On Netflix, it was a big first half of 2025 for limited series and — outside of phenom Squid Game — Ok six months for ongoing scripted series.
Only two English-language returning scripted series, The Night Agent (S2) and Ginny & Georgia (S3) made it into the Top 10 at #9 and #10, with four limited series ahead of them, Adolescence (#1), Zero Day (#4), Missing You (#5) and Sirens (#8).
Released today, Netflix’s semi-annual viewership report includes data for the three scripted series canceled so far this year, The Residence and Pulse after one season and The Recruit after two. None of them was an outright ratings flop.
Comedic White House murder mystery The Residence, starring Uzo Aduba, fared the best, ranking #23 with 33.3 million views from its March 20 release through June 30. New medical drama Pulse,...

One thing that Hollywood is known for is buying books and then letting the planned adaptations languish, especially when it comes to the fantasy genre. Fantasy stories are known for being epic and expensive to produce. While the initial idea of a chosen novel might sound great on paper, when it comes time to figure out the nitty-gritty financial details, many studios balk or shift focus.
For every big success, like Game of Thrones, there are dozens more projects left to rot in what we call "development hell." It doesn't mean that these stories will never appear onscreen, just that they are now in limbo, where it's unclear whether they will eventually come to fruition or disappear forever into the void. Ever since I watched the Apple TV+ series The Studio, I can't help but wonder if some of this is an intentional way for companies to block others from producing a potential mega-hit,...

This post contains spoilers for Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse.
Netflix has abruptly canceled many of its beloved original series over the years, despite fan outcry, but the most egregious instances of cancellation are stories that ended with intriguing cliffhangers, leaving the fate of these fictional worlds up in the air. One such instance is Netflix's "Shadow and Bone," whose season 2 finale concluded with Sun Summoner Alina (Jessie Mei Li) thwarting an assassination at great personal cost, hinting at a delicious moral dilemma to come. Sadly, we were robbed of a storyline in which Alina gets to navigate the root of her newfound shadow powers, which stand in stark contrast to her Sun Summoner abilities.
Despite its abrupt cancellation, "Shadow and Bone" had a more-than-decent two-season run, and it was able to flesh out the most complex aspects of Leigh Bardugo's novel series with self-assured panache. As expected from any YA...

In the golden age of multi-season arcs, Netflix seems to want to be the odd one out. The streamer rendered Ben Barnes’ Shadow and Bone canceled after 2 seasons, leaving no room for future Grishaverse projects. The abrupt axing after two seemingly great seasons came as a shock to the audience.
Meanwhile, platforms like FX and Prime Video are bringing back fan favorites; The Bear Season 5 and Upload Season 4 are official. So, is it possible Netflix could learn a thing or two from the series revival era gaining momentum? If so, we think investing in Shadow and Bone’s lore continuity might be the best decision Netflix will make in recent times.

Stephen King is not only an extremely prolific writer, but his works have been adapted numerous times, both for TV and film. 2025 was a great year for fans of the horror mastermind, with Oz Perkins' The Monkey released in February and more projects to come.

The latest Stephen King adaptation, The Institute should be the perfect way to pass time until the new season of Stranger Things is released. Based on King's 2019 novel, The Institute centers around a mysterious facility housing a bunch of teenagers with supernatural abilities. Luke Ellis (Joe Freeman) is our protagonist, and we follow his story as he wakes up in his strange new surroundings and meets Ms. Sigsby (Marie-Louise Parker), the enigmatic head of The Institute.
Outside of the Institute, in a nearby town, we meet Tim Jamieson, a former police officer played by Ben Barnes (Shadow and Bone). Tim is eager to get a fresh start, but his peace and quiet doesn't last for long as he soon becomes entangled in the mysteries of the shadowy institution next door.

Almost two decades since Ben Barnes first debuted the character of Prince Caspian in the live-action TheChronicles of Narnia films, he is throwing his weight behind a fantasy series for a new generation. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe premiered in 2005, and Barnes joined the franchise in the titular sequel that followed in 2008. C.S. Lewis’ fantasy series never reached full completion in feature film form, but that may change now that Greta Gerwig is behind the wheel. The Westworld actor spoke to Variety about his support for the new venture.
“With classic literature, there’s no end to the ways they can be adapted as long as it’s being fresh and it’s speaking to a new generation. I think that those stories have this one, some fantasy really allows you to tell beautifully allegorical stories about hope and goodness and faith. I...

The Wheel of Time aired on Prime Video for three seasons before the streaming service decided to end the series. The announcement came one month after the release of Season 3, and fans weren't happy.
The fantasy TV show was based on the book series of the same name by Robert Jordan, and finished by Brandon Sanderson. The series premiered in 2021 to a great start, setting a record on Prime Video for the most-watched series premiere, and attracting strong viewership. However, right after Season 3 featured the best scores yet, Prime Video pulled the plug on the series, and fans have been trying to revive it ever since, with a petition and, most recently, comments on Prime Video's Instagram account.

Fantasy television can be incredible, stunning and riveting with gorgeous effects and cinematography. But making it tends to be very expensive, and oftentimes fantasy series get canceled faster than shows in other genres due to those hefty price tags. While there are some staples out there that we can all fall back on, there are also losses like Amazon's recent cancellation of The Wheel of Time, that genuinely sting.
That's why sometimes it's nice to turn the television off altogether and escape into a good fantasy novel, especially one that is just the start of a well-written trilogy, one that can take us to farther reaches and more creative places than a TV show can. The following trilogies are just a few of the best ones out there right now that are generally better than most any fantasy show.

Ben Barnes recently discussed Shadow and Bone's cancellation, revealing his disappointment with the fantasy show's fate — and which story he wished had been adapted. Barnes played General Kirigan, or the Darkling, in Netflix's adaptation of Leigh Bardugo's books. And Shadow and Bone season 2's ending left his villain's future in question.
Of course, there were many storylines set up for a potential Shadow and Bone season 3, which made its early end more disappointing. During a discussion with Mama's Geeky (via TikTok), Barnes spoke about the show's fate, sharing which story he loved from the books and wanted to see on-screen:
"It was a good show, and I love those stories. And I think, sadly, the best stories that Leigh Bardugo wrote, the Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom stories – I love those books – and I’m sad for the guys who were playing the crow characters, because...

Amazon's best replacement for The Wheel of Time has suffered a major setback in the development phase. Earlier this year, The Wheel of Time, based on the bestselling epic fantasy book series by Robert Jordan (finished by Brandon Sanderson), was surprisingly canceled after season 3, despite the latest outing's major storytelling improvements and high ratings from audiences and critics alike.
Sadly, The Wheel of Time never managed to overcome the growing pains of its first season, and Amazon canceled the show due to low viewership. Naturally, Amazon Prime Video is now looking to get the ball rolling on another fantasy series, one which has the potential to become a much bigger hit: Fourth Wing, based on Rebecca Yarros' mega-selling Empyrean romantasy series.
Fourth Wing follows 20-year-old prospective student Violet Sorrengail as she enters Basgiath War College, a competitive, do-or-die setting in which hopeful cadets prepare themselves to be magically bonded to...

James Gunn’s upcoming revamped version of the Dcu has to get its hands on its own Batman. As shocking as that line is, it’s only true because all those comments and fan art of Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight standing side-by-side with David Corenswet’s Man of Steel won’t be materializing – not anytime soon, but never at all.
This is because, as it turns out, this new DC Universe is aiming to have a Caped Crusader of its own to carry forward the legacy of Bruce Wayne instead of just letting Pattinson continue his game. This being recently confirmed by Peter Safran himself, now the speculation around who could be the next Batman couldn’t be louder.

If Netflix had acquired The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022–present), it might have faced the same fate as Shadow and Bone (2021–2023), an 83% Rotten Tomatoes-rated series canceled after two seasons.
The Rings of Power, currently on Amazon Prime Video, holds a similar 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes; however, its future depends on viewership and creative direction. While it has been renewed for a third season, and production on the way, we cannot help but think that if the series were on Netflix, it might have long met the same fate as Shadow & Bone.

The campaign to save The Wheel of Time continues, because just like the folk of the idyllic Two Rivers, the fans are too stubborn to give up. Following last month's shocking cancellation of Amazon's fantasy series The Wheel of Time, fans have been mobilizing hard to save the show. The #SaveWOT campaign reached two more huge milestones over the weekend: its petition to save the show passed 150,000 signatures, and its fundraiser to support buying billboards in major cities around the world smashed all its stretch goals by pulling in more than $32,000.
That fundraiser began with a modest goal of $7,000, which it handily crushed in under 24 hours. It has now met all its stretch goals, meaning the organizers have enough money to buy billboards in places like New York City, Los Angeles, and London as well as a sky banner. During the 2010s, one television show reigned supreme, and its impact was felt around the world. The fantasy genre made a splash on the global stage as HBO adapted George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire into the award-winning series, Game of Thrones. Since then, there has been a desire to bring even more fantastical worlds and monsters to life. HBO doubled down on Westeros, with spin-offs like House of the Dragon and others in the works. Netflix went for The Witcher and Shadow and Bone. Prime Video decided to explore the world written about in Robert Jordan's massive 14-book series, known as The Wheel of Time. Unfortunately, after three seasons, of which the third season was the most critically acclaimed, Prime Video decided to break the spinning wheel and cancel the show.

Netflix Faces Backlash for Dropping Beloved Action-Comedy Series After Huge Audience Turnout ( Photo Credit – Netflix )
Netflix users are raising their voices over a show that grabbed massive attention but now sits in limbo. With over 323 million hours watched, it clearly struck a chord, and fans aren’t ready to let it go.
The Action-Comedy That Blew Up the Netflix Charts
The show in question, Obliterated, dropped in November 2023 and quickly climbed the platform’s charts. It had taken the No. 1 spot within just two weeks and held steady in the Top 10 for six straight weeks. However, despite this surge of popularity, Netflix cut it short after a single season of eight episodes.
Obliterated follows a team of elite operatives who take down what they believe is a major threat to Las Vegas. After a wild night of celebration involving booze, drugs, and more, they realize the nuclear bomb they disabled was a decoy.

Last week, Amazon hit fantasy TV fans with a bombshell when it canceled The Wheel of Time, its series based on the beloved books by Robert Jordan. This has been an especially difficult cancelation to stomach for a number of reasons, not least of which that the show is hot off the end of its third and by far best season. The Wheel of Time felt like it had found its footing and was only getting better, so it smarts to have the rug pulled out from under us.
Suffice it to say, fans aren't taking it lying down. A website devoted to saving the series called SaveWOT.com launched less than 48 hours after the cancelation. As of this writing, its petition beseeching another streamer to take on the series has already passed 56,000 signatures in just four days. If you haven't already signed it, consider giving the website a look!

How many times have we seen our favorite fantasy novels turned into live-action adaptations, only for them to flop miserably? While there have been rare cases where adaptations do work, we understand why authors are worried about tainting their work with a below-average movie or TV show. Brandon Sanderson, a highly accomplished author, has spoken up about exactly this.
Brandon Sanderson has a number of epic projects under his belt, including The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn. The most recent book in the former series is Wind and Truth, which ended up on the New York Times bestseller list. Needless to say, there is a huge audience for this series in particular, so why hasn’t The Stormlight Archive been brought to the screens?

One important plotline that Netflix’s Shadow and Bone never had a chance to explore makes the cancellation of the show terrible. The cancellation was heartbreaking for viewers as Alina’s (Jessie Mei Li) story abruptly ended, and her relationship with the Darkling (Ben Barnes) never reached the resolution it deserved.
However, that sudden ending is particularly terrible because it deprives viewers of a fantastic storyline twist and suggests that one part of Alina’s story may never be developed.
At the end of Season 2, Alina uses the shadow-powered Cut against an attacker during Nikolai’s (Patrick Gibson) coronation. This is shocking because the Darkling had apparently died at Alina’s hand before that, cutting off their relationship.
However, since nothing was ever verified, the only significant plot hole in the otherwise satisfactory conclusion was Alina’s newfound shadow abilities.

As one of the greatest modern fantasy authors, Brandon Sanderson amassed millions of fans around the world, as evident in how much he made for his best-selling novels. His most popular titles, the Mistborn series and The Stormlight Archive, are well-loved by readers. The question of the century is when the live-action adaptations happen.
For now, the author isn’t interested in giving his works away, not until he knows streaming platforms and studios are ready to adapt his books. Even the massive fame of Game of Thrones isn’t persuading Sanderson.

Amazon's Wheel of Time was finally finding its stride three seasons in, and now it's dead. Another high-profile fantasy adaptation cut short right when it was starting to work. The news isn't just a blow to fans; it leaves a gaping hole in the genre space that streaming studios still haven't figured out how to fill. For every House of the Dragon, there's a Willow, a Shadow and Bone, or The Sandman limping toward cancelation. Hollywood keeps looking for the next big franchise and keeps fumbling the handoff.
One saga has been waiting patiently to claim the throne. Red Rising by Pierce Brown is a sci-fi fantasy epic with Game of Thrones stakes and Star Wars scale. It has the story, the fanbase, and the emotional payoff to become the genre's next obsession. And it's almost criminal that it still hasn't been adapted.

Netflix’s cancellation of Shadow and Bone after its second season has left fans disheartened, especially as it also halted plans for the anticipated Six of Crows spin-off. Despite having scripts ready, on November 15, 2023, Netflix decided not to proceed with the spin-off.
Several factors influenced the decision. While Shadow and Bone garnered a dedicated fanbase, its viewership numbers did not meet Netflix’s expectations relative to its production costs.
Even though the future of Shadow and Bone and its related projects remains uncertain, the passionate fan response highlights the series’ significance and the potential for revival should another platform choose to continue the Grishaverse saga.

For fans of Shadow and Bone, Netflix’s untimely cancellation of the fantasy drama after just 2 seasons felt much like a betrayal, especially when you take Season 2’s jaw-dropping cliffhanger end into account. The show had built a loyal fanbase for itself and earned generally good reviews, which made its axing even more confounding.
But among the disappointed, there was one particular voice that was louder than the others. It was none other than the show’s lead star, Jessie Mei Li, who made it abundantly clear that the cancellation came as a piece of devastating news to her. She has also recently expressed great interest in returning to the show in the off chance that Netflix decides to pick it up again.

20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios) had just become home to the hottest sci-fi franchise in Hollywood in the late 1970s with "Star Wars" when it unexpectedly found itself the proud parent of a second, scarier, much more adult series in "Alien." The brainchild of legendary genre screenwriter Dan O'Bannon (and directed to stylish perfection by Ridley Scott), "Alien" jolted audiences with its chest-burster scare and kept them utterly terrified until Sigourney Weaver's Ripley expelled the big, acid-blooded Xenomorph into deep space.
When "Alien" became a box office smash, Fox knew there was more money to be mined from these sleek black buggers. Indeed, that was at the heart of James Cameron's famous pitch for "Aliens," where, legend has it, he scribbled the word "Alien" down on a cocktail napkin before adding a dollar sign as the "s." While Cameron delivered the goods and then some with his sequel,...

This is undoubtedly a painful blow for fans of Gotham’s caped crusader. However, Bruce Wayne is not the only one saying farewell.
Family favorites like Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks and Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom are also making their exit, leaving parents and little ones with fewer options. The early wave of removals includes Burlesque, Closer, Magic Mike Xxl, Cult of Chucky,...

The Alien franchise is stepping into new territory with a television series that promises to deliver the same heart-pounding horror fans love. It’s a fresh take on the iconic sci-fi universe, blending gritty survival with corporate intrigue.

Tom Hardy’s new action movie, Havoc, has only been streaming on Netflix for a couple of weeks, but it has been anything but well-received by general audiences. After debuting with a solid critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, it seemed like Havoc was heading in the right direction, but fans have been much harsher on the film than reviewers. Hardy’s Havoc finished last week with a 40% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which has since dropped to 37%, which makes it one of Hardy’s 10 lowest-rated movies ever. While the film was promoted as a bone-crunching, no-holds-barred action thriller, audiences have criticized the weak writing of the characters and overuse of CGI during fight scenes that detracts from any realistic feel.

Tom Hardy is having a great year. After wrapping up the Venom trilogy in 2024, the actor had two projects that headed straight to streaming and both experienced exciting success on different platforms.
The most recent release is Netflix's action thriller Havoc, which follows the successful Paramount+ series MobLand. Gareth Evans of The Raid fame wrote and directed Havoc, which starred Hardy, Timothy Olyphant, and Forest Whitaker in the main roles. Although the movie opened to mixed reviews from the critics and even worse ratings from the audience,Havoc undeniably became a major hit on Netflix, topping the charts in its first week, per Tudum.
Havoc premiered on Netflix on Apr. 25, and had only two days to make an impact before the streamer stopped the clocks. That makes its viewership even more impressive because, for the week between Apr. 21 and 27, Havoc received 29.8 million views, and 53.1 million hours viewed.

Even though it's been two years since Shadow and Bone season 2, which turned out to unfortunately be its last season, premiered on Netflix, we're honestly still thinking about the series. And I'm someone who hasn't read the novels, coming in as a show-only fan. So I can't even imagine how you book readers feel.
The second season definitely wasn't as strong as the first, but many of us still think that the fantasy drama was cancelled prematurely. Despite this, it doesn't seem like Netflix will reverse its decision. But, that doesn't mean we, and the cast members, aren't still thinking about it. Because one in particular agrees with us!
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote her new movie Havoc, actress Jessie Mei Li, aka the Alina Starkov, shared that if Netflix ever changed their mind about Shadow and Bone season 3, she'd definitely come back to reprise her role.
