Telluride Awards Analysis: ‘Hamnet,’ ‘Sentimental Value’ Join ‘Sinners’ Atop List of Oscar Frontrunners
Image
The 52nd Telluride Film Festival is now in the books. Margot Robbie, Ryan Coogler, Oprah Winfrey, David Oyelowo, Rian Johnson, Janet Yang, Kathy Kennedy and Frank Marshall were among those who came just to watch movies. Screenings were introduced with a group meditation (Chloé Zhao), a song (Jesse Plemons) and a wave (man of few words Bruce Springsteen). Adam Sandler and Emma Stone posed for photos in the streets with ecstatic local schoolkids. And the Oscar race came into clearer focus.

Below, you can read my biggest awards-related takeaways from the fest.

Four high-profile films that already have U.S. distribution had their world premieres in Telluride: Ballad of a Small Player (Netflix), Bugonia (Focus), Hamnet (Focus) and Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (20th Century). How did they go over?

Focus has plenty of cause for celebration, as both Bugonia and Hamnet played like gangbusters and look almost certain to...

Telluride 2025 Kicks Off the Oscar Race: What to Follow in the Awards Season to Come
Image
The Oscar race has one established frontrunner, which is often not the ideal place to be. As it happens, “Sinners” (Warner Bros.) auteur Ryan Coogler was checking out the competition at Telluride this Labor Day weekend, which unveiled a healthy slate of Oscar contenders.

Best Picture Contenders

One movie emerged that could challenge “Sinners” in multiple categories: Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”) delivered heart-wrenching family drama “Hamnet” (Focus), featuring two powerhouse lead performances from Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley as William and Agnes Shakespeare. Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 bestseller, the film tracks their early romance and marriage and the birth of three children, two girls and a boy, Hamnet. Their lives are rocked by grief when they lose Hamnet to the plague, and Shakespeare buries himself in writing the tragedy “Hamlet.”

The directors will support Zhao’s meticulous period craftsmanship and scriptwriting with O’Farrell, along with the tech categories Cinematography,...

Emma Stone Starrer ‘Bugonia’ Transfixes Venice, Draws Lengthy Standing Ovation
Image
Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone’s doom-laden black comedy-thriller Bugonia stupefied and delighted the Venice Film Festival on Thursday night, drawing a rousing six-minute standing ovation after its world premiere inside the Italian water city’s Sala Grande cinema. From their perch on the theater’s balcony, Lanthimos, Stone and co-stars Jessie Plemons and Aidan Delbis joined hands and bowed to the crowd in unison as the lengthy applause wound down. Throughout the film’s two-hour runtime, the Venice premiere crowd alternated between stunned silence and bouts of laughter in reaction to the story’s “explosive violence, bursts of slapstick physical comedy and satirical jabs,” as The Hollywood Reporter’s chief critic summed up the film’s “weird twists” in a rave review.

Bugonia finds Stone starring alongside another Lanthimos collaborator in Plemons and fellow cast members Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone. A remake of Korean director Jang Joon Hwan...

‘Bugonia’: What The Critics Are Saying About Yorgos Lanthimos’ Black Comedy Starring Emma Stone
Image
Yorgos Lanthimos’ new feature Bugonia is launching at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday night and critics are starting to have their say on the offbeat sci-fi black comedy starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

Bugonia marks a reunion for the director and Stone after the four-time Oscar-winning Poor Things. In their latest collaboration – an English-language remake of South Korean filmmaker Jang Joon-hwan’s Save the Green Planet! – Stone plays a high-powered CEO of a major company kidnapped by two conspiracists who are convinced the CEO is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.

The reactions have been largely positive, with the actors in particular coming in for high praise.

Deadline’s Pete Hammond called the film a “wild ride” and a return to form for the Greek auteur: “Bugonia is a dizzying, batsh*t-crazy story that ranks right up there with the filmmaker’s best films: Poor Things,...

Image
Exclusive: The genre maestros at BoulderLight Pictures (Barbarian) and Divide/Conquer (Heart Eyes) are teaming on Amityville, a radical new spin on the famed haunted house story for a new generation, sources tell Deadline.

Joseph and Vanessa Winter, the married writer-director duo behind the excellent SXSW found footage horror movie Deadstream, are set to direct from their own script. Plot details are under wraps. But Raphael Margules & J.D. Lifshitz will produce for BoulderLight, alongside Adam Hendricks & Greg Gilreath for Divide/Conquer.

Given that BoulderLight has been under a first-look deal with New Line since 2023, that will be the filmmakers’ first stop with the material, though it’s not yet been exposed to studios. Producers are looking to fast-track the film, with Q4 2025 being targeted for production.

Disney Leads U.S. Box Office With $1.1B Year To Date, But Warner Bros Is Billion-Bound Too
Image
As we near the half year point of 2025 for the domestic box office, which is currently running at $3.7 billion (+23% over 2024) for Jan. 1-June 15 frame, Disney Studios is leading all majors with $1.1 billion.

That’s not a surprise with a string of mass-appealing movies, i.e. Lilo & Stitch ($371.7M) and Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World ($200.5M). Even the ones that didn’t work to the top of their potential are providing a lot of cushion, read Marvel’s Thunderbolts* ($188.9M) and Snow White ($87.2M).

But the big pom pom worth waving is for Warner Bros. which stands at $906.9M through yesterday from eight titles. With F1, James Gunn’s Superman and Weapons on deck in the next month and half, the Burbank, CA lot is destined for $1 billion-plus at the domestic box office before Labor Day. For all the cry-cry about how the pressure is on the motion picture...

‘Lilo & Stitch’ Earns Third Box Office No. 1 With $32.5 Million Weekend
Image
Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” will take the No. 1 spot at the box office for a third weekend, earning $32.5 million and fending off Lionsgate’s “Ballerina,” which is underperforming with a $25 million start.

“Lilo & Stitch” is continuing its push to leg out to the $1 billion mark, currently standing at $335.8 million domestic and $772 million worldwide. Its legs will be challenged next weekend by the arrival of another remake: Universal/DreamWorks’ “How to Train Your Dragon.”

“Ballerina,” a “John Wick” spinoff starring Ana De Armas, is opening below projections of a $30 million start, with its $25 million opening roughly a third of the $73.8 million opening of “John Wick: Chapter 4” in 2023.

While Lionsgate says they are in line to turn a profit on the film thanks to foreign presales that allowed it to recoup a substantial portion of the film’s $80-90 million budget, “Ballerina” risks being squeezed out by the summer competition despite positive audience reception,...

3 new Netflix movies dropping in early June you might regret watching
Image
A new month brings new movies to Netflix. Many of these are older gems, such as the six Alfred Hitchcock films that dropped on June 1, but that doesn't mean they are all good. You might like a movie that many do not.

Such is the case with the three films that follow. They aren't very good. If you don't believe us, just check their Rotten Tomatoes scores. Neither critics nor general audiences were huge fans.

We are just trying to warn you so you don't run across a good idea for a flick that truly only wastes your time. You only have so much every day, so move on from these and find some films that are worthy of your viewing.

These three movies new to Netflix should be avoidedThe Devil's Own (1997)

This movie, unfortunately, came at a time when neither Harrison Ford nor Brad Pitt were at the top of their immense games.

Wes Anderson Film Nets $95K Per Screen Ahead of Nationwide Rollout
Wes Anderson
Focus Features’ limited launch of Wes Anderson’s espionage comedy “The Phoenician Scheme” generated $570,000 from six venues in New York and Los Angeles across the May 30-June 1 frame, translating to a $95,000 per-theater average—the strongest specialty debut of 2025 and the biggest since “Barbenheimer” year. The figure edges past A24’s previous leader “Friendship,” which opened to $445,000 on half as many screens earlier this spring.

Focus acquired worldwide rights in February and is partnering again with Indian Paintbrush after “Asteroid City” and “Moonrise Kingdom,” continuing a relationship that has delivered steady arthouse returns for the studio. Shot at Germany’s Babelsberg Studios with €10.4 million backing from the federal film fund, the production reunites Anderson with cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel and composer Alexandre Desplat.

“The Phoenician Scheme” premiered in competition at Cannes on May 18, where it drew a four-minute standing ovation before heading to New York for a star-studded domestic premiere attended by Scarlett Johansson,...

Wes Anderson’s Daughter Has Changed What Classic Movies He Now Watches, Instilling a Love of Musicals
Image
The single-minded drive of Wes Anderson’s latest protagonist, Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro), will be familiar to fans of the director, although “The Phoenician Scheme” robber baron’s ambitions outstrip even those of explorer Steve Zissou and the wily Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Zsa Zsa’s quest to complete the Korda Land and Sea Phoenician Infrastructure Scheme has meant putting his fortune and life at risk, leading him to the unexpected move of making his estranged daughter Liesl (Mia Threapleton) his successor. Entrusting the 20-year-old would-be nun, who doesn’t hold her father nor business in high regard, starts as a strategic decision, but over the course of the film (and numerous near-death experiences), Zsa Zsa’s business ambitions morph into wanting to become a father.

While on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, Anderson acknowledged that the father-daughter theme taking center stage likely stemmed, in part, from the director now having his own daughter,...

Sneak peek: 29 new movies and series coming to Netflix on June 1
Image
As with every month on Netflix, your favorite streamer is bringing a lot of new goodies on June 1. The total number of 29 might not seem as much as the last few months, but then fewer things are leaving at the end of May. There’s less to give because there is less to take away.

These Cannes 2025 Prize Winners Will Inspire Oscar Campaigns
Image
Neon CEO Tom Quinn took no chances this year en route to winning the company’s sixth Cannes Palme d’Or in a row, for Iranian dissident Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident.” He acquired the film just two days before Saturday’s award ceremony. Neon also collected the festival Jury Prize for “Sirât” (shared with Mubi’s recent buy “Sound of Falling”), and two awards for Brazil’s “The Secret Agent” — Best Director (Kleber Mendonça Filho) and Actor (Wagner Moura ).

Neon came out ahead on the acquisitions derby, as Mubi’s starry $23-million pick-up “Die My Love,” from Scottish/British filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, came up empty-handed. A Cannes Actress win for Jennifer Lawrence could have fueled an Oscar campaign, but that loss won’t stop Mubi from pursuing that goal. Similarly, although Oliver Hermanus’ muted American drama “History of Sound” won nothing, Focus may still pursue acting...

Madame Web Star Sydney Sweeney Reflects On Her Marvel Experience And The Positives Of Making The Panned Movie
Image
Given Sony Pictures' largely dismal track record with its Marvel movies, most fans didn't have particularly high expectations for Madame Web. So, when the movie debuted with 12% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, no one was shocked.

Despite boasting an impressive cast and a director with superhero experience in Sj Clarkson, little to nothing about Madame Web worked. Now, it's destined to be remembered as one of the worst superhero movies ever made.

While lead star Dakota Johnson was wifely ridiculed for her performance as the title character, Isabala Merced and Sydney Sweeney managed to emerge largely unscathed.

Talking to Empire Online, Sweeney, who played Julia Cornwall/Spider-Woman, reflected on her experience of making a superhero movie.

"It’s always fun to be able to be a part of something that’s bigger than yourself," she started. "I hadn’t done a studio film yet,...

J.D. Scrubs In: Zach Braff Set To Return For ABC Reboot
Image
Finally more good news for Scrubs fans. Five and a half months after the reboot of the beloved medical comedy secured series creator Bill Lawrence, the project has locked in star Zach Braff, sources tell Deadline. He will reprise his role as John “J.D.” Dorian in the Scrubs followup, which is in development at ABC from 20th Television. Reps for the network and studio declined comment.

The deal with Braff comes after months of touch-and-go negotiations that hit major hurdles over both money and Braff’s request for the series to film in Los Angeles and not Vancouver as originally planned, sources said. The impasse was so serious, there was a chance for the entire project to be, um, scrubbed, until the two sides recently came to an agreement. Because Scrubs is still in development, no filming location has been announced.

The Scrubs reboot is proving to be a...

Cannes Market 2025: Uncertainty, Optimism and the ‘Anora’ Afterglow
Image
Call it the “Anora” effect.

As the 2025 Cannes Film Festival looms, a halo of optimism hangs over the south of France just two months after Sean Baker’s indie took the Oscars by storm, winning five awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress. The Neon film made its grand debut at Cannes 2024 and rode a wave of enthusiasm all the way to the Dolby Theatre. It’s merely the latest in a line of Cannes films that have found success recently at Hollywood’s most prestigious awards show.

Films like “The Substance,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Triangle of Sadness,” “Drive My Car” and “Parasite” all premiered at Cannes, then found themselves Oscar-nominated less than a year later. Now all eyes are on what will be the buzziest movies at this year’s fest, although hope that the next “Anora” is on tap is tempered somewhat by uncertainty about...

Released in 2024, Conclave follows the election process of a new pope and stars Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini. The movie won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar and has since seen a boom in popularity on streaming following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, and now it looks like the actual cardinals who will choose the next Pope are among its viewers.

According to Politico, some of the 133 high-ranking clerics set to take part in the conclave that started on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, watched the movie Conclave for guidance. Politico points out that the majority of the cardinals (about 110) who make up the conclave were appointed by the late Pope Francis...

Despite Its Horrible Rt Score, This Movie Is Will Smith’s Most Underrated Work
Image
Will Smith is one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood. From blockbuster franchises like Men in Black and Independence Day to critically acclaimed performances in Ali and The Pursuit of Happyness, Smith has proven his versatility time and time again. While his movies have collectively raked in billions, not all of his work gets the recognition it really deserves.

Among his vast filmography lies a film that didn’t receive much love when it first hit theaters. Sometimes it takes time for people to realise what a real gem is. It has since found its place in the hearts of viewers. The name of the movie is Focus.

Though it was released to mixed reviews and a modest box office performance, Focus brought something unique to the table. A crime drama with a splash of romance and humor, this 2015 film starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie is an underrated gem that deserves more appreciation.

Image
Brett Goldstein, who is widely known for his work as Roy Kent from Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, not only stars in the show but also co-writes it along with Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt. It has been known that Goldstein initially got on board with the team of Ted Lasso as a writer, but later, when they started developing the storyline for Roy Kent, he was inclined towards playing it on-screen. To his luck, his audition was just the thing the makers had been looking for, and thus, he got the part.

The stand-up comedian-writer co-created another Apple TV+’s, one of the most beloved shows, Shrinking, alongside Jason Segel. The show has received a lot of love and support from the audience and critics for staying real with real-life problems and not going overboard when it comes to seeking professional help. From Tom Cruise To Emma Stone: Which Stars Are Likely To Walk The Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet?
Image
Among the lineup for the Cannes Film Festival’s 78th edition are some big names from Hollywood and global cinema. We already knew that Tom Cruise will light the fuse on Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning on May 14 out of competition, while there was plenty of speculation that Scarlett Johansson would have a pair of movies on the Croisette. The latter has now been confirmed with Johansson’s directorial debut Eleanor the Great set for Un Certain Regard, and her acting reteam with Wes Anderson in his latest, The Phoenician Scheme, in Competition. Also confirmed is Ari Aster’s Eddington with Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone.

Many more stars are potentially in store now that the bulk of the official selection has been revealed. Not everyone is confirmed to attend the Riviera shindig, but here’s a look at some of the possibilities.

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Will Smith has spoken out about what’s become of his career.

Or, to be more specific, he has Rapped about what’s become of his career.

As we’re sure you must recall, Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage at the Academy Awards in 2002… an incident that we still cannot believe actually took place.

The actor issued an apology and semi-explanation shortly afterward, but hasn’t said a lot in public since.

Steven Soderbergh Admires the ‘Interesting Choices’ Timothée Chalamet Has Made as an Actor
Image
Being partly responsible for turning George Clooney into a movie star, Steven Soderbergh knows a thing or two about spotting a hitmaker. Sure, Clooney had the looks, the charm, and a juicy part on the hit medical drama “E.R.” that gave him the opportunity to hone his craft, but in casting him to lead “Out of Sight,” and their most successful collaboration, “Ocean’s Eleven,” Soderbergh gave him a leg up few stars manage to receive today. Nowadays, it seems acting is a talent you have to be born with, and no one knows this better than recent Oscar-nominee Timothée Chalamet.

“It would appear Timothée Chalamet is a movie star,” said Soderbergh in a recent interview with Men’s Health. “Like, this guy can make movies hits, and they’re a wide range of movies. So, everybody’s chasing him. I don’t know him, but he seems to be making interesting choices.

Box Office: ‘Novocaine’ Leading ‘Black Bag’ and ‘Mickey 17’ in Close Race for First as Theaters Potentially Face the Slowest Weekend of 2025
Image
Movie theaters haven’t exactly been bustling since the start of 2025 and the calendar year is about to turn in one of its most meager frames yet. Even with two new wide releases — Paramount’s slapstick beat-em-up “Novocaine” and Focus Features’ spy film “Black Bag” — exhibitors are in danger of a particularly beleaguered weekend, one that will likely see no feature grossing in the eight digits.

That hasn’t happened since February 2024, when Apple’s hopeful franchise starter “Argylle” crumbled in its second weekend. Whether or not any individual releases can get north of $10 million, the overall outlook remains dreary. The Feb. 7 Super Bowl weekend remains the lowest-grossing of 2025 in North America, when “Dog Man” led charts with $13 million and all releases totaled $55.8 million. This weekend seems likely to sink lower.

“Novocaine” has the edge for No. 1 for now, though “Black Bag” and last week’s “Mickey 17” aren’t far behind.

How They Tuned Up 8-Oscar Nominated Bob Dylan Biopic ‘A Complete Unknown’
Image
Exclusive: The journey to bring Bob Dylan’s formative story to the screen took more than a decade. The film had a coterie of producers as it wound its way to production. Fred Berger and Alex Heineman got the PGA mark along with writer/director James Mangold. The other producers are Bob Bookman, Alan Gasmer, the film’s star Timothee Chalamet, Peter Jaysen, and Jeff Rosen. Here, Berger and Heineman explain the road to bring to screen the evolution of Dylan from the future from folk to rock icon. The Searchlight film tonight competes for eight Oscars including Best Picture.

Deadline: When Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016, he didn’t show up for the ceremony. What was the process in getting him to play ball here?

Box Office: ‘Captain America’ Leads Slowest Oscar Weekend in Years, ‘Last Breath’ Opens to $7.8M
Image
Oscar weekend was a bust at the box office this year.

Overall domestic revenue is estimated to come in between $56 million and $57 million, the lowest by a long shot in at least a decade, according to ComScore. This excludes the year the awards show was delayed to early April because of the pandemic and as theaters were still struggling to come back online. Over Oscar weekend in 2021, combined revenue hit $57.2 million over the April 4-6 frame.

The reason for this year’s drought? A lack of new event product and the much-debatad performance of Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World. And nearly all of the top Oscar nominees are now available in the home, or long done with their theatrical runs.

Brave New World had no trouble staying atop the chart in its third outing with $15 million for a domestic total of $163.7 million $341.8 million globally. The lingering question — can...

Here's Why Nosferatu Wants Ellen So Much In New 'Nosferatu' Movie
Image
The entire plot of Nosferatu revolves around Bill Skarsgard's Count Orlok wanting Lily-Rose Depp's Ellen more than anything in the world and stopping at nothing to get her; however, the reasons behind his lust are not entirely spelled out.

After a successful theatrical run (the movie grossed $178 million on a $50 million budget) that lasted longer than most Focus Features titles, Nosferatu began streaming on Peacock, allowing an entirely new audience to experience the fantasy horror.

The movie is directed by Robert Eggers and follows a vampire as he sacrifices everything to reach a woman who unknowingly calls out to him (read a full plot breakdown of Nosferatu here).

‘Conclave’, ‘Say Nothing’ Win At USC Scripter Awards
Image
The writers behind the Oscar-nominated adapted screenplay of Focus Features’ Conclave and an episode of the FX and Hulu series Say Nothing on Saturday night at the 37th annual USC Scripter Awards.

The winners were revealed tonight during a black-tie ceremony in the Town & Gown ballroom at USC. The awards, bestowed annually by the USC Libraries, honor the writers of the year’s most accomplished film and episodic series adaptations as well as the writers of the works on which they are based.

Conclave, adapted by Peter Straughan based on the novel by Robert Harris, previously won the Golden Globe Screenplay trophy. The film has a total of eight Oscar nominations, including for star Ralph Fiennes and for Best Picture.

A political potboiler set within the Vatican, Conclave follows Cardinal Lomeli (Fiennes), the Dean of the College of Cardinals, as he oversees a secretive papal election following the sudden death of the Pope.

And now she is singled out by a rival talk show host who recently spoke out against The View.

Netflix Cancels 'Yellowstone'-Style Series 'Territory' After Just One Season
Image
The merciless axe of Netflix falls again, this time on the Yellowstone-esque series, Territory. The Australian neo-western has been cancelled after just one season (adding itself to the streamer’s ever-growing list), with the outlet C21 Media confirming the news. Unfortunately, the series will now not return for its planned second season, despite Territory Season 1 earning an impressive score of 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Created by Ben Davies and Timothy Lee, and starring an ensemble cast that includes Anna Torv, Michael Dorman, Robert Taylor, and Sam Corlett (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Territory was one of the many current attempts to match the success of Paramount’s Yellowstone, with Territory telling the tale of the world’s largest cattle station, Marianne Station, which, when left without an owner, sees the most powerful factions in the Australian outback, including miners, landowners, cowboys and gangsters, start preparing their weapons.

In a joint statement,...

‘Nosferatu’ and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ Both Raced to Streaming at Warp Speed
Image
“Nosferatu” (Focus) and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (Paramount), two of the biggest hits last Christmas, are both coming to their studios’ streaming platforms less than two months after their theatrical release. That is a radical decrease in the amount of normal time before home subscribers can see a hit film for no extra charge.

In a week that saw four different films released no earlier than January 12 make the VOD top 10 lists, Mel Gibson’s “Flight Risk” (Lionsgate) currently is the most popular. At Netflix, the Italian-set rom-com “La Dolce Villa” capitalized on Valentine’s Day to take the #1 spot.

With the absence of any same-week streaming charts for all services, IndieWire normally concentrates on top 10 charts for VOD (which usually is the first stage of home availability) and Netflix’s same-day list. But the gravity of these two announcements overshadows our normal coverage.

We surveyed the average time before...
