The overall show is entertaining, but was let down a bit by the backstory. It didn't seem to really have one at all and what pieces existed were fairly loosely cobbled together. The main character is a fairly typical teenager - knows it all, very headstrong, and makes plenty of mistakes (just like I was when that age if I am honest!). She moves with her family from California to South Africa and lives a rich kid's lifestyle, but has a massive chip on her shoulder and can only think about getting back to the USA.
Our lead does the typical things kids do - builds new relationships with friends, struggles making her mind up on boyfriends., and disobeys hr parents frequently. At some points, it's easy to get annoyed with her. But if I think back to when I was her age - I did pretty much the same.
This is an entertaining show with plenty of kids and adults alike. It doesn't really strive to deal with many of the deeper societal issues with which the story coexists, and I think this is probably a strength in a way.
An easy watch and fun too.

I got so excited as I normally do when I see a South African series or movie pop up. The movie is far from Nollywood, had great acting, normally great casting. But the main character did not fit this particular story, and the story was not well developed on screen. I had to keep watching in hopes of something better but no such thing . Hell bent on getting to Oakland but the realistic portions of it didn't make it on screen. The white friends acting didn't make it any better, the little brother is the only one that made it seem authentic, the running around selling bottles just too much and not enough to make it better.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this new series! I was really into the story, to the point where I was personally angry at certain characters while loving others, and I was literally talking to my tv. I didn't even see the plot twist coming, which I usually do, that's how I know it was a job well done! I don't want to give away any hints about the show but I can't wait to see how things unfold in Season 2!! Awesome job Ms. Imani P and the rest of the cast you all really did y'all's thing. I will be keeping an eye out for what's to come next, but first I'm gonna watch the entire first season again!
I enjoyed this series so much! It was both a thriller, full of action and funny too. Just as afro beats exposes us to different music, Classified shows us Africa is so much more than what it was once believe to be according to the media. The acting was superb. Ella knows it all of course. Afterall, don't all teenagers. As if they could hear me, I found myself talking to the screen. The diversity of the characters are well represented in this series. Most are from famous or well to do families that play a major role in the storyline. My 19 year old grandson watched it with me. We want more! Well written and well acted. We are highly reccomending it to all of our family and friends.
This show is so unrealistic, some of the storylines were so stupid and unbelievable, the rest were the same recycled storylines and characters in most shows that involve a teen- a know it all, high school cliques, the new 'tokens',evil stepmother, boy drama.
It's the same story with a little spy stuff going on.
This show is very predictable and you will see most 'plot twists' coming.
The main character was miscast, she might be 4'11 in real life and all the other actors towered over her,it looked weird on film, next to the other actors she looked much younger than them.
Most of the acting was bad(except the step-mom and son Kwame). A few of the high school kids did well like Darla, and the 'richest kid' with the helicopter.
I'm an adult and I do watch some of these shows that are marketed to young people. I enjoy some of them. I think that people under 20 might like this show more that I did.
I still gave it 4 stars because it wasn't a bad idea,it was just badly executed and had too many outrageous, silly parts.
