A lovely comedy drama about an ultra orthodox society in Bnei Brak, highlighting the struggles of matchmaking in the orthodox jewish society today, which many can relate to. The movie explores the different cultures within the ultra orthodox families- and mainly focuses between two families from different backgrounds trying to find a match for their respective children- who are not always following the desires of their parents wishes regarding their future. Its a movie about the struggles we see in these fringe ultra orthodox societies- highlighting issues of race and discrimination many are facing.
A brilliant, funny, sweet, and cool Israeli movie that speaks about the different cultures in Israeli society. The fascinating Haredi world, legacy and culture is marvellously portrayed in this movie, with humor and respect. The music of the film (composed by Frank Ilfman) is absolutely amazing and the cast (Maor Schwietzer, Amit Rahav, Liana Ayoun, Reymonde Amsellem) is truly brilliant and breathtaking. The direction (Erez Tadmor) is perfect, and the script (Hava Divon, Yaki Reisner, Erez Tadmor) is wonderfully well written. This is a movie that will make you laugh, cry, think, learn, and enjoy. A real gem. Do not miss it. Am Israel chai. 10/10.
"Matchmaking" (2022) provides a truly fascinating and deeply engaging look into the specific world of Orthodox Jewish communities residing in contemporary Israel. The film skillfully delves into the intricate process of traditional matchmaking, offering valuable insight into how partners are sought, vetted, and matched within a society often influenced by distinct classes and sects. It compellingly explores the delicate and often complex balance between adhering to time-honored customs, meeting familial expectations, and the often-surprising emergence of genuine romantic love and individual desire.
The ensemble cast delivers beautiful and genuinely talented performances, bringing authenticity and charm to their respective roles. Their portrayals make the characters' experiences relatable and their emotional journeys resonate powerfully. The narrative expertly weaves together moments of laugh-out-loud humor stemming from cultural nuances and awkward situations, with genuinely heartwarming scenes of connection and understanding. Yet, it doesn't shy away from the bittersweet realities and underlying tensions, adding depth to the story. This blend results in a film that is both joyful and profoundly moving at various points.
