Box Office: ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Flies to $8.6 Million in Thursday Previews, A24’s ‘Materialists’ Earns $1.5 Million
Image
Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” picked up $8.6 million from Thursday previews as it soars towards a projected $70 million to $80 million debut. The overall preview number climbed even higher to $11.1 million, because Universal hosted “early access screenings” on Wednesday.

“How to Train Your Dragon,” which is based on a 2010 animated adventure, is expected to earn an additional $110 million at the international box office, where the film is opening in nearly every major foreign market. That positions it to be the latest in a line of recent family friendly hits, joining the likes of “A Minecraft Movie” and “Lilo & Stitch.” Like those films, it carries a PG rating.

“How to Train Your Dragon,” which is about a scrawny teen named Hiccup who befriends an injured dragon called Toothless, cost $150 million to produce. Critics have mostly been kind, handing the film a solid 77% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘How To Train Your Dragon’ Firing Up Around $8M+ In Previews – Late Thursday Update
Image
Exclusive: Universal’s live action take of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon is eyeing around $8M-$9M in previews, which not only includes tonight’s monies but those from early fan access screenings. As we always say, these are industry estimates, so they could fluctuate by the time Universal reports in the morning. The studio didn’t return request for comment on what we were spotting.

While early week projections were $65M-$75M, exhibition has been pushing this one in hopes they can wrangle a $100M opening. We could use more of those this summer post Memorial Day weekend.

The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes for this Dean DeBlois directed movie (he did the original animated trilogy) is an epic 99% with critics at 77% certified fresh (that’s a little higher than Lilo & Stitch‘s 72% fresh; that pic’s audience score settling at 93%). Previews began today at 2Pm.

Box Office: ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ to Fly to $75 Million in Opening Weekend
Image
Hiccup and Toothless are readying to fire up the box office.

Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” is poised to fly to $70 million to $80 million in its box office debut. Enthusiasm from family audiences and goodwill toward the original 2010 animated adventure could propel inaugural ticket sales even higher, according to independent tracking services and rival studios. “How to Train Your Dragon” looks to collect another $110 million at the international box office, where the film lands concurrently in nearly every major territory.

Even the lower end of domestic projections would a strong start for “How to Train Your Dragon,” which cost $150 million to produce. Set on the mythical viking village of Berk, the story follows the adventures of a scrawny misfit teen named Hiccup, who befriends an injured dragon he calls Toothless. Their bond defies centuries of tradition, where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Trilogy, Ranked Worst to Best
Image
Before dragons could soar onto the big screen in glorious CGI fire-breathing form, How to Train Your Dragon was just another animated underdog from DreamWorks. But then, boom, it launched one of the most emotionally rich, visually breathtaking trilogies of the 2010s.

Yep, the franchise unloaded stunning animation, tear-jerker-level storytelling, and epic soundtracks. Literally, the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy gave us heart-punching goodbyes, sky-soaring friendships, and enough flying scenes to make Pixar a little nervous.

And now? Well, the franchise has spread its wings into live-action territory. Yup, that’s right, DreamWorks has officially brought a live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake, and shockingly, it doesn’t just coast on nostalgia. It actually flies. This remake apparently honors the original’s charm while upgrading the magic for a new audience, and yes, Toothless still steals every scene.

So, while the Dragon legacy still burning brighter than ever,...

Disturbing True Reason Why T.J. Miller Was Replaced in ‘How to Train Your Dragon’
Image
The 2025 live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon isn’t just flapping its wings; it’s practically breakdancing in the sky. With a cast so well-picked you’d think it was plucked straight from Odin’s own casting scroll, we’ve got Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, and the grizzled growl of Gerard Butler once again roaring life into Stoick the Vast.

Dean DeBlois returns to the director’s chair like he never left, steering this cinematic longship back to familiar yet freshly forged lands. But let’s rewind to 2019’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World: the supposed final chapter. Fans sobbed. Toothless soared. Hiccup matured. All was well in Berk… or so it seemed. Behind the scenes, though, there was a storm brewing in the sound booth.

Tuffnut Thorston, that beard-braiding, half-baked twin tornado of comic chaos, sounded like his usual deranged self.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Star Nico Parker Reacts to Trolls About Her Casting: “I Can’t Value Your Opinion on My Hair”
Image
Nico Parker is speaking out about social media reaction to the actress’ casting as Astrid in the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon.

In an interview with British publication The Times, Parker was asked about online trolls grousing that the actress does not have blonde hair and blue eyes, as Astrid was initially depicted in the animated films that launched with 2010’s original How to Train Your Dragon. Universal Pictures releases the remake of the DreamWorks Animation hit movie in theaters Friday.

“There’s some people that really love the animated movies and really want to see an exact play-by-play of that film, and I hope that you can watch [the new version] and find something that you love about it, regardless,” Parker said. “But for the people that just hate inclusivity, hate change — when it comes to that side of things, I just don’t care.”

The 20-year-old performer continued,...

How To Train Your Dragon's Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed - Here's How Remake Compares To Animated Classic
Image
The review embargo for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon lifted late last night (you can read a breakdown of those here). Interestingly, the movie's Rotten Tomatoes score tells a different story from what seemed like relatively mixed verdicts from critics.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, How to Train Your Dragon currently sits at 83% based on 40 reviews. That's "Certified Fresh" territory, and suggests even the reviewers who were left underwhelmed still deemed it "Fresh" on the review aggregator.

Despite plenty of complaints about it essentially being a shot-for-shot remake—The Wrap, for example, decried it as a "squandered opportunity"—this score should give How to Train Your Dragon a fighting chance to dethrone Lilo & Stitch at the global box office this weekend.

For comparison's sake, 2010's How to Train Your Dragon from DreamWorks Animation is "Certified Fresh" at 99%. The sequel scored 92%, with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World...

How To Train Your Dragon Looks To Become The Next Animated To Live-Action Box Office Smash
Image
Disney has made a cottage industry by taking its animated classics and remaking them for a new generation into live-action movies. While it may have experienced some misfires along the way, Disney made more than $7 billion at the box office with these remakes from 2010 to 2019 alone. Hence, it was only a matter of time before other studios started doing something similar. That brings us to this year's "How to Train Your Dragon" remake from DreamWorks and Universal, which looks to be a very faithful reworking of the 2010 animated favorite. The question is, can Universal successfully execute this play from Disney's playbook?

Directed by Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the original animated film, "How to Train Your Dragon" is currently expected to pull in between $67 and $77 million domestically when it opens next weekend, per Box Office Theory. That would seemingly put it on track for success. While that number might seem low-ish for this sort of blockbuster,...

'Disney Did Not Do That': Why Lilo & Stitch Co-Director Turned Down the Remake for the Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon
Image
Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon are beloved animated films. In 2025, both returned with live-action versions.

Dean DeBlois had been attached to both since he co-directed both animated versions with Chris Sanders. But while the latter returned to the recently-released Lilo & Stitch live-action remake as the voice of the blue koala-like lovable alien, DeBlois wasn't a part of the project. Speaking to Cbr's Grae Drake ahead of the release of How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake, DeBlois revealed Disney didn't ask him if he wanted to direct.

When asked whether he had seen the Lilo & Stitch live-action remake, the filmmaker replied, "I have not seen it." When asked if he planned to check it out after he was done with the How to Train Your Dragon press tour, DeBlois responded, "I'm just, I'm curious, because in this case, Universal approached me, you know, to their credit,...

'How To Train Your Dragon' Director Hopes Fans Will "Embrace" the Live-Action Remake
Image
Besides interconnected universes and franchise films, one of the more popular trends in the Hollywood film industry is remakes of successful animated projects. Look no further than the record-breaking Memorial Day weekend—the movie that took the top spot, Disney's Lilo & Stitch, is a live-action remake of the 2002 animated movie of the same name. One of the highest-grossing films of all time is a remake of The Lion King, done with photorealistic CGI animation as opposed to the original 2D animated film that it is based on. Despite these success stories, the director of the upcoming How to Train Your Dragon remake has had concerns about the project.

When asked by CinemaBlend about the audience reception to the remake of How to Train Your Dragon, director Dean DeBlois spoke candidly about his worries regarding how the film would be perceived. Specifically, the director revealed he is well aware of...

After Disney found some success redoing beloved animated movies in live-action, Universal followed suit by greenlighting a remake of How To Train Your Dragononly a few years after the animated trilogy concluded. DreamWorks How to Train Your Dragon is looking at an impressive opening weekend, one that would be the best of the franchise. How to Train Your Dragon, a remake of the 2010 animated film of the same name, is one of the most anticipated movies of the 2025 summer movie season. Universal Pictures is incredibly confident in the film as they screened the movie at Cinema Con in April to positive reactions and are already working on a sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2, for a 2027 release date.

‘Moonrise’ Netflix Review: Gorgeous Animation Marred By Unnecessarily Complicated Storytelling
Image
It always hurts me when an animated project turns out to be bad, not on a technical level, but on a storytelling level. If the designs for the world-building, the characters, the backgrounds, the foregrounds, the action sequences, the expressions on the faces of the characters, and everything else that you are seeing visually are awful, it’s really easy to say that I didn’t like looking at it. I can appreciate the ambition and whatnot, but I don’t have to split hairs over why it didn’t work for me. Things are different when I love everything that I am looking at, but I don’t feel any emotions. Then it’s the fault of either the characters’ motivations, the lack of emotional stakes, or just the needless overcomplication of a narrative that isn’t as complex as the writers think it is. Recently, it has happened with Kung Fu Panda 4,...

Universal Loves the Live-Action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ So Much, It’s Already Greenlit a Sequel
Image
Audiences at CinemaCon this morning got their first look at the live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon,” the first time it’s premiered ahead of its release this summer. But Universal is so sky high on the film, the studio announced during its CinemaCon presentation Wednesday that it has already greenlit a sequel.

Universal has dated “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” yet another live-action adaptation of the DreamWorks Animated film, to open in theaters June 11, 2027. It opens a week after “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” which Sony also just dated during its CinemaCon presentation.

Director Dean DeBlois — this franchise has been his baby since the very first animated film back in 2010 — will be back in the director’s chair for the sequel.

“How to Train Your Dragon 2” is an adaptation of the 2014 film specifically, not a new story extending off the live-action film. That film detailed heroes...

Shrek's New Look in 'Shrek 5' Isn't Actually That Bad
Image
Quick LinksShrek's 2020s Makeover for 'Shrek 5'The Positive Side of Shrek's Redesign

Animation lovers, rejoice! Shrek is coming back to the big screens in late 2026. This DreamWorks franchise is easily one of the most popular animated properties of this century. So a new film should have united fans both young and old, right? Right? Not exactly, as all anyone can talk about online is the new design of the characters in Shrek 5. It's difficult to define just what exactly is upsetting fans, but it mostly boils down to Shrek looking "different."

This redesign isn't that unexpected, as it's been nearly 16 years since the last Shrek movie. CGI animation has improved in that time, with DreamWorks utilizing new technological methods. It's also been a full 25 years since the inaugural Shrek film, released when CGI was in its infancy. Each of the three subsequent films preserved most of the designs...

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ to World Premiere at CinemaCon
Image
“How to Train Your Dragon” will screen for audiences for the first time at CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners.

The world premiere will take place on April 2 at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, more than two months ahead of the film’s theatrical release on June 13.

CinemaCon will undoubtedly be a receptive audience, but unveiling “How to Train Your Dragon” in this capacity signals Universal’s confidence in the movie’s commercial prospects. In previous years, CinemaCon attendees were first to see Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick” and Warner Bros. and DC’s “The Flash.”

Screening “How to Train Your Dragon” will help to build buzz for the live-action remake, which lands in multiplexes amid a packed summer season. Also on the calendar over the four hottest months of the year, there’s Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” (May 2), Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” remake and...

How To Train Your Dragon: Dean DeBlois Breaks Down The Trailer
Image
Dean DeBlois knows a thing or two about dragons. And, yes, how to train them. Back in 2015, he directed DreamWorks’ beloved coming-of-age fantasy How To Train Your Dragon alongside Chris Sanders, beginning the tale of friendship between Viking boy Hiccup and his Night Fury dragon pal Toothless – one that DeBlois continued into 2014’s How To Train Your Dragon 2, before concluding in 2018’s How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. So, when Universal mooted a live-action remake of the first film in the saga, they went to the man who knew the story best – and rather than pass it on to another filmmaker, he felt there was more to explore.

“Chris Sanders and I were brought in as a replacement writer and director team on that first film,” DeBlois tells Empire at the release of the How To Train Your Dragon trailer. “We had 15 months to rewrite and push the movie through production.

While there may still be some uncertainty from fans of the franchise about the movie, Gerard Butler has some very positive things to say about the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake. How To Train Your Dragon's Live-Action Trailer Proves The Biggest Fear About DreamWorks' Adaptation Was Right All Along
Image
With many wondering why DreamWorks chose to adapt How to Train Your Dragon into live-action, the studio's teaser trailer confirms a major fear about the upcoming remake. Announced in February 2023, the new movie has been in the works for around two years. The project is recalling writer/director Dean DeBlois, who has been one of the most heavily involved creatives with the Dragons movie franchise to date. Those familiar with the original will probably experience very few surprises when watching the live-action version, begging the question of why a live-action How to Train Your Dragon cast has been assembled.

The animated How to Train Your Dragon movies and TV shows create a sprawling saga of the shifting dynamic between the franchise's Vikings and their scaly adversaries-turned-allies. However, the upcoming remake won't slot into the vast continuity that already exists but instead appears to be starting from scratch. DreamWorks isn't the...

How To Train Your Dragon's Live-Action Toothless Design Eases A Major Concern
Image
The first teaser trailer for the live action adaptation of Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon provided a clear look at the aesthetic of the remake, and the design for the dragon Toothless should ease the concerns of all fans of the multimedia franchise. The original series is among the most successful animated franchises of all time, both from a commercial and a critical perspective. How to Train Your Dragon is slated for a June 2025 release, and given how beloved the trilogy is, there was plenty of trepidation about how the characters and creatures would translate to live action.

Fortunately, the first teaser seems to have assuaged some of the angst about the live action's faithfulness to the original. As How to Train Your Dragon's original director has noted, there was always going to be continuity between the original animated movie and the live action treatment given that Dean DeBlois,...

A Disney / Pixar and Dreamworks Animation key animator who worked for years at the studios has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for sex crimes against young girls. The charges included “complicity in repeated rapes and sexual assaults on minors, human trafficking, and child pornography offenses.”

All his “offenses” were alleged to have occurred between 2012 and 2021 while he lived in France and the United States.

Bolhem Bouchib, 59, was placed on France’s sex offender registry in 2014 after sexually assaulting his partner’s eight-year-old daughter. He was later arrested in 2021 and has remained in prison since his arrest.

Somehow Bouchib continued to work for American animation studios.

Bouchib worked on big hits like “Hercules,” “Lilo and Stitch,” “Ratatouille,” “Up,” and “The Incredibles” before he was added to the sex offender registry. Quick Links Chris Sanders Directed How To Train Your Dragon The Many Similarities Between The Wild Robot and How To Train Your Dragon The Wild Robot Could Reach How To Train Your Dragon's Success Chris Sanders' Career Doesn't End With Two Franchises

In its opening weekend alone, The Wild Robot proved that it is capable of achieving financial and critical success by the end of its run. It thrived at the box office, taking the top spot for the week over Francis Ford Coppola's $120 million Megalopolis. While Megalopolis has proven to be a complete financial disaster at the box office, the DreamWorks Animation hit is still impressive compared to other September animated releases.

The movie showcases the story of a shipwrecked robot desperately trying to survive on an island. It features an all-star cast that includes Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, and Mark Hamill. It was based on Peter Brown's book,...

How To Train Your Dragon Once Quietly Revealed A Dark Alternate Future For Hiccup
Image
There's no denying Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is the franchise's main protagonist, but How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World gives a terrifying glimpse of what could have been had Berk's young chieftain made a different decision at a pivotal moment in the story. Hiccup's kindness and refusal to turn to violence until absolutely necessary is what set the run of How to Train Your Dragon movies and TV shows in motion. However, if these traits had failed him during a key scene from the first movie, the story would have been unrecognizable.

The How to Train Your Dragon franchise is filled with thrilling dragon fights, but the underlying message is that peace is always the desired option. Hiccup is at the heart of Berk's drastic change when it comes to the community's attitude toward dragons. In a particularly compelling moment in the movie trilogy's final installment, the...
