Film is so back. Shooting on Kodak film continues to be both a more popular choice among filmmakers and to gather more Oscar prestige. At this year’s Academy Awards Sean Baker’s Best Picture winner, “Anora,” was shot on 35mm by cinematographer Drew Daniels; Brady Corbet’s Best Cinematography winner, “The Brutalist,” was shot on 35mm VistaVision to great aplomb by Dp Lol Crawley; Walter Salles’ Best International Feature Film winner, “I’m Still Here,” was shot on both 35mm and S8mm by cinematographer Adrian Teijido; and the Best Live Action Short winner, “I’m Not a Robot,” was also shot on 35mm.
This year looks set to build on that success. There will be a cohort of prominent movies captured on film from some of the usual analog-loving directors: Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt,” Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia,” Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme,...

Even a Hollywood dynasty gets tired of rewatching their iconic films.
“The Last Showgirl” director Gia Coppola, whose grandfather is iconic auteur Francis Ford Coppola, said during Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast that she had to eventually watch “The Godfather” with one of her pals since no one in her family was willing to revisit it with her.
Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather,” which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, spurred two sequels, concluding with 1990’s “The Godfather: Part III.” Yet it took Gia Coppola a few decades to even get to see the first feature.
“I haven’t seen ‘Godfather’ until much later in my life because there was like a lot of pressure and intimidation,” Gia Coppola said, “but also all my family had sort of been a part of it and seen it, so no one really wanted to re watch that with me.

The conversation about nepotism in the film industry has been going on for decades, with multiple "nepo babies" addressing whether they like the title or not. In Andie MacDowell's case, she's experiencing "reverse nepotism."
The actress has been acting for over four decades, but she's experiencing a new wave of recognition not thanks to her many rom-coms but her daughter, Margaret Qualley. Qualley's breakout role was in Gia Coppola's 2013 Palo Alto, with an appearance in 2019's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, but 2024 was huge for her thanks to her role in The Substance. Plot: When the glittering Las Vegas revue she has headlined for decades announces it will soon close, a glamorous showgirl must reconcile with the decisions she’s made and the community she has built as she plans her next act.
Review: A lot of press has surrounded Pamela Anderson’s role in The Last Showgirl. After returning to acting in 2022 with a stint in a Broadway production of Chicago, Anderson released her memoir Love, Pamela and a corresponding Netflix documentary in 2023. With Lily James portraying Anderson in the Hulu limited series Pam & Tommy, Anderson has again entered the pop culture limelight, with many hailing The Last Showgirl as the actress’s revelatory rebirth as a dramatic actress. Directed by Gia Coppola, The Last Showgirl is an intriguing and devastating look at a fading aspect of Las Vegas and a stark portrait of a woman reflecting on the missed opportunities in her life.

When Pamela Anderson was announced as the star of Gia Coppola’s third film, “The Last Showgirl,” the stage was set for a massive career resurgence for the one-time “Baywatch” star. That the film — which sees Anderson taking on a full-bodied, deeply emotional role as a fading Las Vegas dancer — would alter the trajectory of Anderson’s life and career was never really in doubt, but the fruits of Coppola’s latest have been profound for the star.

The Last Showgirl is set to hit theaters next month, and for Pamela Anderson, landing the starring role in Gia Coppolas drama was a "life or death" moment for her. Anderson stars as Shelley, a seasoned showgirl who is faced with uncertainty after her Las Vegas show abruptly closes, leaving her to question what comes next. In a way, the movie mirrors her own life, as Anderson rose to stardom thanks to Baywatch, and has since struggled to find her footing in both her career and in life.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly ahead of The Last Showgirls theatrical debut on Dec. 13, Anderson said that upon reading the script penned by Kate Gersten, she immediately knew she had to say yes to the part, if for no other reason than that no one else was eager to feature her in a movie. She hasnt been seen on the big screen since 2022s Alone at Night,...

In his Ama on r/movies, director and co-writer Ethan Berger gamely answered a couple dozen thirsting filmmakers about how he got his script for “The Line” (2023) produced. This is the part where I tell you what he said. And, I must warn you. If you are a filmmaker who wants something produced, you may be disappointed. We always are. We are disappointed because Ethan Berger wrote, in far more humble terms, what they always write: that the actors loved the script.
So, I went into this viewing, of a screener on my television, knowing this. Oh, brother. We got a big great script coming up. Arms folded, on the attack. Thinks he’s Schrader, over here… Well, the script is fabulous. The cast, including Alex Wolff, Austin Abrams, and Halle Bailey, burst off the screen. Suitably ravenous. Outside of the obsessively designed world of Ari Aster’s “Hereditary,” Mr.

With the presidential race slowly approaching its end, Donald Trump recently decided that it would be an incredible idea to spend a day in the life of a minimum wage worker at McDonald’s. The BBC posted a video of the former president cooking up some tasty-looking fries to serve customers while even stating that he liked what he did. Trump also expressed his desire to return to an outlet of the fast-food restaurant and work again.

The Substance's tight focus on its central cast benefits the dark horror satire about the entertainment industry. Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, The Substance is focused on an aging actor celebrity who finds herself without a job after being forced out of her TV show. Desperate to regain her notoriety, she reluctantly starts using a mysterious black market drug that creates a second younger version of herself. The Substance is largely focused on the back-and-forth that erupts between the two versions of the celebrity, steadily exposing their internal fears and darker impulses.
The film maintains its focus primarily on its lead character, Elisabeth. An aging star who fears her golden days are behind her, Elisabeth decision to embrace the Substance as a solution to her problems only sets her up for far more horrifying results. The main cast of the body horror film The Substance is limited to only three actors,...

Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl is a dreamy, melancholy portrait of a veteran Las Vegas dancer reeling from the news that her career has hit its expiration date. The movie is as gossamer-thin as the wings that the title character, Shelly — played by Pamela Anderson with an undiluted sense of heartbreak — keeps tearing on her stage costume. The story more often drifts than advances, favoring ambience over substance in a few too many wordless sequences observing Shelly wandering or dancing or just staring into the abyss in sun-blasted parking lots, on rooftops and streets, bathed in lens flare and the shimmering score of Andrew Wyatt.

Margaret Qualley's breakout potential from Once Upon A Time In Hollywood wasn't fully realized. Despite notable projects, Qualley has yet to reach stardom. Qualley's upcoming role in Kinds of Kindness could elevate her career and push her into the Oscars conversation.
One upcoming 2024 movie has a promising cast and a renowned director leading the project, and it can be the movie that finally fulfills one actor promise from Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. After a couple of rough years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the film industry had a great year in 2023. Massive box-office success like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Barbie reignited interest in going to the cinema, while critically acclaimed projects like Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon gave audiences a lot to talk about.

Pamela Anderson is returning to the big screen. The “Barb Wire” and “Baywatch” star is set to lead Gia Coppola’s third feature film “The Last Showgirl,” described as a redemption story about an aging Las Vegas dancer looking to connect with her adult daughter after her show is abruptly canceled. Seemingly part “Hacks” and part “The Wrestler,” the film is written by “Up Here” and “The Good Place” scribe Kate Gersten and directed by Coppola.
“The Last Showgirl” marks Anderson’s first lead role in years, and her latest feature after 2022’s “Alone at Night.” In addition to Anderson, the star-studded cast includes Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka, and Billie Lourd.
The official logline for the film reads: “A seasoned showgirl (Anderson) must plan for her future when her show abruptly closes after a thirty-year run. As a dancer in her fifties, she...

It's been almost 50 years since "Rocky" first arrived in 1976, and in that time the franchise has changed dramatically. The "Rocky" saga has now grown beyond original star Sylvester Stallone, with Michael B. Jordan's "Creed III" barely mentioning the man who birthed the now legendary film series. Whatever you think about that, everyone can surely recognize the staying power of the "Rocky" movies, which have formed part of our pop cultural history for the better part of a half century.
None of this could have happened without the first entry in the saga, of course. "Rocky" introduced the world to the scrappy Southpaw from South Philly, who led a film that was remarkable for its realism and affecting performances. Much of that was down to Stallone who, having written the script during a particularly challenging time in his personal life, insisted on starring in the film, only to wow audiences...

Which Brings Me to You is a dialogue-heavy rom-com set in New York that tries to distinguish itself from other films in the genre. Lucy Hale and Nat Wolff give it their all, but their characters' checkered pasts and the supporting personas introduced in the film may not be enough to make it stand out. The film mixes emotional drama with comedic moments, but the film leaves viewers wanting more of a climactic explosion in the story.
In this digital age of pseudo-enlightenment, quirky rom-coms are abundant. Many of the films are based in Los Angeles, a sort of safe bet in the unofficial U.S. capital of entertainment. If they're not set in L.A., then they're, of course, set in New York. Which brings me to...

Sofia Coppola's new movie, Priscilla, offers a slow, melancholic portrayal of femininity often overlooked in films about young women. Similar films like Marie Antoinette and Palo Alto capture the transitions and challenges of growing up, surrounded by fame and attention. Shiva Baby and Submarine explore the complexity of adolescent love and the journey towards finding one's footing in adult life, echoing Priscilla's themes.
After watching Sofia Coppola's new movie, Priscilla, it's hard not to crave a follow-up that captures the same slow, steady, and often tragic approach to femininity that the 2023 movie does. Acclaimed movie director Sofia Coppola is known for her beautiful and meandering approach to filmmaking, as well as her dedication to telling stories through the lens of a teenage girl's perspective. Although the stories Coppola tells are not always the most uplifting, they speak to a seriousness and melancholy that is often underrepresented in films...

Margaret Qualley and Jack Antonoff are officially in it for the long haul. The pair married Aug. 19, a little over a year after announcing their engagement in May 2022. But the music producer isn't the first public figure Qualley has dated over the years. She was once in a relationship with Nat Wolff, and she and Pete Davidson also dated at one point. Qualley's mom, Andie MacDowell, even gave Davidson her stamp of approval at the time.
Just like she's taken her relationship status to the next level, Qualley's professional life has also blossomed over the past few years. Early roles in "Palo Alto" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" helped kickstart her career, and she received an Emmy nomination in 2022 for her performance in "Maid." This May, she starred as a dominatrix in "Sanctuary" alongside Christopher Abbott, and in 2024 she'll star with Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, and Pedro Pascal in the film "Drive-Away Dolls.

Exclusive: Bella Thorne (Divinity) and Jack Kilmer (Palo Alto) have been set to topline The Tower, one of 102 projects to have been granted a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement following the launch of the actors strike. Also set for the fantastical drama, from filmmaker Adam Sigal (Nandor Fodor and The Talking Mongoose), are Cam Gigandet (Violent Night) and Chris Mullinax (Chariot).
The film currently in production is billed as a dark tale about a mysterious mermaid trapped and forgotten for years in the water tower of a small Southern town. Sigal described it as his “attempt to interpret the isolation and wanderlust I felt growing up in a small Southern town.”
The Tower is among the projects that began shooting shortly before the SAG-AFTRA strike launched and went on pause in the wake of the walkout until the securement of a SAG waiver. Producers are B.I. Rosen, Frederic Demey, James Bruce,...

It dives into the fangirl experiences, movements and markets of the ’80s, ’90s and 2000s, spotlighting the devoted girls, women and queer fans who have turned boy bands — including New Edition, New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys, *Nsync, One Direction and BTS — into multibillion-dollar franchises that dominate both the airwaves and pop culture phenomena.
For decades, fangirls like Sherman have had their musical infatuations demonized as frivolous or feminine, and superfans will shed new...

Val Kilmer is having something of a comeback moment with the buzzy release of the documentary “Val” on Amazon Prime Video, and next up for the actor is a return to “Top Gun” by reprising the role of (now Admiral) Tom “Iceman” Kazansky opposite Tom Cruise in “Top Gun: Maverick.” Specifics on Kilmer’s “Top Gun” reprisal remain under wraps, but producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently told People magazine that it was Cruise himself who fought to include Kilmer in the sequel. Kilmer’s career took a pause after the actor lost the ability to speak in 2014 due to throat cancer treatment.
“[Tom Cruise] said, ‘We have to have Val, we have to have him back. We have to have him in the film,'” Bruckheimer said. “And he was the driving force. We all wanted him, but Tom was really adamant that if he’s going to make another ‘Top Gun,’ Val had to be in it.

Yasiin Bey was announced as the star of a Thelonious Monk biopic on Wednesday, but as of Thursday, he appeared to be backing out the project in the wake of complaints coming from the late jazz great’s estate about the planned film.
“If the Monk Estate is not happy with it, if Mr. Monk III is not happy with it, then neither am I,” said Bey, the actor and musician formerly known as Mos Def, on Instagram Thursday morning. “To be clear, I was given every indication by the production company that the family was on board. It was one of my primary questions. … I took them at their word and clearly that wasn’t the case.”
Added Bey, “I can’t lie — I’m super excited, still, if there’s an opportunity to tell this type of story, but in the right way and only with the estate...
