Just like in the film, a new musical is directed by Dorien Goertzen and Albert Jan van Rees. For Dorien Goertzen, this is only his first directing work and he previously worked more on film stories, so he also wrote the story of this film. Albert Jan van Rees has more directing experience.
Opposites Annabel (Noortje Herlaar) and Sander (Benja Bruining) cannot stand each other. However, when they both join the school band later, they learn that they both have a passion for music. Sander seems to have feelings for Annabel, but he is not the only one. Olaf (Kay Greidanus) also has a good bond with Annabel and they end up together.
Ten years later, Annabel and Sander meet again when they work together on a dance act. With this they manage to break through successfully, but with their increasing success their collaboration becomes increasingly difficult.
This film starts as a beautiful film about music and people who are passionate about it. The film contains fun, recognizable music and songs from the 80s and 90s. The film's own music is often musically appropriate for these times.
With the exception of the musical music and dance, the story unfortunately chooses to be about a love triangle and the recognizable consequences that often come with it. The film does commit some recognizable clichés, which makes it come across as a standard romantic drama. This standard story is a shame for the cast members, who have provided beautiful and good singing and dancing scenes.
Furthermore, the film is also unlucky with the date it was released. Earlier this week the musical classic Grease was shown. In addition, the film will also be followed by Taylor Swift's music tour The Eras Tour. Other films such as The Exorcist: Believer have already been released earlier and earlier, to avoid Taylor Swift's tour. For example, a different release date could have helped this film somewhat, thus avoiding musical competition.
