake.

Now, it might be a good idea to take this with a pinch of salt, as a proposed revival of the revenge flick has been bouncing around for years now. In fact, Joe Carnahan (Stretch) was attached to direct at one point – oh, what joy that would have been! Alas, he skipped out, and passed the torch onto Gerardo Naranjo (Miss Bala), who is now being replaced by Big Bad Wolves directors Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado. There’s no word on whether early drafts by Graham Yost (TV’s Justified) or Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) are still in play, but we’ll likely find out soon.

David Hasselhoff Is Returning in the 'Baywatch' Movie
Dwayne Johnson
Ever since Baywatch started moving forward with star Dwayne Johnson, there were rumors that roles had been written for the two stars of the original TV series, David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson. Most assumed that Pamela Anderson most likely won't be back, after revealing in August that "no one appreciates the remakes," but we never heard one way or another if David Hasselhoff will return. Last night, Dwayne Johnson shared a video on his Instagram page, revealing that David Hasselhoff is in fact coming aboard. Joe Carnahan To Helm "Bad Boys 3"?
Blowing many people away with the Liam Neeson survival drama and masculinity deconstructionism study that is 2011's "The Grey," filmmaker Joe Carnahan has since kept fairly quiet - helming several pilots and TV episodes for shows like "The Blacklist" and "State of Affairs" along with tackling the little seen dark comedy feature "Stretch".

Now though he may be coming back to film in a very big way. Collider reports that it's looking like Carnahan is directing "Bad Boys 3". At last report back in June the helmer was in talks to write a new draft and possibly the direct the third installment of the action franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

Carnahan stopped short of confirming those reports at that time. This week though he's shared a pre-vis image from pre-production on the film which teases his likely sitting in the director's chair. If so, Carnahan would take over...

Filming sex scenes: 13 directors and their approaches
facebook

Film directors and their crew discuss the techniques and approaches to capturing fruitiness on the big (and small) screen...

John Badham has written a couple of excellent books where he passed on advice about directing movies, and the lessons he's learned across his own career. In the latest, John Badham On Directing, he raises the spectre of filming sex scenes, and the problems that ensue.

Actors get really spooked when it comes to intimacy in a scene, even kissing", he wrote. "This is where the director has to be extremely patient with the actors and know that the emotional or intimate part of scenes don’t always shoot as easily as the production department thinks they should. The actors are not robots on a Toyota assembly line".

But just how do different filmmakers approach putting intimacy on film? In lots of different ways, is the answer...

Box Office Sabermetrics: Blumhouse’s VOD Gamble on ‘Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension”
The final chapter of the Paranormal Activity franchise, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, was released in theaters on October 23rd. My friend and I planned on catching a late showing the previous night, but to our dismay discovered it wasn’t actually playing anywhere near us. How could the final film in a cash-printing horror franchise not be in even our nearest theater? How does that happen?

Blumhouse, the production company behind the franchise and other low budget horror hits, is making a surprisingly bold move by putting the film on VOD just weeks after debuting it theatrically. When they announced this, several theater chains decided that they would not screen the film, fearing that VOD business would cut into their profits. This caused a significant drop in the amount of theaters that The Ghost Dimension would play in, which would also cause a significant drop in the amount of...

Zipper Review
The plight of the over-privileged is becoming one of The most insufferable dramatic tools of today’s current cinematic landscape, and if this year’s The Runner didn’t satiate your appetite for sex-obsessed politicians, Mora Stephens’ Zipper brings more of the same. What’s a political thriller without a bit of secret canoodling, right?

The problem with Zipper is that there’s very little reason for yet another happy family man to turn into some sadistic, objectifying sex-fiend, and even less motivation when considering the defaming implications that could come out of any guilty admittance. But apparently this is what makes lawyers and politicians who they are – sleaziness, dishonesty, abuse, and a need to bang anything that stands on two legs. At this point, it seems less like a poor decision and more like a job qualification, according to Hollywood.

Patrick Wilson plays D.A. Sam Ellis, a fast-talking...

Patrick Wilson Plays a Sex-Addicted Politician in Trailer for 'Zipper'
"I set out to help people, I never said I was better than them..." Alchemy has debuted the trailer for the sex thriller Zipper, which dramatizes the sexual urges of a man on the cusp of a bright future. Patrick Wilson stars as a politician on the rise who ends up losing everything "due to his inability to fight off his obsessive temptation for other women." This is a thriller because they really play up the angle of "look how deadly this can be to your life!" with all the endless infidelity. The cast also includes Lena Headey, Dianna Agron, Alexandra Breckenridge, Richard Dreyfuss, John Cho and Ray Winstone. This looks interesting, but at the same time I'd kind of rather just go back and watch Joe Carnahan's Stretch again. Give it a watch. Here's the first official trailer for Mora Stephens' Zipper, in high def on Apple...

Joe Carnahan is Eying 'Bad Boys 3'c I'm In
As a fan of Joe Carnahan's work -- Narc, Stretch, Smokin' Aces, The Grey -- I'm pretty much up for whatever he's working on next and the idea of him stepping in for Michael Bay and taking over the Bad Boys franchise sounds like something right up his alley. Word from Deadline is Carnahan has been brought on to take a pass at David Guggenheim's script for a Bad Boys 3 with eyes at possibly directing. The goal is to have the project ready for Will Smith to consider as soon as he's done shooting Suicide Squad with David Ayer. Considering Smith could use a couple big hits after After Earth and the modest returns for Focus, I have to imagine he'd be up for returning to one of his most popular franchise and I think we all know Martin Lawrence is in. In fact, Lawrence was on...

Joe Carnahan May End Up Writing & Directing 'Bad Boys 3' for Sony
Well this is big news for Joe Carnahan. Word from Deadline is that Joe Carnahan, who last directed the film Stretch, is looking at taking over Bad Boys 3 in development at Sony Pictures. They say that Carnahan is "in early talks to do a quick pass to possibly direct". That means that he's going to revise the script, and maybe direct, Bad Boys 3 next for the studio. The first two Bad Boys movies starring Will Smith & Martin Lawrence were directed by Michael Bay, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, when this group was actually delivering great action movies. We're been hearing about a Bad Boys 3 for a while, with Lawrence saying it's close to happening as of late last year. This might be the final piece of the puzzle, with things moving fast. The original Bad Boys first hit in 1995, and 2003, eight years apart. And they're actually awesome action movies,...

Mark Millar Teases Nemesis Movie
Mark Millar, creator of Wanted and Kick-Ass, has taken to Facebook to tease fans about another long, long, Long gestating adaptation.

Nemesis has been floating around for years now with various figures attached at different stages, and through a sly post to his social media hub, Millar has kickstarted that craze again.

Post by Mark Millar.

Post by Mark Millar.

For those who are unaware, the comic revolves around a philanthropic billionaire who uses his technological prowess and bags of cash to fight for what’s right! And what’s right to him is pretty much pursuing every violent and sordid whim to its fullest, without any regard for who gets in the way of his selfish endeavors. There’s a reason the character has been dubbed “Batman meets the Joker.”

At one stage, Joe Carnahan was incredibly interested in directing. He even penned a script that Millar himself showered with praise.

Exclusive: Jason Blum Confirms Oren Peli’s Area 51 Is Finished And Will Be Released…Someday
Over a year and a half ago, I talked to super-producer Jason Blum while he was at the press junket for Insidious: Chapter 2. While there, I brought up a little flick called Area 51, which Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli had already been working on for a rather long time. It was at this point that Jason told me that Oren was still “futzing” with the film, and that it was still in post-production even all those years later.

Fast-forward a year and a half, to today, and I had the chance to meet with Jason again to talk Unfriended (which I reviewed last night) at South by Southwest. Of course, I wanted an Area 51 update from the producer. Surely Oren couldn’t still be “futzing,” could he?

Here’s what Jason had to say about the state of Peli’s long-awaited second feature:

“The movie is officially done.

Directors: Joe Carnahan Leads 'Motorcade,' 'Toy Story 4' Gets A Co-Director & More
Joe Carnahan ("Stretch," "The Grey") is revving up the long dormant "Motorcade" for DreamWorks. At one time eyed by Tom Cruise, and a few years ago slated to star Ryan Reynolds, with a script from Billy Ray (indeed, his is the most recent draft), the thriller has a bunch of terrorists attacking the President's motorcade during a trip to Los Angeles. Four-wheel Drive Down! We'll see if Carnahan will finally be the guy to get this movie off the ground. [Variety] John Lasseter won't be going it alone with "Toy Story 4." Pixar veteran Josh Cooley, who has credits on "The Incredibles," "Cars," "Ratatouille," and "Up," has graduated to the co-director's chair on the sequel. There's no word yet on plot details, except that it will be a "romantic comedy" and not tied to the original trilogy. [via Empire] "Mama" director Andy Muschietti will be behind the the big screen adaptation of...

Joe Carnahan Is Going To Terrorize The President
Joe Carnahan, one of the most ballsy directors doing his thing at the minute, has decided on his next project after hitting so many stumbling blocks on getting his last movie, Stretch, distributed. Motorcade will see Carnahan return to directing for a studio, namely Dreamworks, in a movie that was probably pitched as Olympus Has Fallen on wheels. When Potus is attacked as he makes his way across Los Angeles, the only person who can save him is a disgraced former Secret Service agent (naturally) who is in the wrong place at the right time. Carnahan's CV suggest he's perfect for this, considering the vehicular mayhem in Stretch, The A-Team and the all out action of Smokin' Aces. If it were up to me I'd throw all of the budget at getting The Rock on board and push for a hard 18's proper action movie. Let us know who you...

Joe Carnahan Will Conduct DreamWorks’ Motorcade
Joe Carnahan has been tapped to write and direct Motorcade for DreamWorks, a project that the studio has had in the works for over a decade.

The thriller will center on a Secret Service agent who fails to stop a deadly and vicious attack on the President of the United States as he rides in a motorcade.

Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell originally pitched the pic to DreamWorks back in 2004, and the studio picked it up for a modest sum. Over the years, writers Ehren Kruger, Billy Ray and Robert Rodat have all circled for rewrites, and Jon Cassar was at one point attached to direct, but somehow Motorcade has yet to be made. Carnahan, though, is expected to take it on as his next project.

The helmer last made comic thriller Stretch, starring Patrick Wilson, for Blumhouse, which eventually tabled its release and quietly sent it on to Netflix,...

Joe Carnahan Will Direct 'Motorcade' for DreamWorks
Joe Carnahan
After languishing in development for more than a decade, DreamWorks is finally moving forward with their thriller Motorcade, bringing on Joe Carnahan to write the script and direct. The story follows a terrorist attack on the U.S. President's motorcade as he travels through Los Angeles. We first reported on the project back in November 2004, when DreamWorks picked up the pitch from writers Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell (Highwaymen).

The project has attracted plenty of top-notch talent throughout the years, with Tom Cruise being eyed to star at one point, and filmmakers such as Jon Cassar and Len Wiseman circling the project as well. The story was previously set in New York City, but the most recent version of the script by Billy Ray is set in L.A. No further story details were given at this time.

Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will executive produce, although no production schedule was given.

Joe Carnahan Set to Direct One Time Possible Tom Cruise Starrer 'Motorcade'
Before Tom Cruise decided to star in Knight & Day for James Mangold he was considering several projects. One was The Tourist, which Johnny Depp ultimately took, another was The Matarese Circle, which would have put him alongside Denzel Washington with David Cronenberg directing and the other was Motorcade, a thriller that was, at the time, to be directed by Len Wiseman, who instead went on to direct the Total Recall reboot. Looking at those options, it seems Cruise made the best choice for the time, but Motorcade never really died and Dreamworks is now ready to bring it back to life. It was just announced Joe Carnahan has been brought aboard to direct the thriller which pits the U.S. president against terrorists who commandeer his motorcade on the streets of Los Angeles and Carnahan is bringing along his Smokin' Aces star Ryan Reynolds to play a disgraced Secret Service...

Joe Carnahan Set To Drive Motorcade
Coming off issues getting his insane action comedy Stretch out into the world (and having more success producing and directing TV shows), Joe Carnahan is adding another studio film to his list of potential movies. According to Variety, he’s now made a deal to direct Motorcade for DreamWorks. The plot for the high concept thriller finds a disgraced Secret Service agent in the right place at the right time when terrorists attack the Us President’s motorcade in Los Angeles. Though it sounds like someone watched Olympus Has Fallen and thought, ‘hhhm… I wonder if we could do that… But in a car!’ Motorcade has actually been stalled in development for years, going through various different versions since at least 2008. At one point, Tom Cruise was attached to star, and Ryan Reynolds briefly flirted with the idea back in 2009. But producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald have stayed the...

The Office Star David Denham Will Pick Up The Rifle For Michael Bay’s 13 Hours
Michael Bay’s predilection for explosions will be shifting their focus from the robo-orgy leanings of his Transformers franchise to a serious adaptation of real life events. 13 Hours is based on the Libyan shootings of September 2012, which left the U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans dead after Islamic militants attacked a U.S. compound.

Bay’s movie will chronicle the story of six members of a militarized security team, who attempted to rescue the Americans stationed at the U.S. State Department Special Mission Compound in Benghazi. Already enlisted to play the security team are John Krasinski (also of The Office), James Badge Dale (Stretch, Parkland), Max Martini (Pacific Rim) and Pablo Schreiber (Orange Is The New Black).

Fresh off a stint on Parenthood, which recently wrapped its final season, and a small, supporting role on True Detective season 2, David Denham will join the above crew.

The tyranny of Netflix: you must watch this movie. Now!
Thanks to video-on-demand, films never go away any more – so when I tell you to watch a weird Austrian cowboy movie, I expect you do it. This week

Netflix and video-on-demand and Hulu have created immense new pressures on hardcore movie lovers. In the olden days you could tell a friend, “You just have to see House of Games; it’s the best scam movie of the year!” or “I will not stop badgering you until you see Nine Queens! It’s the best South American scam movie of the year!”

And back in the olden days people would reply: “Yeah, sure, I’ll get to it when I get to it.” But then the film would end its theatrical run, so your friends had a legitimate excuse to ignore you. They would assure you that they would get around to seeing that Argentine movie about the bank robber with...

Margot Robbie Makes The Most Of The Apocalypse In First Z For Zachariah Clip
As Craig Zobel’s adaptation, Z For Zachariah, gears up for its debut this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, a peek at the first footage from the movie has landed in the above clip. Courtesy of Hitfix (via Live For Films), the brief segment offers a look at the leading trio – Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine – having a laugh in a post-apocalyptic America.

Zobel, who previously helmed the eerie Compliance, adapted the movie from the 1974 novel by Robert C. O’Brien. Set “in the wake of a disaster that wipes out most of civilization,” Robbie plays Ann Burden, a young woman who has spent a year following that disaster alone in a valley untouched by its devastation. After a lone scientist kitted out in a radiation suit stumbles upon her homestead, she is forced to deal with his arrival… until a second man turns up and further complicates matters.
