When one thinks about the video streaming platform YouTube, vlogs about a person’s daily life or even short insightful documentaries that are just about anything and everything come to mind. Having surpassed the test of time, some content creators have become synonymous with the website, including Rhett and Link from Good Mythical Morning, who provide a daily show that thrives on variety, and Casey Neistat, an entrepreneurial personality from New York City. While they provide a sense of live-action entertainment for many people across the world, all kinds of unique webtoons also have come to reside on this very popular corner of the internet.
While there are channels like Cartoon Hangover that host a variety of shows like Bravest Warriors and Bee and Puppycat, which both serve science fiction fans, as well as God’s School: The Olympian Gods, which attracts fantasy enthusiasts with its retellings of epic folklore,...

Apple TV+ has announced its pickup for a Harriet the Spy animated series, which will directly adapt the iconic 1964 children’s novel of the same name written and illustrated by Louise Fitzhugh. The series, hailing from The Jim Henson Company and Rehab Entertainment, will have Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart) voice the titular role of young Harriet M. Notably, it will take shape creatively under Will McRobb (creator of The Adventures of Pete & Pete), who serves as the show’s primary visionary as writer and executive producer. This Adventure Time: Distant Lands review contains spoilers.
Adventure Time’s ending had a poignant, satisfying sense of finality to it while at the same time implying there were many more unseen adventures yet untold. With such a great finale, there are certainly ways Adventure Time could be brought back that would feel disappointing. In fact, there are already ongoing Adventure Time comics that explore the further tales of Finn and Jake’s post-show escapades. I tried to get into them, but the magic and fun of the TV show just doesn’t translate well to the page and, yeah, there is something a bit lame about the series’ ending being undercut by the characters just going on some more adventures afterwards.
The first of the four-episode special, Adventure Time: Distant Lands, deftly sidesteps this problem by being fully disconnected from the concluding events of the show, proving there are,...

Netflix has ordered “The Midnight Gospel,” an animated series from “Adventure Time” creator Pendleton Ward and comedian and host Duncan Trussell. The series will debut on the streaming service in 2020.
Co-creators Ward and Trussell will executive produce the eight-episode series, which is “set in a fantastical universe” and draws on interview clips from Duncan Trussell’s podcast, “Duncan Trussell Family Hour.” The animation production company behind “Big Mouth,” Titmouse Animation, is the studio.
The show centers on Clancy, a “spacecaster with a malfunctioning multiverse simulator [who] leaves the comfort of his home to interview beings living in dying worlds,” according to Netflix.
In addition to Cartoon Network’s “Adventure Time” — which ran for 10 seasons — the Emmy-winning Ward also has in the works the upcoming mini-series “Adventure Time: Distant Lands” for upcoming streaming service HBO Max, which launches in May. Lumberjanes and Bravest Warriors writer Grace Ellis and newcomer Shae Beagle join forces for a magical ongoing series, Moonstruck, coming this July from Image Comics. A story of monsters, romance, and magical hijinks, the first arc of Moonstruck also features a story-within-a-story illustrated by artist Kate Leth (Patsy Walker A.K.A. Hellcat, Spell on Wheels).
From the press release:
In Moonstruck, fantasy creatures live typical, unremarkable lives alongside humans, and barista Julie strives to be the most unremarkable of all. Normal job, normal almost-girlfriend, normal…werewolf transformations that happen when she gets upset? Yikes!
But all bets are off when she and her centaur best friend Chet find themselves in the middle of a magical conspiracy. Will Julie and Chet be able to save their friends? Is Julie’s dogged determination to be normal a lost cause? Who’s going to watch the coffee shop while our heroes are out saving the world?...

Two words could be used to describe comics in 2015: scandal and rebirth. The scandals happened off the pages at both companies large and small, and the rebirth happened in the comics themselves.
Graphic Policy reported that former Dark Horse Comics editor-in-chief Scott Allie bit writer Joe Harris (X-Files Season Ten) at the Boom! Studios party at San Diego Comic Con, and he was demoted to “executive editor” even though an assault of this kind would be grounds for dismissal at almost any other company. There was also another ethical breach at Dark Horse when The Rainbow Hub journalist Emma Houxbois reported that former Bleeding Cool editor Hanna Means-Shannon broke a Dark Horse-related story while it was under embargo and didn’t disclose the fact that she was taking a job with the company.

The best known web series produced by the Frederator network are scripted programs like Bee and PuppyCat and Bravest Warriors. At the same time, Frederator has begun to branch out, and thanks to its newest venture, it is primed to output more non-fiction programming. The animation network run by Fred Seibert has launched Frederator Flux, a new production wing that will focus on unscripted content.
Frederator’s decision to launch a wing devoted to unscripted content was spurned on by the success of 107 Facts, a web series that compiles bits of trivia related to specific TV shows and delivers them in a fast-paced style. Since its launch earlier in 2015, 107 Facts--which is distributed on both Channel Frederator and Cartoon Hangover--has been a huge hit. It has collected more than 54 million views to date, and the long runtimes of its episodes (they often approach 20 minutes in length) allows it to deliver big...

#BlackComicsMonth Diversity in Comics Panel (My view from the back row)
Hosted by the energetic Miz Caramel Vixen, the founder of Vixenvarsity.com, the #BlackComicsMonth Diversity in Comics panel featured a wide variety of panelists from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and sexualities. They also work in vastly different comics genres from Mildred Louis writing and drawing a Magical Girl webcomic with women of color called Agents of the Realm to David F. Walker, who directed a documentary about the blaxploitation genre and currently writes Cyborg for DC Comics and much more. The power of friendship and redemption is victorious in Bravest Warriors #36, which is the final issue of Kate Leth and Ian McGinty’s excellent run on the series. In their sixteen issues on the title, they went beyond the cartoon’s mythos showing Catbug’s evil brother and father, giving Plum a lovely girlfriend named Peach, and homaging everything from Pacific Rim and Agatha Christie to The Great Gatsby and Lord of the Rings in a clever, silly manner. This final issue is a little low on suspense, but Leth and McGinty more than makes up for it by giving each Bravest Warrior a crowning moment of brilliance or funny, which play out in a character and plot twist.
Superficially, Bravest Warriors #36 may seem...

"There will be a lot [of gore]" he told Collider. "The goal is to bring hard hitting anime to America and be America’s first animated series for adults," he added, before listing Akira, Ghost in a Shell, Ninja Scroll and Young Justice as inspirations.

In Bravest Warriors #35, writer Kate Leth and artist Ian McGinty gear up for the finale of their run by going to Catbug’s home planet? Yes, Catbug’s homeworld just happens to be in the belly of the same space shark as the Bravest Warriors and their spaceship. Leth and McGinty use this plot development to show a different side of Catbug’s psyche beneath his smiles, adorableness, and sassy side eye. Like a lot of people, he has issues with members of his family that get explored in a humorous, sometimes emotional way. Leth and McGinty use this spotlight on Catbug and his relationship with his relatives/fellow planet dwellers to add a new twist to what could be a conventional “put the...

Frederator Network has once again shown its strong position in the world of animated online video. The YouTube multi-channel network, founded in 1998 by entertainment veteran Fred Seibert and centered on all things cartoons, increased viewership on its own YouTube channel by 57% in the month of June 2015.
Channel Frederator not only gained more than double its YouTube video views compared to May’s figures, but the vertical also added over 100,000 subscribers. This feat helped place Frederator’s YouTube channel on Social Blade’s list of top 250 fastest-growing global channels based on subscriptions.
An even more impressive milestone came from the Cartoon Hangover channel, a core content partner of Channel Frederator. That channel, which boasts fan-favorite animations such as Bravest Warriors and Bee & Puppycat, increased views 100% and added more than 67,000 subscribers in the month of June.

Channel Frederator’s expansion has reached two new milestones. The animation-centric multi-channel network now claims 24 million total subscribers across all its partners, as well as 293 million views per month.
In a release, Frederator attributes much of this growth to a focus on helping individual channels reach their fullest viewership potential. The network, home to fan-favorite series such as Bravest Warriors and Simon’s Cat, facilitates cross-promotion projects and collaborations between its talent partners. Frederator also offers expert-led live streams and workshops for creators to better understand the animation industry.
These development initiatives have helped Frederator increase viewership on its partner channels an average of 12.69% month-over-month. Overall, the network’s roster of talent has collectively increased global organic viewership by 69.37% since Frederator’s inception in January 2014.

There was a time, not all that long ago, when kids were not welcome in a great many comic book stores. You might find this anti-intuitive, but the philosophy was fostered by some comics distributors and welcomed by most comics publishers.
(Aside for those of you who came in late: back in the olden days when comics were escaping from the primordial goo, we had a half-dozen or more companies distributing comics to the direct sales shops. How this devolved into a monopoly might be the subject of a future column, particularly if I’m looking for something amusing to write for my final column.)
There were many arguments these folks used to implore their retailers not to serve the younger crowd. The foremost was “these kids don’t spend enough money to make it worthwhile.” That’s true – if those kids were coming in on their own. The fact is,...

In Bravest Warriors #33, Kate Leth scripts an interactive closed room mystery story finding out which Warrior, ally, or random intruder killed Jelly Kid. There are three answers at the end of the comic (drawn by Adam Del Re, Kat Leyh, and Leth’s Fraggle Rock collaborator), but most of the fun is figuring out the “killer” yourself. The YouTube multi-channel network, specializing in animation and home to such fan-favorites as Cartoon Hangover’s Bravest Warriors, has acquired the rights to the South Korean preschool series Cloud Bread and Pom Pom & Friends.

This weekend at East Coast Comicon, I had the pleasure of interviewing artist Ian McGinty aka the guy who draws Catbug for a living. We talked about his work on Bravest Warriors as well as some other projects for Boom! Studios, like Munchkin and Bill and Ted’s Most Triumphant Return and even a future animation project. McGinty has been drawing Bravest Warriors for almost a year with writer Kate Leth (Edward Scissorhands), and has co-created a couple new characters, including Bugcat (evil Catbug) and Peach, who can build giant robots and has a romantic relationship with the Bravest Warrior Plum.
Sound on Sight: My first question is what initially drew you to Bravest Warriors as a creator and fan?
Ian McGinty: Kate and I were both fans before we even knew the comic existed. I used to watch it all the time, and then I did some covers for Boom!

Channel Frederator continues to dominate the online animation world as it goes more global. The YouTube multi-channel network founded by animation industry veteran Fred Seibert has just picked up the Spanish-language Fin Punch! series as part of an effort to expand its international programming selection.
Fin Punch! is an 18-part web show about a dolphin and narwhal who constantly let their clashing philosophical views get in the way of their goal to overthrow humanity. The aquatic mammal series was created by Matías Latorre and produced by Chilean-based Marmota Studios. Channel Frederator is translating Fin Punch! into English to be distributed on its wildly popular channel Cartoon Hangover (home to such fan-favorites as Bravest Warriors and Bee & Puppycat).
“I can't believe that Personas Cetaceas is going to be on Cartoon Hangover,” said Latorre in the release. “Two years ago I started this series with no expectations, and now our work will be seen by millions!

The multi-channel network, famous for such channels as Cartoon Hangover (home to Bravest Warriors) and Simon’s Cat, added 102 new content creators to its animation roster in late December 2014.
Frederator has three prominent new members in this acquisition round. The first is The Big Lez Show, an Australian cartoon series boasting over 230,000 subscribers and full of “crude Aussie humor.” JonnyEthco (with over 210,000 subscribers) is another new content partner for the McN; Jonny is a voice actor, producer, and animator on his own shows as well as other popular animation series like Battlefield Friends. Frederator's Cartoon Hangover channel is home to beloved web series like Bee and PuppyCat and Bravest Warriors. Beginning on January 15th, the channel will host its own live show, too. Cade Hiser, a manager for the Frederator McN, will join forces with video editor Nicholas Fung for a biweekly, half-hour, live streamed program.
The live show is inspired by the 24-hour live stream marathon Cartoon Hangover used to promote the first full season of Bee and PuppyCat, which debuted on November 6th, 2014. As during that event, Hiser and Fung will use their live show to give away Frederator swag, chat with guests, answer questions, and share art from fans. Hiser and Hung are asking fans to leave a comment or call in with any submissions.

Kate or Die “Little Ghost” (2014-present; updates whenever)
Written and drawn by Kate Leth
In November 2014, Kate Leth decided to switch over the format of her Kate or Die! from autobiographical to a young adult story starring various ghosts, monsters, and beasties. The story was later titled “Little Ghost” and currently has eleven chapters. The last update ends on a cliffhanger, and Leth posted on her website that it will be continued in 2015 with updates coming between her various projects, like Bravest Warriors and Edward Scissorhands. For now, “Little Ghost” is an adorable teen monster mystery with a diverse cast of characters and lush coloring that you’ll wish had more installments.
The basic premise of “Little Ghost” is that a bunch of Universal horror-type monsters (who happen to be cute teenagers) are going to a big house party thrown by Lucy, a happy girl with a veiny, heart shaped head.

In recent years, comics conventions have become less about the comics creators, who crafted (and continue to craft) the characters beloved by pop culture and more about celebrity guests. Yes, it is fun to get a picture made with your favorite Star Trek captain or Doctor Who companion, but from my personal experience as well as that of con-goers and the crowded nature of big shows like San Diego and New York Comic Con, it seems like the comics have been pushed aside for “geek culture” celebrities. Some conventions might as well take out the “comic” in “comic con”. However, some shows continue to put comics and creators first, and one of them is East Coast Comicon.
East Coast Comicon began as Asbury Park Comic Con and was held in 2012 at a converted bowling alley/rock club in Asbury Park, NJ. It was founded by independent comics creator Cliff Galbraith...

It was recently announced that Bill & Ted would be making a triumphant return in comic book form. The comic will be called Wyld Stallyns, and thanks to the Nerdist, today we have the first art and details surrounding the project.
The comic will run for six issues, and it comes from writers Brian Lynch (Puss in Boots) and artists Jerry Gaylord and Ian McGinty. I know we all would rather see a third movie, but at least William “Bill” S. Preston, Esq., and Theodore “Ted” Logan will be back in a new adventure! The comic will be released in March 2015.
Here are the details from the publisher, Boom! Studios:
Why We Love It: Similar to our Big Trouble in Little China comics, we’re returning readers to one of our favorite—and most excellent—cult-classic properties with a new Bill & Ted adventure of epic proportions. And because we’re fans first,...

Knowing the knowledge that lurks in the depths of the universe is a wonderful thing up until you realize that the physical result is becoming fully paralyzed. This happens to main character Beth Tezuka’s horse in the Bravest Warriors franchise, and the ramifications of this are explored in the Paralyzed Horse Giant book published by Boom! Studios. Inside are five short stories that explore a different facet of the Paralyzed Horse’s character, and the problems he faces due to his paralyzing knowledge of the universe.

Bravest Warriors #25
Written by Kate Leth
Art by Ian McGinty
Colors by Lisa Moore
Published by Boom!
In Bravest Warriors #25, Kate Leth and Ian McGinty take a break from their ongoing storyline to add depth to Catbug’s mythos and introduce a new character, Bugcat. Bugcat is a palette swapped version of Catbug, who has his mischievousness, but lacks his cute charm and sense of humor. Leth and McGinty give Catbug some time on his own and show what he gets up to when he’s not being adorable around the Bravest Warriors. Leth delves into Catbug’s emotional life and reveals that he does have the true makings of a hero even if he killed Jelly Kid and completely failed at leadership in “Catbug’s Away Team”. Ian McGinty has a deft touch with facial expressions and reaction panels in the opening scene which features an ersatz version of Cards Against Humanity,...

It seems the Channel Frederator Network can’t be stopped. The McN just added 141 channels to its already massive roster of talented creators. Some of the recent signings which helped expand the network’s growth include Silly Filly Studios (which creates mostly My Little Pony-based works), Falconer02 (a Minecraft-focused channel), and REsidentVille (home to gaming parodies). In addition to the 200 other channels Frederator acquired this past summer, the network boasts over 688 channels across all its properties. Additionally, its subscriber base now reaches over 10.5 million subscribers. Best known for its channel Cartoon Hangover (home to the popular Bravest Warriors), Channel Frederator focuses on original animators and their works. Emphasizing a “Declaration of Cartoon Independents,” the network has picked up steam over the last few years, signing well-known entities like David Firth’s Salad Fingers, Filmcow (“Charlie the Unicorn”), and Simon’s Cat. This new batch of channels only helps to...

This is Labor Day weekend, the official end of summer. Or really, the unofficial official end of summer, because calendar-wise summer doesn’t end until the Autumnal Equinox, which is September 23 this year. However, Labor Day is when all fun, beachy activities cease, and we all head back to school. Or if we are adults, back to the grind. Which is why, even if you have been out of school for years, it’s a good time to do a little back to school shopping and pick up whatever supplies you may need. Or you can just buy this stuff for your kids, but that is less than no fun. That is negative fun.
