Any action anime series will need some cool and strong villains to threaten the world and challenge the heroes. Weak, forgettable, or generic villains are sure to hold back the narrative somewhat, but truly great villains will make an action anime shine and keep viewers coming back for more. Whether those villains are halfway sympathetic beings or unforgivable monsters, they will be entertaining if they're stylish and strong.

A variety of action anime titles absolutely deliver on that front, and at times, the villains are more interesting than the heroes themselves. The best action anime with the best villains treat viewers to not just excellent fight scenes between good and evil, but also some thoughtful dialogue and ideological views from the villains. It's not enough for the antagonists to be strong — they also need an interesting why with what they do, and they should have strong personal convictions or even vulnerabilities to round things out.

Heroes are an important part of any anime series, but it's the villains that really keep the audience hooked. Villains, in a way, are almost more important to the story than the heroes themselves are, as they're the ones who push the plot forward. Most of the time, they are, indeed, the plot itself. Villains like Mha's Tomura Shigaraki or Naruto's Orochimaru, push the conflict and raise the stakes. Villains, also, have the benefit of being a lot more avant-garde in terms of their presentation than heroes.

However, as is the nature of most stories, the villains eventually need to fall. And those moments should feel earned. They are an obstacle to climb for the heroes and that should be satisfying. As reported by Anime News Network, veteran voice actor Dorothy Elias-Fahn has shared that prolific fellow voice actor Dave Mallow has died. He was 76. Mallow will be well-known to fans of anime and video games of the 1990s and early 2000s. Over the course of a decades-long career, Mallow voiced roles in many well-known series across English dubbed anime, video games and, in particular, was a recurring voice in various iterations of Power Rangers over the years.

Hirohiko Araki didn’t limit the various Joestar Group to just male protagonists. In Part 6 of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, titled Stone Ocean, the JoJo this time was Jolyne Cujoh. She was the first female main protagonist in the entire expansive series and became an icon for it.

Araki, however, wanted to introduce a strong female protagonist well before Stone Ocean. Part 3, titled Stardust Crusaders, depicts Jotaro Kujo’s journey. A young girl named Anne follows his group from Pakistan and is featured in the first part.

The creator of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure wanted Anne to have a much bigger role in the series. He pitched the idea of her gaining a Stand to his editors. They, however, disagreed with them, stating that it wouldn’t appeal to the male Shonen demographic. This, of course, didn’t stop him from making Jolyne.

Remarkably few fights in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime are a one-sided beatdown, aside from Yoshikage Kira butchering Josuke's team before retreating, or Diavolo ambushing Bruno Bucciarati. For the most part, the JoJo's anime keeps the tension at maximum with evenly matched battles, with the Stand-wielding heroes giving it their all each time to narrowly defeat their sinister opponents in the major story arcs.

Best of all, these narrow fights are usually a good mix of brawn and brains, with the Joestar heroes and their many JoBro allies needing all their wits and resourceful thinking to stay in the fight when the enemy has the upper hand. That leads to some of shonen anime's most intense and suspenseful battles, often with a surprise, last-minute move to decide the fight once and for all. These particular clashes in JoJo's stand out as fine examples of how evenly matched the fighters tend to be.

Most story arcs in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventureanime make good use of the Stands that appear, most of all the Stands belonging to heroes like Jotaro Kujo, Josuke, Giorno, Kakyoin, and Bruno Bucciarati. Those Stands showed anime fans the full extent of their powers and uses in many battles and adventures, but not all Stands had the same opportunity to shine. No matter their cool designs and their potential, some Stands were written out too soon.

That is bound to happen when an anime like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure uses most of its antagonists as "monster of the week" villains who show off their Stands in just one battle before getting knocked out of the story. In the case of simpler Stands, such as Tower of Gray, anime fans don't mind if an enemy Stand is used so briefly, but if the enemy Stand is super cool, it deserves more than that.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventureintroduces shonen anime fans to an unforgettable cast of characters in each story arc. As protagonists, Jotaro Kujo and Joseph Joestar are the two main standouts, which makes it easy for fans to gravitate to them. Aside from Jotaro and Joseph, however, there is a full cast of incredible characters in Hirohiko Araki's manga and anime thatshouldn't be ignored in the process.

Jotaro may be the face of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise, and Joseph its funniest protagonist, but the rest of the cast all have memorable moments that make them unforgettable, including the Joestar heroes and their "JoBro" allies in each arc. As anime’s largest and most popular demographic, shonen anime is full of titles spanning over every genre and subgenre imaginable. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco announced on Jan 27, 2025, its plans to launch Art of Manga, the largest comprehensive exhibition of manga art ever held in the Americas, at the de Young Museum.

The showcase, running Sep 27, 2025, to Jan 25, 2026 will display over 700 original drawings by iconic Japanese artists, including One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure author Hirohiko Araki, and Inuyasha artist Rumiko Takahashi.

Organized in collaboration with major publishers Kadokawa, Kodansha, Shueisha, and others, the exhibition aims to position manga as a globally influential art form.

Plenty of shonen anime series go to great lengths to keep their main characters alive, since those characters drive the plot in essential ways. Besides, fans would be outraged if the best, most popular characters got killed off, so these anime series will do anything to shield them from harm, or at least, keep death itself at bay. To ensure protagonists aren't just dropping like flys, shonen anime characters are clad in plot armor, and a little goes a long way.

Plot armor is inevitable in fiction, so the key is to make it subtle and let the main characters survive and succeed with their own smart actions. However, a select handful of shonen characters (like Luffy from One Piece and Bakugo from Mha) rely too much on plot armor, and they're sometimes rather obvious about it.
