Nearly 70 years ago, monster movies changed forever with the introduction of Godzilla. The Japanese prehistoric monster awoke from its slumber in 1954 to terrorize villagers from Odo Island, announcing its presence with loud, lumbering footsteps and a bone-chilling roar. Since the original "Godzilla," kaiju movies have become a subgenre all their own, populated by epic monsters like Mothra and Ghidorah, with regular installments that range from corny to incredible.
In recent years, Hollywood has gotten in on the Godzilla game with Legendary Pictures' own spin on the world of giant monsters. But as exciting as it is to watch Kyle Chandler, Brian Tyree Henry, and Millie Bobby Brown face off against Godzilla, Japanese studio Toho (home to the vast majority of Godzilla flicks ever made) has something even more thrilling up its sleeve: a movie that looks poised to recapture the post-war terror of the beloved original. Viewers are accustomed to interpreting the "hero figure" as someone with a perfect moral compass. In any version of media, a male hero figure is righteous, belongs to the good side, and does everything in his power to protect society. That's what the audience has been fed since the dawn of entertainment, and the trope followed into anime as well. Shows featuring an overly celebrated protagonist that is usually too good to be true are fan favorites, but they couldn't be farther from reality.
Fortunately, anime shows have surprisingly taken a 360-turn in addressing long-standing main hero tropes that aren't appreciated anymore. With recent hits like My Home Hero, The Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting, and more, it's evident that the viewers appreciate male protagonists who have imperfections and resonate with the audience on a personal level. It's about time anime creators aim for stories featuring a hero who is not...

Most of the anime in the Spring 2023 lineup have by now reached their midway point. While some shows like Oshi no Ko and Hell's Paradise have already found their audience and are basking in glory, others are failing to live up to their expectations for various reasons. However, one particular show is not getting the recognition it deserves: the intriguing new thriller titled My Home Hero.
With tens of shows airing each season and many receiving well-funded marketing strategies, it is not surprising that certain shows get buried. However, popularity isn't always a good measure of quality; sometimes it's just a matter of shows finding their respective niches. So while it's not necessarily the best anime there is, My Home Hero deserves a lot more attention than it has received thus far.

The Spring 2023 anime season is now reaching the halfway mark for most shows. This has given even the most enthusiastic and forgiving of viewers ample opportunity to make up their minds about which titles to stick with until the end -- and which of them to leave by the wayside in favor of more promising fare.
Since well over 30 new series have started airing, it's no surprise that not all of these have been mega-hits, or that even some of the most mainstream and popular titles simply haven't resonated with certain audiences. Whether it's down to poor pacing, low-quality production values or outright bad content, a few shows just have too many flaws to be able to work well on screen, even if they initially seemed promising on paper.
